I checked their site and they didn't state that they had a model for my '01 cab.

Didn't get a PPI but it ran smooth, no leaks, no squeaks, but it has a spoiler light on startup and the cruise doesn't work.

IMO the Numeric is the best feeling shifter I've used -- very crisp, positive action.

OK, the preliminary list of maintenance/upgrades is finalized and purchased (except for AOS, emailing PO to see if it was replaced during IMS/RMS/Clutch.)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Picked up a 996 C2 and am absolutely loving it. Being the cheapest 911 MY on the market my expectations were pretty low when I test drove it but it was instant love. I was looking for a MKII C2 but when I saw this one on the local PCA board I jumped on it and landed it for $14,500.
"Arctic Silver over gray leather. 78K miles. LN replacement of IMS with new RMS and clutch done at that time (65k, proactive and all were in good shape). 160F Thermostat. Manual transmission, sunroof, after market LED taillights. 8K miles on Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrical* A/S tires, with a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport UHP tires with 80% of tread to accompany the car. New power steering rack & pump, new front brakes."
I asked about the water pump and he said the dealer pcar tech said it looked fine and had metal blades instead of the plastic ones. Didn't get a PPI but it ran smooth, no leaks, no squeaks, but it has a spoiler light on startup and the cruise doesn't work. Tested every single button, lever and **** and all worked fine. I'm planning on this car being a hobby so as soon as I get a durametric and my garage/tools organized I'll start working on these issues.
My first upgrade will be a 997 SSK as the sloppiness of the 996 shifter drive me nuts. I'll also need to figure out something about the seats as I'm only 5'10" 170 but they seem about 3" too narrow on my upper torso. Does anyone else have this issue?
One thing that has been kinda fun is that the car came without training wheels (PSM). It really forces you to respect her and take into account road surface, conditions, and temperature anytime you drive with a little spirit.
Anyway, it's great to be back on Rennlist and I'm looking forward to getting my "fix" here in the 996. Cheers from OKC.
FYI, that's EXACTLY what you are supposed to get. Nothing wrong with it.
For whatever reason, Porsche decided to give you a spoiler warning light on startup until you start moving forward a bit. Not sure what their reasoning was, but it is what it is.
Beautiful car and great deal, btw!! Nice job.
I have a 1998 ROW C2 coupe and I had the same feeling about the seat. I am same height but 190 and it feels like it kind of pinches you upper back. I though it would bother me but i got used to the feeling after a couple weeks and now I don't even notice it.
Enjoy your car. I sure do!
OK, so here's what I like better about the 996 than the '09 997TT 6MT cab I owned:
- It's about 600 lbs lighter
- Rear wheel drive
- No PASM. The TT was too hard for me in sport+ for Daily Driving and too floaty in standard mode. The DSC probably would have solved this but never got to try it.
- No torque addiction (hopefully). The TT wasn't fast enough stock. So I added an APC tune, Klein decat exhaust, and 100 octane fuel. That sucker would scream (literally). Then after a while, I got used to it and started looking at what mod I needed next to get back the adrenaline rush.
- No turbo to blow, knocking out four O2 sensors and causing spy hunter smoke from the exhaust.
- Instead of focusing on how fast my car can go, I can focus on how good of a driver I can become.
- Though I don't like to admit it, the TT ended up screwing with my ego. It was so flashy that people were always staring and commenting on it. It started to become part of my self concept even though I'm really not that damn cool. (I'm actually more of a computer nerd than anything.)
- It has every quality that made me fall in love with the 911 the first time I drove one at a price that I don't feel guilty owning and my wife doesn't bitch about. Heck, I could drive it for a year and then give it away and still come out better than I did on the TT.
I'm not taking anything away from the Turbos, they truly are "supercars". This one just happens to be a much better fit for me with where I'm at today.
I could be mistaken, but IIRC the "preferred" SSK is the one that came stock in the 997. Sort of an "in-between" the 996 shifter and that one with the 35% shorter throw.
Nothing wrong with downsizing, but a 17 year old Porsche is not a smart financial decision when money is tight

