We ran without issue until 6am, when the power steering pressure hose ruptured.
Leading evidence: 'Run without issue until 6am' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '50mph speed delta' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Reset reference lap so i could' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I missed the #110 BMW by a couple of feet maximum and slid by that car 99% out of control with probably a 50mph speed delta.

His new fast lap reset the reference lap so I could use the predicted lap time to understand where he was faster than me.

I expect to run a 2:32 in my afternoon practice session, and I think our race pace is going to be around 2:34 or 2:35, which will have us running about 550 laps.

For this race I want to have a little understeer so I can run the faster corners with less risk and to avoid hammering the rear tires like we did at HPR.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

We have completed two practice sessions so far. I drove the first one.
I have not been to Sebring since 2009 but it came right back to me. It is a very fun and challenging track. This will be the slowest car I have driven here, so I feel like I have a lot of time to think on the straights.
The car is 100% so far. I expect to run a 2:32 in my afternoon practice session, and I think our race pace is going to be around 2:34 or 2:35, which will have us running about 550 laps.
My data from the first session (2:34.6) showed perfect oil pressure so we are not too worried about that. Average RPM was 5825 and I think I will get that up about 100 rpm if I can knock off the two seconds I expect to. The engine's power peak is at 6100 rpm, so we are very close on the gear ratios.
The bumps don't seem too bad so far. I hope to have enough time in the 2nd practice to finish up with the chassis setup. In the first session I had some oversteer. The car was on the tires from the Sunday HPR race which had gotten pretty cooked so the oversteer is not a big surprise. For this race I want to have a little understeer so I can run the faster corners with less risk and to avoid hammering the rear tires like we did at HPR.
The weather here this weekend is very pleasant so I don't expect the tires to have any trouble at all. Our strategy calls for a tire change but I think there is a good chance we can do the whole race on 1 set. We will evaluate that around sunset tomorrow.
Chris
We are most of the way thru night practice. I did not hit my 2:32 target but got solidly into the 2:33's and confirmed 2:34 race pace.
The car feels very solid but the level of violence involved in driving a lap here surprised me. There will be much attrition in this race.
I am reasonably happy with the chassis setup. Balance is now just right and the shocks are probably as good as I am going to to get them. Tomorrow during the race I will be working on learning how to run a good lap time without beating the car up so much.
We found that we cannot run the oil level as high as Chad intended too. The engine is ejecting the oil thru the AOS into the catch can. It seems to have found a stable level and the OP data still looks ok so this is not a big problem.
We will have the livestream up like last time. I will post a link once I get it.
Chris
It looks violent through the video, and I know the video isn't even doing justice to the actual feeling in the car, it's kind of amazing when compared to a "normal" circuit.
Preparation and luck a requirement to stay off the attrition list I'm thinking.
This all seems daunting right now.
It's hard to imagine any car surviving 24 hours of how I was driving last night. I will hopefully feel better about it after the first stint. I hope to find ways to avoid the worst bumps.
The projected stint length is 112 minutes which gives us 13 stints and 12 pit stops. We will be trying to reduce that to 12 stints and 11 stops which should be possible if there are any yellow flag periods or rain.
As always this year, our advantage is long stints and consistency and our disadvantage is that our lap times just are not that fast.
I have been lifting weights pretty hard for two months and that has really helped. I feel very good physically. I live at 7200 feet elevation and being down here at sea level is a huge benefit. It is not hot here so I think each stint will be pretty easy. The cumulative fatigue will eventually take its toll though.
I try to sleep at little between stints but I usually can't quite fall asleep. I don't drink coffee or Coke so I am sensitive to caffeine. I will be taking some Excedrine for a big caffeine hit prior to my last 2 stints.
Chris
I was thinking that the workload with 3 drivers seems like it would be very high and dealing with fatigue to be a very real factor, especially with the nature of Sebring being so demanding.
Feels daunting from where I sit man - I can only imagine being in the racing shoes. That said, from what you and Chad have shared of the preparation, both mechanical and physical and the shared experiences of the people involved - from a layman's outsider view, I'd be happy to bet on you guys.
Watching Chris gettin it at 1230am est.
saw the previous driver spin in the grass a few laps prior to the pit. Its real cool watching it live. Thx guys and good luck.
We ran without issue until 6am, when the power steering pressure hose ruptured. That got fixed because the car is nearly impossible to handle without power steering. Then at 8am the plastic underbody panels starting coming loose and fluttering. Those got removed.
85 minutes to go now.
Chris
Hey you guys finished on the podium in GP2 correct? Give yourselves a big thumbs up great effort I have done many laps at Sebring in 25 years but probably tool mr 5 of those years to get to the 491 laps you did 😀
Congratulations!!
Rich
I don't know what to say about the race. What an incredible experience.
My crash at the end of hour 2 was a big disappointment until I reviewed the livestream video. I got seriously lucky there to avoid a big crash. I missed the #110 BMW by a couple of feet maximum and slid by that car 99% out of control with probably a 50mph speed delta. That could have gone really bad and I am thankful that it did not. This was a reminder for me how serious this sport can be.
I spent the rest of my stints trying to improve my driving and lower our fastest lap time. I found that the car could only approach the previous best lap when the fuel was low so I spent the first 3/4 of the stint learning what to do when the time came. During the night Chad set a very fast lap and I spent the stint after that trying to understand how he did that. His new fast lap reset the reference lap so I could use the predicted lap time to understand where he was faster than me. He had pulled off a miracle in Turn 7 and somehow gained .5 sec there alone. I never came close to matching him in Turn 7 but just barely got under his time by getting everything else just right.
The P/S hose failed right at the start of my sunrise stint. The team fixed that pretty quickly and after the sun came up I was able to improve the fastest lap time by over a second. This was cheating: I drafted a GP1 BMW for the entire lap and made up a bunch of time on the straights.
Because of how the race went, I spent all 8 hours of my driving time at 100% pace. The car held together through that which is a big credit to Chad.
That was among the best experiences in my racing career, I really hope WRL keeps the 24 hours of Sebring on the schedule. That has the potential to be best amateur race in the country for a long time.
I don't have much to say about engine issues. I am sure the data will show oil pressure problems when the oil level was low due to consumption, but the fact is I (and I am sure this is true of Adam and Chad too) hammered the engine without mercy start to finish in every stint and it did not fail.
Chris
Sounds like it all held together well for the enduro.
I did see chad spin on the livesteam, i guess i was just lucky to be watching at the correct time.
do u know if they posted any race stats? How did u guys finish?
I have not been on the track at sebring but i do know that turn 5-7 can be tricky. We park the toterhome at 5 and watch the 24hr imsa race every year. More cars spin there then an olther spot on the track.
