Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Leading evidence: 'Use gimp so be kind :-d' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use gimp so be kind :-d' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
So I have decided to make custom gauges for the 996's. Inspired by CSR EVO (RPM Technik) and GT3, also being proud that I own a Carrera, I decided for a small model name and metallic grey akin to the GT3. With two main differences;
"Carrera" - keep it stock-like
"GT3" inspired - consolidate the individual RPM segments into one. keep it simple and minimal.
Thoughts? Also do you know what company could make such a dial?
thanks!

The difference is too subtle for me to care too much one way or the other aesthetically.
Functionally, I would never in a million years put in a tack dial that indicates a higher rev limit than the factory intended unless your own engine was specifically built for it.
For that reason, of the two choices, hands down, stock is better
If you made the GT3 version have the red band at 7000 instead of 7200, then it becomes an aesthetic choice, and maybe the GT3 without the tick marks is cooler.
I like more the stock red zone style
I was thinking on doing something similar for my car (just the center dial) in dark blue and with the "Carrera 4S" inscription similar to the ones seen in the 993
I think car bone can do them, but Im also interested in exploring other manufacturers if anyone knows alternatives.
Thanks!
Took me a while to see it also. The difference between the two is only in the redline section of the tach. The "GT3 style" shows just a red band starting at 7200 with no "tick" marks to indicate 200 rpm increment. The OP's "Carrera style" has redline staring at 7000 with tick marks for 200rpm increments to 8000.
That's the difference between the OP's photos, but the GT3 tachs I've seen simply have redline beginning at 8000 (instead of 7000) with tick marks for 200 increments going up past 9000. In other words, it looks like the Carrara style tach, except for where redline starts and max rpm on the gauge.
hi there, my understanding is that fuel cut off is at 7200ish, hence why I kept it at 7200RPM :-) I mean the OEM spec is "red" at the first "tick" hence 7200 RPM
hi there, thanks for the clarification. The 997 GT3 has a full red segment to indicate redline. IIRC its 8400, until there only tick marks. After red bar. Hence Given the redline of the 996 is 7200
I guess it could be interpreted either way, but the fuel cutoff at 7200 is more of a "save your a**" safety net, so setting red at 7000 seems more correct and safer in practice.
That makes sense, I see the solid band on the 997 GT3 tach. I do think that adding that tiny variation of a solid band on your Carrera, where it exists on the 997 GT3 (kind of sanctioning it as being "in line" with what the factory sees as appropriate), is kind of a cool and subtle mod that very few (other than you) will ever notice. Sometimes those "I only know about this" subtle mods are the coolest.
Functionally, it seems to me that using the red band (without tick marks) significantly reduces precision in the exact operating range where you want the
most
precision, so it seems like a functional step backwards. Since the first bit of red is all that matters for most street cars, that loss of precision above 7K is probably meaningless in practice. I am very surprised the factory removed precision there on the GT3, where the RPM limits are much more likely to be explored much more often.
.
If you do end up making these, you might find a market for them if you make them in black. The aftermarket covers other colors (red, silver, yellow, white, etc) but they do not carry black (at least not that I could find). Porsche doesn't sell dial in black either as they are part of the cluster. When I wanted black dial faces, I had to buy an entire instrument cluster and then peel off the black and transfer it. It was a major pain, but the only choice.
Thanks allot, you have made me far more confident about the selection. I wanted a minimal look as I am going for a retro CSR EVO inspired look with pepita fabric etc. And I did not mean to increase the rev limiter, it is the same as with the tick mark version as the first red tick happens at 7200RPM. Where could I get them made?
Vect,
I don't pay much attention to my gauge cluster so I looked at it yesterday evening. IMHO, no need to add the word "Carrera" on the face. Nice touch, may be important to some, and I am all for it for those that want it, but not important to me.
Same can be said with messing around with the RPM ticks. I may glance broadly at the gauge but never really focus on it. My shifting is mainly done by sound on the track and street. The best rpm gauge imho is an aftermarket exhaust that you can hear over everyone else's car. What ends up happening is that you get to know your cars sounds, each track, gears, RPMs, etc.
I am still wrestling with where to put an oil temp gauge to easily glance at it. Like that you are working on an oil temp gauge. Wish that Porsche would have put one in their cluster.
