Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In 1st and 2nd gear when I get off or on the throttle the car jerks, even if I do it very gently, I don't think Porsche designed it that way so if it's not the mounts it's probably the DMF in which case we are going to do the entire clutch and get it over with.
Leading evidence: 'dmf in' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'dmf in' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check of this out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Most likely the dual mass flywheel making the clunk.

When cold, when I press the clutch pedal I can hear a very faint grind/whoosh noise from behind, when I get my foot of the clutch the noise stops, also when warm there is no noise, that is most likely the pressure plate bearing.

The most frustrating thing is I have to wait for ages to get a time with a shop and check all of this out.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone and thank you for having me. I just got my hands on a 1998 996 Carrera and couldn't be more happier, my first beautiful Porsche!
Now, the car was a part of an inheritance and the seller had absolutely no idea what the service history was, car has done 190.000 kilometers. In general, the car looks like brand new inside and out, it's very obvious someone has taken great care of it, at least in that department. It's obvious paint is coated (probably ceramic), engine oil looks like brand new, there are new engine mounts etc.
I'm not a mechanic, I've never driven one of these before so I have no idea how some of the car elements should behave, I've booked a time with a specialist but that is in 2 weeks, so I would be very grateful if someone can give some advice on the following before I drive it to the shop.
It seems the clutch is pretty much gone. When cold, when I press the clutch pedal I can hear a very faint grind/whoosh noise from behind, when I get my foot of the clutch the noise stops, also when warm there is no noise, that is most likely the pressure plate bearing. Next, the clutch pedal is fairly hard, which is usually a sign of a dying pressure plate (can't be sure because I never driven one of these before though), and it starts grabbing a bit high, I would say somewhere half way up, or maybe a bit more.
The main problem I have is that in 1st gear, when I start moving, just as the car starts moving I hear a clank/thump from behind, this only happens when the car starts moving in 1st gear, never again. Also sometimes, again in 1st gear when the car juuuuust starts moving I hear a distinct grind from the gearbox/engine (much louder than the pressure plate bearing) and it just lasts for a second, feels like it does that when the clutch starts to engage.
Could this be the clutch, not looking forward to rebuild the transmission? I'm not sure if my car has DMF but it could be that the entire clutch including DMF are on their way out?
Grinding noise could be from the clutch arm/fork coming from its pivot point.
I believe there was an updated part available.
996 has a DMF as standard.
Can't say anything to the other noises.
Most likely the dual mass flywheel making the clunk. Tge stuff pedal may be the assist spring for the pedal. Lots of threads on that subject. Maybe someone can post a link or u can search.
Thank you very much guys. Fingers crossed it's the mounts. In 1st and 2nd gear when I get off or on the throttle the car jerks, even if I do it very gently, I don't think Porsche designed it that way so if it's not the mounts it's probably the DMF in which case we are going to do the entire clutch and get it over with.
After a lot of internet detective work I managed to find the shop that maintained my car, going to give them a call tomorrow and possibly schedule a visit soon to get familiar with the service history. The most frustrating thing is I have to wait for ages to get a time with a shop and check all of this out.
