Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I use a small run manufacturer in Texas to create the horseshoe trim for 996 shifter boot (check my other post linked above) using HP’s MJF (multi jet fusion) technology, parts are printed in nylon which makes the parts suitable for end use/heat/chemical resistance etc.

I managed to fill every button blank in the car with something.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

While I was getting ready to get bigger run of prototypes so I can send to you guys for test, baby decided to show up ahead of schedule, so as many of you can expect everything else got deprioritized.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After finalizing my last project which was replacement trim for shifter boot (post here -

) and custom gauge cluster couple years earlier (post here -

I started tackling another item that was bugging me for a long time. Its the window switch/ashtray cubby. With cost savings during the development of 996/986 Porsche tried to reuse same parts for all cars, so now us with coupes and 986s are left with rear window switch blanks taking up space where little phone storage would be very appreciated.
Im still in prototyping phase, but here is what its shaping up to be.
With so many organic shapes in 996 its quite hard reverse engineering perfectly fitting accessory, but Im getting there still few hiccups to solve.
After prototyping is done I will make sure to offer short beta batch for members of this forum if anyone is interested.
Super pertinent and well thought out with respect to factory forms. I am a buyer for one, even an old proto without the switch holes would work (windows switches moved to dash).
I like it. Not to complicate anything, but will there be anything for those of us with Cabs and 4 window switches? I take it this will be 3D printed? Will this be paintable to match the interior? I may be interested in two units.
SoCal is right, you can buy that directly. It didnt make sense to go through effort to just slightly make it better looking. Functionality is #1 at the same time improving the look of center console.
It will be 3d printed but not in commonly available FDM or SLA technology. 3d prints can be easily distinguished and will require much more prep to finish. I use a small run manufacturer in Texas to create the horseshoe trim for 996 shifter boot (check my other post linked above) using HP’s MJF (multi jet fusion) technology, parts are printed in nylon which makes the parts suitable for end use/heat/chemical resistance etc. and texture resembles typical plastic texture in cars.
kropka - Looks really good. Better lines than the original. Count me in. I’ll paint mine in Seal Grey to evaluate adhesion and durability. Cool idea! I also think USB spot at rear would be nice, but not required.
Just a quick update. Finally its a perfect fit, sending it for sample print to make sure its within tolerances to fit properly once its printed for end use.
I have added small separator between window switches, my wife being a passenger always accidentally opens/closes drivers window, maybe this will help finding correct switch...
Kropka, I'd love one if/when they're available. Recessing the switches will hopefully get them
just
far enough out of the way that my dog won't hit them by accident. Or maybe he's doing it on purpose
I would like to be on the list for a black one too! I
have the Porsche ashtray delete pictured above with two "blank" switches. Would be nice to have a little larger storage with no blanks. I like the idea of relocating the heater switches (with the different orientation), How hard was it to relocate them? Did you just add some wire from the current location in the center?
It really isn't anything difficult. If your lucky, you may have enough slack in the harness to reroute the wires to the new location. If not, then you will need to extend the wires by adding more length. Easy stuff.
Thanks for messaging, I do owe everyone an update. The project is complete, I do have a prototype manufactured with final material PA12. Below I'm attaching detailed pictures. As this is just a hobby for me it never gets big chunks of time. While I was getting ready to get bigger run of prototypes so I can send to you guys for test, baby decided to show up ahead of schedule, so as many of you can expect everything else got deprioritized. I will get back on it. I'm in talks with manufacturing company (today) about finishes/smoothness, colors etc. I'll keep you posted with any updates.
Great, thanks for the update! Congrats on the new arrival. Hang in there, it gets easier around 2 years when they can talk to you! And ask to go for a ride in the Porsche.
