Suggestion

I used minimum force when putting the socket on to minimize how far the socket would dig into the bolt.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

First is a bolt extractor set and the second is a college guess at a 7-spline off the shelf security key that didn't work.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went to the dealership and all master keys are 6 point keys. This is a 7 spline lug and they said because of that it won't work.... One of the master keys I personally put on by hand definitely fit, but they won't give it a shot because they're worried they'll strip their key out. I tried making the argument that even though it's a 7 spline lug, if you get 6 of the points on, because the splines are female, it wouldn't matter because the key would still have grip on 6 of the splines. Anyways, I gave that a verbal shot but they wouldn't budge. Thinking of trying a different dealership. Their master tech also gave me my car back with the hood popped and had I not noticed it, would've had a potential hood in my face. I really just don't trust anyone anymore man. Anyways, this is a 7 spline lug. Porsche master sets are all 6 points, from what I'm told. I looked around online and have found a few 7 point kits, but nothing that looks as jacked up as this. I mean this one has different grooves if you look really closely. If all else fails, thinking of driving to a VW dealership - apparently the VW keys are 7 point and Porsche was owned by VW in the late 90's. Edit: sorry yes, my leather tool kit was stolen and it had the key in there. Humbling reminder to lock my car.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just bought these - I think the 23/20mm 7 spline key in this kit is it... Amazon Amazon I quickly learned that these are 100% not Porsche lugs because if you look at the depth of the Porsche keys, they match the depth of the notches on their respective lugs. A Porsche security lug will never be splined the length of the bolt like this one is. They rest on the top like this (all 30 of the master keys match this depth too):

POST 4Original post

I would say to trash all those security lugs......but someone did just steal your tool kit, so?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah man.... hence the thread and edit - just wanted to get other eyes on it to see if anyone recognizes it. It's an off the shelf bolt, I'm 99% sure. Bought a key kit on amazon that I think has the right 7-point key.

If its not exact smash it on the lug with a big hammer. Trash the locks and buy a new set with key

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 18423473

^^^ this. Get rid of the locks. Only creates aggravation for you. Does not create a deterrent for thieves. I was able to remove my locking lugs in less than a minute each using the big hammer method. If I did this 3 or 4 times it would take me seconds. A few whacks on a socket dig the splines into the bolt. Turns off easily.

POST 8Original post

Your explanation only gives the scum of the earth ideas lol

POST 9Original post

Many come off with the "fits any bolt" sockets.... OR buy some smaller dorman lug nuts and have someone mig/tig weld them on the end of the locking bolt.. OR cheap harbor freight socket and a hammer if you have room around the bolt, OR Drill the head off the bolt.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 18423507

Were/are you able to get the bolt out of the socket? I did this and one of the sockets I used has a bolt stuck in it.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 18423739

A good vice and a punch will release the bolt but it can take some effort.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 18423739

Put the bolt back in and smack the socket side to side, or put the bolt in a vice and do the same, or vice and a punch through the socket to push the bolt out.

POST 13Original post

Luckily I'm not the only scum of the earth. I got the method from others here on Rennlist. Yes, The bolts came out easily. I held the socket on the ground and bumped the threads and they came out. I used minimum force when putting the socket on to minimize how far the socket would dig into the bolt. With each hammer I would test how well it was attached and guessed when it would be strong enough to turn. This pic shows how small the dig-in can be. May be socket quality dependent

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Would agree with you guys but the smashing of the socket on the bolt only works with true 6 point lugs because of what I posted above (look at the depth of the splines versus what I have) mine have splines that go the length of the both, and it has a rounded top - nothing to really hammer on there. Praying this key I bought works or else will prob trash x4 21mm sockets with an insane amount of PC7 coated on the inside and let it sit overnight / try it in the morning. Drilling would be a pain because of the material.

POST 15Original post

There are wheel lock removal tools, basically a tapered socket that grips the head, I've used mine a couple times. There are also nut/bolt removers that should work, they're typically used for rounded off fasteners. They have tapered twist flutes like an EZ out, but female to grab the outside surface.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Still struggling with this - so far have tried these two products: Amazon Amazon Amazon Amazon First is a bolt extractor set and the second is a college guess at a 7-spline off the shelf security key that didn't work. The issue with my lugs here is the rounded top... Thinking my next step is to go to a VW dealer and see if they have a 7-spline that fits. Again these are not Porsche security lugs. They're either aftermarket or VW, since I was told VW has been known for 7-spline security lugs (this was a guy at the dealer (and VW owned Porsche at the time)). Hoping someone can chime in, thanks!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got it with a different sized turbo socket with the same flanges as the Amazon product above - those curved points that dig in. What an annoyance this was lol - replaced with four stock lugs.
