I have used Durametric to datalog the engine, clear engine codes, clear ABS codes, clear airbag codes, clear tiptronic codes, and it does all that nicely.
Leading evidence: 'Use durametric' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'driver's door latch microswitch is causing this' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend foxwell or durametric' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

( I use Mac so I had to buy a windows computer) Then later I got a icarsoft.

Suspected cause
Suspect the driver's door latch microswitch is causing this, but would love to have a reader that could assist diagnosis.

I have the ABS light going off, which I'm assuming is either the drivers or passenger buckle, which I plan to first diagnose with the reader, then buy the new buckle and wiring repair kit for whichever side the fault is reading from, and then clear the code to get rid of the light.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Rather than pay for return shipping, he ordered me a replacement from Amazon that had the preinstalled software, and that worked perfectly right out of the box.
Ive searched this 100 times but Im getting conflicting information.
I need to clear ABS lights and search faults for the horn beeping after locking with the key.
Car is an 01 996 non-turbo. Do I have to buy the $300 durametric, or can I get away with the cheaper icarsoft?
I was not able to clear the abs with the iCarsoft on my '99 C2 (the unit works otherwise flawlessly on my 987 CS and presumably 997 models). I instead purchased a Foxwell unit which did both diagnosis of the ABS and alarm system on my 996.
I have both. Had the Durametric first. Have to get out my laptop. ( I use Mac so I had to buy a windows computer) Then later I got a icarsoft. I use the icarsoft 99% of the time. I keep the Durametric for a time when I "might" need it. I have heard that the Foxwell is better does more. But I have not run into this situation yet. U se the icarsoft on my Macan S and my 996
The foxwell was able to clear faults as well?
Why not as good? Will it clear codes? Does your durametric clear codes? Assuming you have a 996 non turbo?
You have a 996 non turbo? Will the icarsoft that you use clear codes? If you use the icarsoft 99% of the time, why might you need a durametric? What does the durametric do that your icarsoft cant?
I keep the Durametric because I had it first. The icarsoft cleared any codes I needed it to. Since I have heard that it "might" not I kept the Durametric just in case. I used the Duramtric I guess just to use it. Yes I have a 2003 996 cab non turbo. I had a 2005 Turbo cab also but sold it.
thanks. This is helpful information because that is a deal breaker for me. I have the ABS light going off, which I'm assuming is either the drivers or passenger buckle, which I plan to first diagnose with the reader, then buy the new buckle and wiring repair kit for whichever side the fault is reading from, and then clear the code to get rid of the light.
Plus I have the alarm beeping after locking indicating another fault from the DME which I'd like to diagnose with the reader and fix.
I have no problem spending $300 on the durametric if that's what's needed to tackle both of those issues. However if I can save $125 with a more budget product then I'd rather take that route.
Does anyone know if the Foxwell unit reads cam deviation? I think I read somewhere that the NT530 unit does that. When you buy one of these foxwell units, do they send you a link to download the right software on them, or do you have to buy the unit with the software to your car preloaded? There's a million different options on Amazon, and the reviews for their customer service is terrible. I'm starting to think the durametric is the way to go.
The only knock on the Durametric I have is, well, a couple things:
1) It can't read any data from the Tiptronic TCU, it can only reset codes. This is likely not a problem to many people.
2) It cannot read the steering angle sensor and sometimes cannot calibrate the steering angle sensor.
3) It does not handle engine datalogging very well.
4) As far as I can tell it cannot read status of any of the alarm switches.
I have used Durametric to datalog the engine, clear engine codes, clear ABS codes, clear airbag codes, clear tiptronic codes, and it does all that nicely.
I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that the iCarSoft can read data from the Tiptronic, I have not validated this.
I have not used the Foxwell product.
Foxwell 530 does read cam deviations, and I've used mine to clear seat buckle codes. Some units are available with software preinstalled. Without the preinstalled Porsche software, you'll need a windows laptop. Follow the included instructions. Had to go thru the install process on my first one. Then shipped that one off to my dad. Rather than pay for return shipping, he ordered me a replacement from Amazon that had the preinstalled software, and that worked perfectly right out of the box.
Great information. thank you
Does Foxwell give you unlimited free downloads to all of their software for different car brands? So if you buy a "blank" unit you can just plug in with a windows computer, open their software and download the software you need for your car? I'm assuming the device can be formatted and new software downloaded for a different car?
I have a cheap ($50) OBDII reader that reads codes. I leave that in my door panel for a quick read anywhere. I have used that on the Porsche, Mini Cooper and several other cars. I also have Durametric and it is everything it is said to be. I also bought a Foxwell 530 off Amazon for my Mini Cooper (wife's car). It came pre-loaded with Mini Cooper software, and I have to say I really like it. Not only does it show you what error codes exist, you can plug it in your laptop/computer and upload your session and get even more information about any error codes. It will also clear error codes for almost every module in the car. It works great. I believe you can add your Porsche to the Foxwell by just visiting their website and purchasing/downloading the specific software. And yes, multiple makes and models are supported.
got it. thanks. Just ordered the 530 unit with preloaded porsche software from their website.
thanks for your feedback.
thank you to all on rennlist that helped with this.
I have Durametric for Porsche and it is terrifc. I Need scanning tool for mlnl cooper. Our metric has Bavarian Technic for Mini. Would you recommend Foxwell or Durametric for Mini? Thanks
Agree. But the laptop requirement and user interface seem pretty outdated and clunky for present day levels of tech. A Bluetooth tablet version would be beyond awesome. Volvo uses VIDA for maintenance, and is very much like PIWIS. I leave the Foxwell in the 996, for just in case recovery events, because of the portability. I can use that same Foxwell on my Volvo. The Durametric is still my go-to for garage health checks and repairs. And I have the VIDA on the same laptop for garage work on the XC90.
I highly recommend having both. They each pay for themselves as soon as you plug in to your car, in your garage, on your clock the second time.
I have a '99 manual and a few years ago a buddy of mine purchased a Durametric Professional and offered it to me. I used it for a couple of weeks and found that, at least on my model, it would only read the DME and nothing else. So I passed. Now I have a few issues in the door and window area and I'm looking for a reader that can access all of the control modules.
Since the Durametric won't read them , what else would you recommend?
TIA.
No reader will tell you that the window regulator is going bad. Describe your door and window problem. More than likely you need to get a new regulator. Common issue with these cars
I should have been more clear; window regulator is fine, but I'm having a problem with the door/window microswitches. Window drops, but goes right back up when handle is released and interior lights don't always go off. Suspect the driver's door latch microswitch is causing this, but would love to have a reader that could assist diagnosis.
Maybe none of them have this capability.
