I got all the new stuff in the car, and even though I got rid of the initial code, it still didn't run great, the timing was still off, I proceeded to check the cam chain tensioners and found my issue.

I also had to have the tensioner pads replaced while they were on there.

On the wing side, I'd like to do a swan neck for our 996s and also use some techniques I have used on my work with 962s to reduce drag a tiny bit.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I met the guy, turns out he is a really cool guy, I drove the car, it was not running fine but everything was there, clean interior, 6-speed manual, clean title, ice cold a/c, it just needed love, so I ended up striking a deal and trading my clean '98 986 for a fairly nice '99 911.

I plan to restore this car and use some of my motorsports engineering experience to design/make parts for this project as I have done with others in the past, but first I'll go through the engine and restore/replace some of the rougher looking parts to have a strong base to start with.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone,
Recently I got my first 911 fulfilling a childhood dream and in a very unexpected way. I am starting this thread to document the process of bringing my 911 back to its former glory and beyond. But before I'd like to share with you the story of how I got here. I am a Mechanical Engineer, currently working as a Design Engineer, I work with Mercedes/AMG products on a daily basis and even though I do love my AMGs my heart is with Porsches. I am an immigrant, I came to the US for school and with absolutely nothing, a few years into school, I landed my first real job as a Design Engineer in this company that builds continuation Porsche RSRS, 934s, 935s and 962s, I designed and reverse engineered all kinds of things for those cars and many other extremely rare Porsches and racecars, I truly enjoyed working on them, because of it my love for them grew.
I wanted one of my own but sadly I couldn't afford it then. I finished school not that long ago and at the first chance I had I got myself a 986 Boxster, fantastic little car, I have had 20+ cars and that one is definitely top 5 for me. Recently I put my 986 up for sale and I was considering a 987 or a BMW Z4 something else to try and enjoy, while I saved up for a 911. Considering the current situation I considered pulling my car off the market since there really wasn't that much interest, but this very interesting character with a very interesting car collection offered me a trade, normally people offer bad cars but this guy gave me options that went from a Porsche 928 to a 69 Cadillac Coupe De Ville, among those there was one that caught my eye; A '99 C2 996, I knew I had to get it. So I am now the proud owner of a 911.
I plan to restore this car and use some of my motorsports engineering experience to design/make parts for this project as I have done with others in the past, but first I'll go through the engine and restore/replace some of the rougher looking parts to have a strong base to start with.
I am very excited, to say the least.
Here are some pictures on its current state...after a good cleaning
Awesome! I look forward to your progress! My 996 project is on hold due to current world issues, but I should get my front bumper cover once things recover.
Wow, you sure cleaned it up real nice. Congrats! My car had both solenoids fail within 6 months of each other. I also had to have the tensioner pads replaced while they were on there. It wasnt cheap, as I didnt do the work myself.
Did you drop the engine? My plan is to do the IMS bearing, Oil separator, Rear main seal, Tensioners, Solenoids, and Clutch all at once. Also, thank you very much!
I replaced the IMS (with LN Retro), RMS, AOS and clutch all on jack stands without dropping the engine. I'm glad I bought a cheap transmission jack that is now my adjustable shop stool. Like you, I bought a 2001 C2 cab that needed love . . . and filters, fluids, brakes, tires, motor mounts, cleaning & polishing. All part of the fun.
I had a similar experience. I restored and upgraded components on my 99 996 C2 and now I have a great drivers car that offers an amazing experience. Here's my thread on the restoration.

