It has the Bose system, and at some point in it's history it's had the dash and rear speakers changed for Alpine ones, and it's had the head unit changed to a not great Pioneer Navi unit.

Used ones are much cheaper but I'd rather avoid them because they're probably all just as knackered as mine?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just picked up this beautiful 996 Turbo! Among a few other niggles, the sound system is really bad. It has the Bose system, and at some point in it's history it's had the dash and rear speakers changed for Alpine ones, and it's had the head unit changed to a not great Pioneer Navi unit. The door speakers seem to produce bass down to about 60hz, but only at extremely low volumes. As soon as the volume is turned up it distorts and falls apart. Mids and highs seem ok. I suspect the amp is the culprit? Attached is a photo of the one currently fitted, interestingly the date on it is 2005 but the car is a 2003 - it must be a replacement itself? What are my options? A new Bose amp seems to be about 700. Used ones are much cheaper but I'd rather avoid them because they're probably all just as knackered as mine? I'd be happy replacing it with a different model, but only if it's either a direct swap, or there are adapter cables available. Definitely not interested in doing any rewiring. Could it also be fixed by Bose or someone else?

Bump, hope that's ok, this post was half way down the forum by the time it was approved

POST 3Original post

Sorry, I can't help you with a plug and play recommendation. But I'll talk anyway. The amp I put in mine is a JL VX600/6i. Expensive. 6 channels plus a sub woofer pre-amp output. New speakers. It requires cutting and soldering for signal wires and giant cables to the battery. It has DSP and allows you to tune each channel for frequency and time. Tune it up with a Audio Control microphone and RTA. It sounds phenomenal. That said, most of the time the stereo is off. The sound of the machine is just as phenomenal. Good luck with a fix!

POST 4Original post

Im far from expert, but it doesnt sound like an amp issue to me. Your system is a MOST fibre optic system which brings complications. Little will be plug and play, so Id pull that Pioneer head unit and pray they didnt hack up the system too much. One unit that DOES work with MOST is the PCCM+ system which many extol.