The stock 997 shifter is definitely an upgrade over the 996. I put the Porsche SSK in my 997 and thought it was a nice upgrade over stock. May just be preference (or laziness from having to shift so far, ha).
Agreed. One could argue that an air cooled might be because of the appreciation. But you are still going to have repairs and are investing 3-4x the dollar amount for an incremental increase in enjoyment.
When they said buy the best car you can afford, I believed them and tried that. It was a bad idea. It doesn't take into account that you will mostly likely have repairs that are you aren't prepared for. I bought my '09 997tt for a steal at $64k with them fixing all items that came back on the PPI. I sold it a year later for $63k. It would have worked out awesome except for the $5k in upgrades, $12k in repairs and maintenance, and $3k in sales commissions.
So this time I bought the cheapest car I could love and that had proof of most of the known major repairs taken care of. I almost bought an '04 C2 for $19.4k with 85k miles on it. But they had no maintenance records, I was going to have to pay for a PPI, and I figured I would dump another $4K+ doing the IMS/RMS/clutch. Then I would just be out the normal $1,000s in typical repairs though out the year. With the $10,000 I saved, I can now blow the engine and have it repaired without spending two days in the fetal position wondering what I "did to deserve this." Or at least that's my rationalization this time around.
The stock 997 shifter can be found on eBay for not much $$. For a few bucks more, there are a couple kits that replace the plastic bushings with metal ... if I hadn't bought a Numeric Racing shifter, I'd probably have gone this route. IMO the Numeric is the best feeling shifter I've used -- very crisp, positive action.
Congrats! Hope you have many trouble free miles.
Those look like the same seats that were in my 986. I'm about the same size as you and also felt they were a bit narrow on the torso. But they do tend to hold you in during spirited driving and I did get used to them in time. You could look for a set of hardback sport seats. Sometimes track rats swap them out for racing seats. I have the sport seats in my 996 and they are great seats for a street car IMO.
Slakker - Congrats on the purchase and welcome! I had a '99 C4 aero coupe and absolutely loved that car. Although I sold it and bought a 996tt, I have great memories of that '99. 98% of the turbo experience at 40% of the cost. The NA 996s actually sound better than the turbos and you can put your foot into for more than just a couple of seconds without putting yourself at risk of incarceration.
Turbos are great, but the NA 996 is an awesome car - in some ways better than much more expensive and more respected cars. They are the best kept secret in the Porsche kingdom (and maybe all of the automotive world).
Thx Dporto! That's a heck of a deal but I'm going to let SFZ have it. I really miss my SSK. It's bad enough KoP has me contemplating a Numeric when I know the Porsche SSK will more than meet my needs.
+1 for the 997 shifter. Most cost effective upgrade. Interested to see what you find with the cruise control. I have the same issue, and identical car
but thats a coincidence. I'm begining to think all 99's are silver. What production month is yours?
I'll let you know on the cruise.... 3/98 production date. Yours? When I black out the wheels and lower it they will really look a like. Might have to avoid the same public gatherings.
Found the LN IMS Retrofit serial number sticker on the door as well. That's kind of cool.
I am interested in the cruise control also. I have a 1999 c2 with 15000 miles on it and the only thing that does not work is the cruise control. If you press the button the light goes on, but it will not engage.
I had almost talked myself into the BMI SSK after finding it for $300 until I saw the Numeric blims on sale for $600 with free shipping in the parts marketplace. I couldn't resist. Only 2 more left if anyone is interested
Worth the money?
Beats me, but the shift feel is outstanding. The 997 shifter is very good and a lot less expensive, but I haven't tried anything that feels quite like the Numeric.
Before you mess with shifters, though, replace your engine mounts. You'd be amazed what a difference it'll make, even if you just get a new set of OEM mounts. I have a cab and got the Torque Solutions semi-solid mounts, but ended up swapping them out as I thought they were too harsh. I'm sure a semi-solid mount would be fine in a coupe.
In the few years I've had the car it's been mostly preventative maintenance, plus some convenience and longevity-related stuff:
-- LN deep sump kit and stainless baffle
-- LN spin-on filter adapter and magnetic drain plug
-- Center radiator (helps on the highway, no difference around town)
-- Zunsport radiator grilles
-- T96 steering wheel (smaller and thicker)
-- Aftermarket xenon headlights (upgrade over stock halogens)
-- Aftermarket LED taillights
-- Kenwood double DIN nav system
-- Gentex auto dim mirror w/homelink
Not installed yet:
-- Fabspeed mufflers and tips
-- Numeric Racing shift cables
Considering:
-- SmartTOP for one-touch top operation
-- ExtendMySeat extended driver's seat brackets
Also, my car came with 17" wheels which I replaced with 18" Porsche Sport Designs and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
FWIW, you might want to consider some type of radiator screen once you've cleaned out your radiators. I got the Zunsport grilles because I didn't like the look of the DIY gutter-guard solution, but you can't beat the price of the DIY job. Customcargrills.com sells some nice mesh if you want to go a step up from the Home Depot stuff.
The auto-dim mirror may seem silly, but IMO it's a great upgrade. I got it because I wanted Homelink (garage door opener), plus it's a little bigger than the stock mirror and (of course) adds auto dim and a compass. The wiring is dead simple (12v switched, 12v constant, and ground) and you can get everything you need on eBay. This is the best adapter I've come across to hand a wedge mount mirror on the Porsche button:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121689633282
The mirror is a Gentex 453. I can't remember what mine came out of (a Hyundai, maybe?), but I found one with an amber compass to match the rest of the car's lighting.

