Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2003, 996 Recently removed my hard top. Tried to raise my soft top. - Rear clam shell goes up- Front windows go down - No movement from rear windows- Motor sound coming from the rear, stops and restarts - No soft top movement at all Where to start trouble shooting? - Relay ?

POST 2Original post

Can you raise and lower the rear windows with the switches?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No. Neither rear window will move.

POST 4Original post

Does the front hook disengage? I know the limit switch in the front hook "recepticle" is connected to the operation of the rear windows.

POST 5Original post

The rear windows won't move if the roof is down, so that's not an indication of what's broken. Does anything move other than the rear cover? The side flaps? if it starts and stops, perhaps it's a limit switch. Any evidence of a hydraulic leak? There's the microswitch on the latching hook and another on the roof top-lock (at the windscreen) There's a potentiometer at the lower end near the wheel well ("Convertible-top Interrogation") There's the control unit in the center at that back where all the relays are. There's the microswitch for the compartment lid lock and a potentiometer for "lid interrogation" There are microswitches each side for the flaps (for both up and down.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, side flaps fold over. No indication of hydraulic leak. Sound coming from rear deck, motor or hydraulic trying to go, but nothing. If I open the rear, fold window and remove carpet, how or what diagnosis should I perform to alleviate each possible problem?

POST 7Original post

I think you have to troubleshoot the rear windows not going down with the switches first. That alone would prevent the top from functioning.

The title says the rear windows won't go up, and the response was that they wouldn't move. My assumption was they were down and OP tried the button to see if they would work. This is a key point, isn't it? I n what position are the rear windows now? If the rear windows were rolled down to remove the hardtop, they won't go back up while there is no roof. If the roof was removed while the rear windows were up and they are stuck in the up position, that indeed is the starting point for troubleshooting.

Good point, he doesn't say if the rear windows are currently down or up. If they are down he can try pushing in the switch where the hook latches to the front. Hold that switch in, which looks like a bare wire, while pressing the window switches, My initial assumption was that the windows were up. If they were already down, I don't think the top opening process would try to raise and then lower them. Not sure, though. Another thing to try is to put the hardtop back on and see if the windows operate normally.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pre-conditions: 1. Hard Top is on the vehicle, all windows are up Process Flow - Hard Top Removal: 1. Open DSF and PSF doors 2. Unlatch hard top from top of window frame 3. Unlatch hardtop in rear of vehicle using hard top unlatch tool 4. Lift hard top off. Don't scratch rear deck lid! Note: All windows are currently UP Process Flow - Soft Top Close 1. Press button to close soft top 2. Rear clam shell lifts and pushes back 3. Side flaps fold over 4. Rear and front windows begin to drop - completely lowering (This is automatically controlled via the normal process of closing the top) 5. Actual soft top does not move at all. Note: Once this process flow is complete - the rear windows and front windows are now lowered. Process Flow - Soft Top Open 1. Press button to open soft top (Note: top is already opened due to above top not able to close), but wanting to close the flaps and clam shell 2. DSF and PSF windows go up, DSR and PSR do not move. 3. Soft top - nada (no movement) Process Flow - Reattached Hard Top 1. Replaced hard top. 2. All windows work. Latest Theory: Hydraulic cylinders need to be rebuilt. :-( Any feedback on how hard this job is to accomplish, DIY?

POST 11Original post

Are you sure the side flaps fully folded? If they don't fold all the way, that could prevent the top from moving. Just an idea.

POST 12Original post

Can you manually help the top move up when you get to this point in the sequence? Earlier this year, my top started taking some time before it started moving when it got to that step. I found that I was able to push the top up or down to help it. Then, I opened the back area and found the fluid level was low.(indicating some type of leak) After filling it, it started moving immediately when it got to that step in the process. I assume it was taking time for the pump to build up pressure to move the top. Regardless, in the later part of this video, You Tube , Yogi goes through where the pump is and some of the hardware. In the follow up video he has the components out of the car. Good luck!

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Turns out, hydraulic cylinders were leaking. Had both rebuilt, all works well.
