Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Waiting for Intermix to identify a c/head problem is --cough- not a great idea.
Leading evidence: 'cough- not a great idea' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cough- not a great idea' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace few months back' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

No smell, no leak, after all I just had the water pump replaced a few months back.

Also, please tell me you used distilled water and not tap water.

This is starting to worry me, I will now bring my car to my mechanic Monday so he can do some more test's.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
A couple of weeks ago the low coolant light came on in my 2003 C4S. I didn't think too much at the time, called my mechanic and he said to add water to the max line and keep an eye on it. It continued to go down, after just a couple days... I stopped by to see my mechanic the other day, he took a look around and prescribed a new coolant cap (the one I had was an aftermarket from prev. owner) and a gallon of Porsche coolant. No smell, no leak, after all I just had the water pump replaced a few months back. My oil looks fine too no milkshake...
I filled it up with coolant this morning and put on the new cap, went to work and was good, came home and low again... This is starting to worry me, I will now bring my car to my mechanic Monday so he can do some more test's. I don't want to jump to conclusions yet but shoot what could it be?! I am sorta starting to worry it could be a serious issue. Any ideas? Seems like alotta cracked head talk around lately
You will get intermix if it's a cracked head, which affects mainly Mk I engines anyway.
You need to get your cooling system pressure tested to track down the leak. Sometimes coolant can leak slowly, drop on the exhaust and burn off...disappearing without a trace.
Thanks Ahsai. Yeah its got to be escaping out somewhere. The pressure test is next. Where could it be leaking out of? Could the coolant tank need to be replaced?
Most likely micro cracks at the bottom of the tank (can feel by hand or use an inspection mirror). Pressurize the tank to 18PSI and wait at least 20min. Sometimes it takes time for the leak to show itself
If it's the original tank, it's way overdue.
My car did this about a year ago, a few weeks in a row, then it slowed to a crawl and then completely. I thought the cap fixed it.
Then my head developed a crack.. So I am wondering if the coolant dips were an early sign. Not enough to contaminate the oil, but enough to get the bin down to the low mark..
I don't really know, hope you get it sorted out quickly and inexpensively!
Based on my related experience be careful about the quality of both the replacement tank and cap. Lots of problems with defects -particularly the non-OEM parts.Suggest you buy from a reputable source and discuss their defect replacement policy.
Waiting for Intermix to identify a c/head problem is --cough- not a great idea. There are some excellent ,detailed write-ups here of pressure testing the cooling system. I suggest doing the test (all 30+minutes of it)with a cold engine and then hot. Be prepared for a hefty diagnostics(time) charge.
There are some excellent M96 mechanics in the Costa Mesa area. Ask here to learn if you are using a good one??
Best of luck to you !
Could be the oil cooler. Mine had a very slight leak that was only detected by seeing a coolant stain on the engine when the transmission was pull for IMS replacement.
Too many possibilities to accurately diagnose, and many have offered opinions already.
Did you open the coolant bleeder valve after you topped up the tank with H20 and subsequently coolant?
Also, please tell me you used distilled water and not tap water.
Thanks for all the info everyone. So I have been going to Robert at Auto Strasse Corp in Costa Mesa. I really like him and trust him, not sure if anyone knows any info on him but he is very fair and straight.
If I end up replacing the tank I will only go OEM, I hate cheap aftermarket alternatives...
