Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There is a Simple Green product that i use called "Simple Green Extreme" it's safe on alum and alloys and is actually an aircraft cleaner - it even has the Boeing spec # on it - works awesome, just spray on, hit it with a tooth brush or soft toilet brush, and lightly hose off
Leading evidence: 'Use called "simple green extreme" it's safe' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
I would probably not spend the coin for dry ice blasting but I like a relatively clean engine.

Having a clean engine, top and bottom, has huge benefits!

Suggestion
I rarely use solvents from the top of the engine and spot clean using approved degreasers for aluminum.

Suggestion
I do use a pressure washer but shield certain components and use a blower to remove excess water from pooling in places.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Whats the members viewpoint on keeping the engine and engine bay clean and detailed? Purely cosmetic or actually any benefits to it? Assuming one uses only soft brushes, rags and engine non-solvent based degreasing products (ie no hosing it down).
Specifically for the M96, what would you cover up with plastic other than the Alternator and Throttlebody?
I'd avoid excessive water moisture around the coil packs specifically, but add any plug for the harness onto that list. I'd avoid solvents or chemicals on any of the rubber hoses or fittings - probably ditto for the wiring harness plugs & coils.

My go-to cleaner is LA's Totally Awesome. I have no idea what's in it but it doesn't seem to harm aluminum or other alloys.
It works great on wheels too.

You spray that on, let it soak, then use and old toothbrush or something?
Having a clean engine, top and bottom, has huge benefits! Yes, it looks visually appealing and shows you take car of the car but more than anything it will expose any issues you might have going on. If your engine is caked in dirt from years of use you might have a hard time tracking down any leaks or other issues. I absolutely hate working on dirty cars and clean everything I can while doing a job. When I installed my UAOS, every single part I took out was given a clean. Some needed a bit and some more but putting it all together was very gratifying.
Modern cars are very resistant to water intrusion and most if not all plugs should be water tight. I'd definitely cover the alternator if you're going to spray things down with water. I really like using CarPro Perl diluted 50/50 on all plastics.
Don't use Simple Green, or Purple Power. It will eat the alloy. Although I did directly spray Purple Power on my dead short block diligently for more than a month. I didn't notice any impact.
That said I don't want to take a chance.
The best way I got my engine clean was to buy a new short block and have the heads redone. I've never had a cleaner engine!
Actually, Simple Green is fine because it doesn't contain Sodium Hydroxide the active ingredient in many of the spray degreasers. I would still be careful with it.

Farrah it is! I still have a Farrah Fawcett pillow someone gave me when as a 15 year old I had a bad dirt bike accident. Why I still have it all these years, who knows! Hey, before we descend into the gutter, the pillow is stored away in a closet somewhere (but I do know where!).
