Someone in Connecticut whose username I can't remember pre-filled the oil filter & ended up spinning a main bearing.

dipstick showed full and on-dash oil check level showed 3/4 of that little scale.

Suggestion
Have literally never heard of "pre-filling" an oil filter.

Suggestion
If you don't pre-fill the filter then remember you might need to spill a little extra oil down the filler neck after you fire the car up the first time.

Suggestion
I have read somewhere on this forum that pre-filling the filter isn't recommended as sometimes the oil pump cannot push the air slug through the system.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi peeps,
Like the title says, I'm doing my first oil change and I'm running into a couple of issues.
1. Drain plug. I ordered a new OEM drain plug and washer but the drain plug that is installed is an after market one from ECS. It has a magnet (which by the way had no metal parts on it whatsoever - yay!) and no washer. (See picture)
My question is should I just reinstall the ECS one and if so with or without the washer, or should I install the new OEM drain plug plus washer?
2. Oil filter. I ordered a Porsche OEM oil filter + plastic housing but once under the car I noticed a "regular" metal oil filter was installed. I removed the filter and the car appears to have a different receiver for the oil filter. See picture below.
I know the car had had its IMS serviced, could they have mounted a different type oil filter receiver? The oil line draining into the filter (visible in the picture) sure doesn't seen to be OEM. Or is the part shown removable to reveal the original threads where a Porsche OEM filter can be installed?
Thanks for any help and/or insights you can give me!
I would stick with the magnetic drain plug, always helpful to see if it collects material between oil changes. In regards to the washer, I've ran it without once and didn't have an issue, but still should as general practice.
The oil filter is the LN spin on filter adapter. Makes it easier than the cartridge style that was originally fitted to the car.
List from LN website (I believe it's a early 2000's Corvette thread, can't recall off top of my head):
Mann ML1013, Mahle OC999, or Baldwin B31 oil filters for the Napa Gold 1042 / Wix 51042 filter and we may substitute Napa Gold 1215, Wix 51215, Mann W7015, Mahle OC1063, Hengst H319W, or Baldwin BT223 oil filters for the Napa Gold 1348 / Wix 51348 filter.
Unless Im mistaken, that oil line is feeding an LN Solution replacement of your IMSB. The spin on filter adapter is part of that kit as is the magnetic drain plug.
its a screw on filter that is in 1 piece. its not like the standard filter where you have it in 2 pieces (the filter and you screw the cap on it.
It also looks like there is a tube going somewhere. does it go to the IMS? it could be a ims solution that is lubricated by the engine oil.
Your only option is to purschase the same type of screw on oil fliter. its not more exensive or what ever, its just a different type of filter.
Regarding the drain plug, i would keep the ECS one if it has a magnet on top. For the washer, if it didnt have one and it didnt leak, then i would put it back without a washer. but seeing that you have a washer anyway, you could add it for peace of mind.
eitherway, inspect the drain plug a couple of days after the oil change to ensure its not leaking.
Summary
: with or without washer the ecs drain plug is fine. just control it in a couple of days and you will need a screw on oil filter.
^ ++ What he said
Both are considered upgrades.
The drain plugs generally have an aluminum crush washer, and the aftermarket aluminum plug's torque spec is lower. The LN plug is only 19ft lbs or something ??, Don't know about the ECS one, but they may say. You should check.
Also the original filters have a bypass, such that under some conditions oil will bypass the filter. The aftermarket spin on, using a Napa gold or Wix, don't bypass oil. (And are easier to change!).
Thanks a lot guys, that all makes a lot of sense. I did find a washer for the ECS drain plug BTW, it fell out without me noticing and I just found it on my oil drain pan surface. It's the same washer as the OEM one, so I'll use a new one. Off to the car parts store for a spin-on filter!
Make sure you use the Napa Gold 1348 or equivalent. Pretty good deal to find out youve got the ims solution installed without knowing about it beforehand
That's a great upgrade you have! Avoids a potential IMSB problem and your oil changes will be much easier, and less messy. Fill the new filter with fresh oil when you install it. Only fill the oil to the mid-mark on the oil level gauge, you want to run it at halfway mark and then add only 1/2 qrt at a time.
I have read somewhere on this forum that pre-filling the filter isn't recommended as sometimes the oil pump cannot push the air slug through the system. Someone in Connecticut whose username I can't remember pre-filled the oil filter & ended up spinning a main bearing.
With other cars I always pre-fill my filters. Also, the spun bearing was on a freshly rebuilt engine and this was the initial oil fill. So all passages would have been empty. So that could be a different case.
Thanks guys!
Yes I had watched several youtube videos and had taken that advice to heart. I put in 8 quarts taking into account oil left in the oil pan since I had the rear of the car in the air (car not level).
dipstick showed full and on-dash oil check level showed 3/4 of that little scale.
I will check again tomorrow and top off id necessary and then again once the car has had a heat cycle!
Forgot to mention that my old oil filter had this contraption on it. Its a magnetic attachment that serves to capture metal particles small enough to pass through the oil filter.
Does anyone else use this? I visited two different Napa stores for the replacement filter and nobody in either store had ever seen one of these. Heres a link with more info:

If you don't pre-fill the filter then remember you might need to spill a little extra oil down the filler neck after you fire the car up the first time. If memory serves correct it can take the digital gauge down 2-3 bars.
The filter on the 996 doesn't hold a significant amount of oil, its like 1/4 a quart? I would bet the fill time when you start is measured in milliseconds..
Ever seen how fast a engine runs out of oil when a filter blows off? I saw it once with a rabbit motor on a dyno, it was about like a flash bulb going off..
