FYI - I've used PETG in the past for parts in the interior with good results.

This is only the 3rd time we are using the 3dD printer, and have only used PLA up to this point (which worked great).

It's incredibly durable material that I use for production quality bike mounts for my company.

Suggestion
We are using the default ABS temp of 240 on the Creality and it starts out printing okay but then the whole thing lifts off the bed not too long into the print.

It is fun, I have had a lot of use of mine, but the quality of the prints are not the same as a Stereo Lithographic printer, this can to some degree be circumvented with a spray filler, sanding and paint, depends on what quality and looks you want.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For the 3D printing folks I just uploaded a design on thingiverse
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3892625
It is a lid for the sun visor mirrors in the 996 and I guess the Boxster.
If you can print you dont have to buy the whole assembly for 90 bux.
The original cad file is there for those that want to tweak it
Yes I am printing right now, hopefully the last prototype, getting the hinges to play with the leaf springs and light switch took a few iterations but last one worked nicely. I added some Porsche swag to it but that can easily be removed.
Works well, some sanding and painting and they are good to go. Never mind the porsche lettering, on the file they are not through the part, just embossed 1mm

is an Anet A8
think I paid 120 bucks, 2 porsche mirror holdets are 180usd
I have printed a lot of parts for my porsches so it has more than paid for itself
Just something to consider....I had a friend 3D print a custom bracket for my dash cam in one of my cars allowing the Dashcam to look nice and custom. However, when it was sunny and hot, the bracket melted and distorted. Make sure the material doe not soften at high temp.
We got my some one of these recently, and what he tells me is that the inexpensive PLA material has trouble with heat. They sell other materials that my hold up better in those conditions. I think he said ABS is one of the ones that holds up better in heat.
Very cool, nice work!
FYI - I've used PETG in the past for parts in the interior with good results. PLA does have a lower glass transition temperature and car interiors get crazy hot in the summer. I believe ABS is the best, but unless you have an enclosure warping will be an issue (especially with a large flat part such as this). I've also done just a little bit of experimenting with annealing PLA in the oven. It makes the part much stronger but causes some dimensional distortion and I'm not sure what impact it has on holding up to heat.
Right so dont use PLA , I have printed this in ABS, works well in hot cars, PLA is o nono it will melt
the porsche script did not come out that well and I moved the holes 0.3mm for better fit, I will update the file
for best results use some coats of spray filler and sand off any structure from the tape that you might be printing on, then paint it. i have just painted it in the picture below but the fitting is excellent.
the line across it under the porsche letters is from the tape so that should be gone if you tape better than I did or use the spray filler
when I print it I use some abs-juice to get better adherence and less warping
Thanks, Yes it took 5-6 iterations to get it to open and close like a mercedes benz door but now it is just the surface finish and texture form the tape that any DIYs has to fix themselves.
I was looking on ebay for a used complete visor or mirror assembly but the mirrors are always broken, was also thinking about tweaking the lids so that I can have the porsche logo there or Porsche scripted in red, first Porsche script did not turn out that well, I think I have to print the letters and put it on there, that could work, in contrasting color.
There is also the possibility of having things printed in stainless steel, for those that are interested, on demand, it is more pricey but not crazy, I printed gears, 10 of them, for 1000 bucks, work related so I figured that I could probably print porsche swag or parts in steel if needed without completely ruining myself. Another Porsche enthusiast is looking at roof racks for the 944 and 928, unobtainable today, but he borrowed them and scanned them into the computer so that he can print them, pretty cool what technology can do these days.
Anet A8, cheap chinese crap printer but I figured I could spend the 120 bucks to learn the technology.
Newer printers are better and for double the price you get a noticeable improvement in quality.
If you glue a small magnet to the edge of the mirror and a metal washer on the back of the original mirror cover, it will keep the cover closed. A lot simpler solution than replacing the whole thing.
I am glad you like them but I am not in the printing business, however there are those that are, not sure what they would charge, print on demand businesses

came up when I googled it
Thank you for sharing the file. I just had one snap the other day.
I did zero finishing, just quick printed one in draft quality and gave it a test fit. Awesome!
I use an Anet A8, cheapest you can find, print in ABS
Ebay has one for 115usd
or you order one online using the downloadable file on thingiverse. I think there is a link there to order it printed, but I dont know the price for that service.
took me 4 hours to print one with 0.1mm resolution
If you want something that will look almost OEM with hardly any refinishing. Try using 3dhubs.com and select SLS or MJF Nylon in black. It's incredibly durable material that I use for production quality bike mounts for my company. Might be more expensive than buying new though!
EDIT: Actually wow, super cheap! About $34 it's quoting.
You can see the difference in quality here:

I'm probably going to order one myself just to see how it looks. I also looked at the Solidworks file, great modeling!
As 3d printing becomes more mainstream we should have a dedicated section where we can share & post our our files for replacement components for our cars . I just picked up a 3d printer last night and I have been brushing up on my AutoCad skills ... Can wait to start pounding out some stuff ...
There have been multiple links where you can purchase it, I just showed how much it is to purchase through 3dhubs for a non-FDM type of print which is much better quality..... I mean.... I could have 20 of them printed and offer them to you for 3x markup if that's what you want?
"SDOMEBODY" out of "goodness" going to offer making some of these...I personally do not have any interest in 3D printing, but I would be willing to pay a fair price for a nice pair.
I would use a professional printing company, and for 34usd, as was the indicated price, it is almost no sense for me to print them myself.....
I am also looking at steel prints, not for this visor but for a porsche crest

Reviving this. I am in need of some custom speaker bases and have a design on paper but need them printed (which I no nothing about). Any of you do printing for hire so to speak?
Hi,
I can design for hire, since you have it on paper, you need to make a 3D model, there are several software available for that if you want to do it yourself. Printing is best done by the dedicated businesses doing printing, imaterialise above is one of them. There you can find much better prints than what I am able to do with my 100 dollar printer. But there are several printing businesses around.
Hope that helps
It is fun, I have had a lot of use of mine, but the quality of the prints are not the same as a Stereo Lithographic printer, this can to some degree be circumvented with a spray filler, sanding and paint, depends on what quality and looks you want. Wrapping would be another option.
Then there is the modelling part, can be a bit of learning needed there, but there are plenty of tutorials online that are great.
This isn't specific to the visor, but there is a new filament on the market for automotive use. It doesn't warp from heat and is resistant to automotive chemicals. Supposedly it's as easy to print with as PLA. I have no experience with it but it looks interesting. It's more expensive than PLA but not crazy.

Interesting, the ABS is quite resistance but warps easily when printing it and needs a little bit of extra care to stick to the build plate.
Solid work in the video, impressive
Can anyone recommend what what filament and bed temps to use when printing this with ABS? Our printer is a Creality CR-6 SE and the recommended temp of the ABS we are using is 230-270. We are using the default ABS temp of 240 on the Creality and it starts out printing okay but then the whole thing lifts off the bed not too long into the print. This is only the 3rd time we are using the 3dD printer, and have only used PLA up to this point (which worked great).
ABS is notoriously difficult to print due to warping, and there are many articles out there to help. I use ABS-juice, and print on blue painters tape. ABS juice is acetone that you dissolve ABS plastic in (like poorly printed visors chopped up) and then use that to paint the tape before printing creating better adhesion.
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