Awesome thread! loved the work you did. I am from Panama, I feel the 996 would be great for Panama City as well, one day I'll ship mine down there. Thank you very much for sharing!
Update. My issue seems to be the Camshaft Position Sensor on Bank 1, The previous code for the Solenoid was erased and hasn't come back, I took the car to my personal Mechanic and the inspection corroborated my findings, so I decided to go ahead and just order everything I needed for the car.
So I ordered an Oil Change, Camshaft Position Sensor, Water Pump Kit, Air Oil Separator. Rear Main Seal, IMS bearing kit, Serpentine Belt, Head Plugs, and a Clutch Kitt.
After I get this all sorted out, I will be doing brakes all around.
So far so good!
Sadly those are beyond salvation, the first owner put a paint matched cover on the headlights, so they would look round, it covered the turn signals! and because of that, the 2nd owner removed the paint and well they now look like that.
I already got an immaculate set of headlights ready to go in as soon as I end up doing all the work I am currently doing. Headlights for sure make a big difference, it did on my Boxster.
Very cool story on your background and the obtaining your first 911! I look forward to following this thread. And kudos on picking up a 996, regardless of all the bad people love to spout about them, they are wonderful cars and better than any 911 that preceded them.
For sure, most of my early work revolved around Porsches 935s ans 962s
For the 962 I designed a front axle lifter system, rear wing and wing mounts (15% more efficient that original), fuel baffle tanks, oil tank, intake manifold, steering rack, updated suspension and a lot more stuff to made this beauty an usable roadcar.
I also reverse engineered and then updated the 935/84 chassis from original Porsche factory 1:1 drawings.
Also did some work for this Footworks-Porsche F1 car. Mainly airbox and exhaust. I believe this is one of 2 engines in existence the other one being in the Porsche museum. This one runs.
I've also worked on the development of a billet air-cooled engine, sadly I can't share a picture of that project but I assure you it is awesome and will offer fantastic performance for the money.
I also did stuff for other F1 cars, Older Ferraris and Alfas.
These days I work mostly with AMG road cars but do much of the same stuff; high performance engine parts, aerodynamics, suspension, braking systems.
I'm glad I have to type this because my jaw is stuck on the floor. Suffice it to say if you decide to develop parts and organize group-buys I'll PM you my contact info.
I have a couple of things planned, a shifter, an exhaust tip, and a low profile wing for a 996 Cup decklid that I got recently. Later down the road, I'd like to get into performance parts, maybe an intake, maybe an oil pan, canards, a plenum?. I have a lot in mind. My plan since I got the 996 was to do parts for it, the same I did with a Miata I used to have, I sold a couple of units of the parts I did for that car, that included stuff like hood extractors, reverse gauges (Aston Martin like), CNC pedals, thermostat relocator. This time I am thinking it would be neat to set up an online shop and sell parts for the fellow enthusiast, getting the parts made for a reasonable price shouldn't be an issue.
Anyway, here are a shifter and a tip I designed, as a proof of concept, just to get the idea out of my mind haha.
This is idea 1, as you can see it is clearly inspired in older air-cooled tips, this style can also be seen in the new "935"
Same goes for idea 2, the same but with a twist
This is a basic idea for a shifter, I have a ton more hand drawings of other ideas hahaha
Anyway, I'll keep sharing my ideas and if there is enough interest in any specific parts, I can make it happen!
Update:
I got all the new stuff in the car, and even though I got rid of the initial code, it still didn't run great, the timing was still off, I proceeded to check the cam chain tensioners and found my issue. So I today I dropped the ball and got them all, as well as a couple of o rings and seals that were quite old. This should solve my issue once and for all. I must say my engine should be bulletproof after this.
Like the first tips with fins only on the inside.
Interested in all your parts because of the motorsports design inspiration.
Have been looking for a GT3 RS style wing for the 4S.....if you make it I will buy it
Raises hand to be a guinea pig for any parts you need tested
As long as you're OK with them being USED...
I need aero and more weight reduction.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with and following along.
Thank you for the feedback. Well,
I actually got myself a 996 cup decklid this weekend, I plan on trying different wing configurations, including a GT3 RS style wing setup even maybe a swan neck, we'll see. I have CFD software so I'll be using that to see what's best. I'll update my progress on this thread.
For sure! I am all about function, since I have seen some interest in here I am putting together a list of things I can design and get made for the platform. Obviously somebody willing to try the parts is fantastic, I'll start working on aero stuff as soon as I get the car together then I'll see what can be done in terms of weight reduction.
Fantastic
Where are you located?
Also, for now this is what I've got in terms of product ideas
 Rear Wing
 Wing Mounts
 Titanium Lug Bolts
 Canards
 Muffler Delete
 Shifter
 Plenum?
 Brake Cooling?
 Intake?
Any suggestions are welcome, since you guys have been using this platform longer than me.
Great list and can’t wait to see the progress. For me, I am looking for a CF (tasteful) duck tail. If you see one or want to make one (😀
, please let me know!
Also anywhere you can see potential for weight reduction (from your experience in racing), please make mention of it🙏
I would be interested in adjustable mounts to convert the stock wing to a fixed wing like the Sine Qua Non Singer Porsche in the Petrolicious video. I am not sure if it would look as good, but maybe the mount would place the wing a little further back and at a steeper angle.
Big - CF front splitter / diffuser, GT wing, Rear diffuser, CF doors, CF slick top roof skin, Titanium cat and muffler delete.
That's my unlimited build, buy wish list. The wing is probably pretty well sorted with a Cup setup - not sure about the rest of the stuff though. I'm not sure you can buy the front splitter like I have in my head.
Like this:
I'd definitely like to do a proper front splitter, I will work on that. On the wing side, I'd like to do a swan neck for our 996s and also use some techniques I have used on my work with 962s to reduce drag a tiny bit. I am also working on a lower profile wing for the guy or gal that doesn't want the attention of a huge wing currently doing cfd on that one since I want to put in my own 996 😁
Well most things are in.
IMS bearing, thermostat, clutch, rear main seal, cam position sensor, water pump, oil filter. Soon I'll be replacing all tensioners and putting everything back together. I have also replaced pretty much every seal and bolt I've encountered along the way. I'll leave the mufflers off since I am going to make my own mufflers delete, to hopefully sell then in the future!
Getting closer!
Update:
I got her back last friday and she is running like a dream. I changed the headlights and oh boy did it make a difference. I also removed the mufflers in order to install bypass pipes.
Anyway, I am going to be doing brakes pretty soon. Also I am looking to sell my wheels and tires as they are too big for my taste, they are 997 wheels with 295 tires on the back and 235 front.
Pretty soon I'll put the new decklid on and start prototyping wing mounts and profiles. After I get the cats I'll start working on a muffler bypass and when I get rid of my current wheels I'll work on spacers and titanium lug bolts.
Pretty excited to say the least!
It's been a bit since I last posted.
Here are some updates. I recently installed the gt3 cup decklid. I also did a muffler delete and got some bypass pipes, new O2 sensors, new rotors, pads, pad wear sensors and hardware.
Finally, I got my wheels painted black and my calipers yellow. Pretty happy with how everything has turned out so far.
