My intuition tells me that if I buy it, the first thing I should do is get the IMS and RMS replaced before driving it for an extended period of time. They are also flexible on price.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been looking to purchase this 2001 996 convertible here in Southern California. I've test driven it twice already and the car seems to be in great condition; clutch is solid, interior is immaculate. The dealer has a strong reputation with selling luxury vehicles, but I don't know who the previous owner is and the Carfax has a pretty abysmal service history. The shop did a pretty solid PPI and service on it with a reputable euro shop in the area (pictures attached). I am just very thrown off by the lack of service history e.g. knowing how often oil was changed, and how often it was driven. My intuition tells me that if I buy it, the first thing I should do is get the IMS and RMS replaced before driving it for an extended period of time. They are also flexible on price. I was curious what the community here thinks on a vehicle with this kind of history? Is this a good purchase? Best, Elmir

POST 2Original post

The only thing additional u can do is have the cylindes bores inspected to identify any bore scoring. If u like the car and the prices is right then buy it. With no detals like milage or price we cant help much more. Fyi, car fax service history on my cars would be blank. I do it all myself so it doesnt mean the car was neglected, just means the po was thrifty....maybe???

^^^This. I'd get the bores scoped to see what's in there before i bought it.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I agree that a bore scope would be ideal before buying, but it's pretty intrusive / costly. I don't think the dealer would be willing to do such an intrusive inspection as part of a PPI. I could ask, though. Thank you so much for the advice!

POST 5Original post

Remove the oil sump and take a picture and post it.... it is the "window into the soul of the engine" ... And yes, while the sump is off, run a camera up into the bottom of the cylinders and take more pictures....

And when it develops a leak that wasn't there before...who pays for that?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 18459662

Won't matter because if it passes the tests it will be in the hands if the new owner. If it doesn't pass, it will still be in the hands of the current owner who should thank the prospective buyer for finding out that the car had problems.

The employer of the mechanic who obviously wasn't able to put the sump plate back properly...

POST 9Original post

I guess I'll be the contrarian here. The car has 44k with no apparent leaks or condition problems. It's just had its 40K mile service plus some and a thorough inspection with no overrevs. (1) The likelihood of needing an IMSB at this point is pretty low, I would do it in the foreseeable future but not as a panic job. Put a couple of thousand miles on the car, change the oil, inspect the filter, and have an oil analysis done. That will give you a wealth of info. (2) As to bore scoring, my understanding is that it occurs most frequently in cold climates and with improper warming of the engine. The idea to pull the sump and scope that is not a bad idea. Offer to pay for it at your expense if needed. Sounds like a good prospect. Good luck.

POST 10Original post

That's a damn fine looking automobile there. Good luck!
