That will have you chasing your tail trying to identify the cause as you'd only turn to the flanges after having changed pads and disks multiple times.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 1999 996 with 17 inch stock wheels, unmodified suspension. It currently has 205/40/17 A/S tires in the front, and 255/40/17 A/S tires in the rear. Going by what I'm reading online, these have a wheel offset of 55mm (I just learned today what a 'wheel offset' is, to give an idea of how novice I am ). I'm looking to get a set of winter wheels and tires. I live in Toronto where it usually gets a fair amount of snow. It seems like the recommendation is to go down to 225 in the rear for better traction. 225 also seems to provide far more tire options, which is nice. I don't care for looks as much as function, so I'll probably just get some steel wheels + winter tires this time around. Would the following work without the need for any adjustment besides swapping the wheels? Fronts - 17x7" 52mm offset steel wheels + Michelin X-ICE 205/50/17 Rears - 17x8" 55mm offset steel wheels + Michelin X-ICE 225/45/17 The 17x7" wheels are also available in 50mm, 45mm, 44mm, and 40mm offsets. My understanding is that the lower offset means the tires would sit further away from the car (wider stance). Is it just a cosmetic choice, or is there an ideal offset to pick? Or any other wheel/tire combinations you'd suggest instead of the above? Thanks in advance! Some pictures for attention

POST 2Original post

Research this it’s been discussed numerous times tirerack will give you exact fitment in wheels and tires driving a 996 in the snow with snow tires is hell of a lot of FUN

POST 3Original post

I would urge you stick to the tire dimensions as given by Porsche. They have tested the car on those tyres sizes during winter time in Finland and/or Sweden and maybe even in Canada too. The rear on a 911 is heavy, obviously and I doubt that the load (not speed, mind) rating of a 225/45R17 will be sufficient. Putting steel wheels on the weight-optimized hubs is asking for trouble wrt brake shimmy as the steel wheels contact the brake bell with only 4 little spots per wheel bolt whereas the alloy wheels have a flat surface around each bolt. The hub area of the alloy wheel works as a stiff support that a more flexible stamped steel wheel cannot offer. The locally (arond the wheel bolts) high stresses can lead to a wavy brake disk around its circumference (unvisible to the eye) which in turn could lead to brake shimmy either with the steel wheels or later on when reverting back to alloy wheels. That will have you chasing your tail trying to identify the cause as you'd only turn to the flanges after having changed pads and disks multiple times. I'd get another set of 17" 996 base wheels. They are cheap as chips as nobody wants them. You'll probably read anecdotal evidence here or elsewhere along the lines of 'never experienced that' etc. but one can't make this **** up even if one tried... So I hope this helps you in your choice of winter wheels & tyres.

Follow @hardtailer advice and don't put steel wheels on your Porsche. https://willtheyfit.com/ is a good resource. I used the original 17" Carrera 2 'twist' wheels that came with my car for winters. They are +55 offset front and rear. I use 15mm spacers on the rear, simulating +40 offset, and 7mm specs on the front, for +48 offset. The spacers are strictly for cosmetics, what the kids call 'stance'. I have the spacers from when my summer wheels were these twists. My new summer wheels are custom, and don't need spacers... For tires I've mounted 205/50R17 VREDESTEIN WINTRAC PRO (front) 245/45R17 VREDESTEIN WINTRAC PRO (rear). I purchased from tirerack. They were heavily discounted as the date codes are 2020 and the tire is 'discontinued' at tirerack. They feel amazingly sticky to the touch, but I've never driven on them. I'm sure they will be awesome tho. The fronts are OEM spec, but the rears are slightly taller sidewall profile than OEM recommends, giving me about 1.2 cm more ride height, which will help in snow. They're also 10mm narrower as recommend by Porsche. Your 225s might work but they're skinny. Yes, narrower is better in the rain and snow, to a point, but 30mm is a big step down in width. Make sure you winterize your car! I've got the woolwax kit, with sprayers, hoses, plugs and whatnot for my compressor, and this month I'll do my own winterizing, panels and wheel well liners off, all the suspension fittings etc will get sprayed. I don't trust anyone else local to do it. I called around and no one I spoke to gave me any confidence that they knew or cared about the car ...Hope this helps. I've never driven my 911 in snow, but if my experience with a Fiat 850 Spider and 1303 Super Beetle are indicators, it will be a treat and importantly very safe.

Thanks for your reply! I've never even considered those things about steel wheels before, so it was definitely helpful. I've decided to take your advice and avoid them altogether. I'll be swapping winters onto my current 17s, and maybe consider getting dedicated 18s for the next summer. Thanks for the tips on winterizing the car, I'll definitely look into those. I decided to stick with my current 17s (17x7 and 17x9) and swap snow tires onto them. Leaning towards putting on 245/45R17 on the rears as well. Any thoughts on putting 215/50R17s on the front instead of the OEM spec 205/50R17s? Reason being that the 205/50R17 has a sidewall height of 102.5mm, vs the 245/45R17 with a sidewall height of 110.25mm. 215/50R17 would have a sidewall height of 107.5mm which would be a bit closer to the rear 110.25mm. Thought maybe this might be a bit more "balanced" setup, and the 215 would fit fine on the 7" wide rims as well. Though maybe one could argue going wider than OEM spec isn't a good idea for snow.. Thanks all!