That sounds like a good addition. I checked their site and they didn't state that they had a model for my '01 cab. Your customization is smart. I will chase them down for a fit.
For a cab, you need to run the wiring up from the phone connector in the center console. For a coupe, you can get everything you need from the dome light and sunroof switch.
I have a cab, so I made up a little wiring harness out of three-conductor 18-gauge wire. I ran it from the center console under the dash, up the A-pillar, and across the top of the windshield.
If you do a search you can find a few posts on this mod ... they were useful to me when I did mine.
I have a couple pics of my install someplace. I'll post them if I can find them.
The List Part 1
OK, the preliminary list of maintenance/upgrades is finalized and purchased (except for AOS, emailing PO to see if it was replaced during IMS/RMS/Clutch.)
1. Durametric Pro
2. Oil filter adapter kit and DT40 oil
3. Numeric SSK
4. Porsche Water pump (composite blades)
5. AOS
6. Rennline Tunable Engine Mounts
I'm think I'm going to hold off on suspension for awhile. Is there anything else I should be considering?
Lol, this question is a very slippery slope with varied answers.
Welcome and glad you're getting to experience a rwd non-psm mk1 car which is the lightest and closest feeling to an air cooled without all the headaches.
Thanks! I've been amazed by how fun it is. I wish I could say I planned it all along but I just totally lucked into it being the best deal on a well maintained 996C2.
#7. magnetic oil drain plug
#8. new t-stat
#9. new coolant tank cap (if you still have the old version). is current tank still good?
#10. new serp belt
Thx for the reply!
#7 Sorry for the vagueness, the adapter kit includes the filter and mag drain plug.
#8 according to PO, it has a 160 thermostat within the last two years. How often should this be replaced?
#9 how can I tell on cap?
#10 Serp looks practically new.
Thx again.
Overheated on way home today. Luckily was near enough to my driveway to put it neutral and coast it in. Wish I had turned it off immediately but I let it idle for about 5-10 seconds while coasting and then shut it off in the driveway. Here's a picture of towing it up to the garage. Let the "experience" begin!!!
For the t-stat: my indy believes in changing it with the pump.
For the cap: check if yours has a part # ending in
4
(latest version) and will most likely be BLUE. Pic below snagged from the net:
when you say "overheated"...did your temps climb to the "red" zone? or red icon in the dash display? if the latter, low coolant can "trigger" the icon. best of luck.
