Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Repair isn't all' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair isn't all' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My mechanic is advising that I have a leak in the air oil separator and that it be replaced, which apparently is a very expensive repair. My car is a 1999 996 cabriolet with 40K miles on it; I'm the original owner. The car runs great and I have no smoke coming out of the exhaust. As you can surmise, it's not driven that often. I took it in because the convertible top stopped working and told him to go over the car since it's not serviced that often; the check engine light was on and he found a problem with the vacuum reservoir which has been fixed.
Any recommendations on what I should do? My inclination is to just wait for something else to go wrong and which requires getting that deep into the engine, then do them both at once.
I would not wait - the consequences are too dangerous.
Please replace it with the UAOS, it's upgraded and you won't ever have to replace it again. Search this forum for "UAOS", it's about $400 if I remember correctly.
A failed air/oil separator can (worst case) cause catastrophic engine failure.

Thanks, I'm definitely not getting a quote that looks like 2-3 hours of labor and a cheap part.
I have another guy that I normally take the car to who's super-experienced but he wasn't available for the convertible top repair as he's on his own and backed up with work. I'll look up UAOS on the forum and then get him involved.
