Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I think the steam was a red herring as whilst checking today I found the pressure cap not sitting right and this was after being re fitted yesterday when I looked in at the fluid.
Leading evidence: 'Install yesterday' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install yesterday' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Thanks my guess was also CR or WP as well as it ran for a while and only started to kettle when it was fully warmed up.. I will report back when I have fixed it
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

A/ Yes picture shows the area I used (as the renn list instruction ) but I'm guessing I have caught something wrong.

I use the rear crossmember (just in front of the engine) to jack up the rear of the car.

Or what damage could i have done (& so need to repair)?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I wanted (& still want ) to take all wheels off and read the rennlist guide posted to get all four corners in the air which suggests after getting stands under the front points and then using the very back of the engine after the sump you can lift the two rear wheels to get jack stands under the rear load points.
I got as far as stage two but as I gently started to lift the weight some fluid (green and smelly so guess it antifreeze) came out from directly above the exhaust tips both sides. I lowered it back and it stopped.
I have not been losing water as far as I can tell, the header tank still has fluid in, the car has had a smell about it since I brought it a year ago. But in that time I have done some long drives 200 + miles and it has not overheated or lost fluid.
Have a damaged something jacking it this way or any ideas what could be happening. Or what damage could i have done (& so need to repair)?
Thanks O_Sr
Hydraulic fluid from your motor mounts. Time for new motor mounts. I know it is debatable but I never use the "jack the engine" technique. Way too much to go wrong.

update - just been for a run out about 10 miles and have a definite water leak now (engine steaming at rear) so I have to of either lifted it wrong, upset something further that was already leaking or just been unlucky I guess.
Either way I will have to trace and fix

I usually just drive my 996 over a plank of wood of a 2x6 to get it a few inches higher so the jack can reach a good jacking point. I'd never never never use the engine as a jacking point.
I've never had to lift the front yet-but Its a bridge I will have to cross soon as I do my front brakes. I took a peek underneath and could not find anywhere good to lift from . All I see is plastic trays everywhere.
Was still thinking that it might be hydraulic fluid from your motor mounts and not a coolant leak. If the coolant hasn't dropped, then it might be something else.
Yes I would agree with this but wanted all 4 wheels off for a refurbishment and was looking to do the rear brakes at the same time. I cannot easily identify good jacking points it all looks fragile under there, hence took the besta dvice I could find..
I will let it cool down over night and try and look at it tomorrow in daylight from cold and see if I can id the area of loss. I will see if the RT has water in it.
It looks to be high up like the bottle. I cannot see why lifting the engine would cause this to go. How much hydraulic fluid are we talking about is there a reservoir or are these things self contained?

I bet the "steaming" was the hydraulic fluid burning off of the exhaust system not coolant.
Get a couple of new engine mounts and replace your old ones. Pretty straight forward job.
As long as you have popped the old mounts you can jack by that lug without further damaging them.
As for the smell you were experiencing before it is 996 perfume, tire dust burning on the hot mufflers that are directly behind the tires.
I am going to go with engine mounts after inspection today but how (where) do you lift and support the back of the car to get it on stands if you don't want to strain the engine mounts. I need to get stands under the back. Its frustrating catch 22 if I use the ice hockey puck points I cannot then get stands under at the same points. Everything else looks fragile and expensive and not suitable for trolly jack lifting or stands?
Can anyone advise what they do and that works Thanks (sadly no lift )
I look at these are these not just fittings for the sides?
I saw the other link yesterday for a long side bar which I can see 'might' work, I am getting the impression the only way to lift the 996 off all fours is via a four arm hoist.
Makes things difficult
I use the rear crossmember (just in front of the engine) to jack up the rear of the car. I've got a two ton low profile aluminum jack ($150 @ harbor freight) and go straight in from the rear center of the car. Once the car is on jack stands on the rear points, when you jack from one of the front points, both sides will lift. Place Jack stand on opposite side from Jack. Remove Jack and replace with fourth jack stand... Viola'!
Use the rear jack point on each side and put a stand under the front jack point. once yo have the front up do the rear using the rear suspension mount, it will lift both sides and then put stands under the rear jack points
Either jack point will raise the entire side
Do not raise the car using the pan or engine
DBJOE996 wins the prize for first correct answer it seems (Before the road test mind you!), the engine mounts are shot, so I picked up two from Porsche UK today as I found them to be cheapest and 1 mile from home which makes for ease of collection. However during removal I managed to snap the long bolt on the old one as the 18mm nut was corroded in place and would not shift even with a little heat and lube. So cannot finish as I had better pick up two new 99908421501 hexagon nut M 12 X 1,5
I think the steam was a red herring as whilst checking today I found the pressure cap not sitting right and this was after being re fitted yesterday when I looked in at the fluid.
I called in at the garage today and they showed me a couple of lifting points I can use to get the wheels off once all this is done!

At the risk of self promotion - there's a better explanation of how they work here

.
We ship to the UK pretty regularly. That said - find a jacking/ jack stand method you're comfortable with that's safe for you and car.
