Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all! Ive recently come to trouble with my lovely 1999 Porsche 911 engine. And before you go asking, no I didnt have an IMS issue. Instead, what I had was just as bad. Lol. Heres the scenario, one day Im driving and low and behold got low on oil. Because of this, as I kept on driving, it started to affect the health of the engine during the same drive. After tearing the engine into hundreds of pieces and finding glitter in my oil pan, I finally got to the crank. Low and behold my main and rod journals were destroyed by 2 deteriorating, spun bearings. So after months and months of searching and not being able to find a decent enough of a crank, Ive come up with a different idea which I need help with. I have the near to impossible to find bicycle styled crank for my 3.4L M96. Can I just find a paddle styled crank and swap it out with that? Is it that easy? I think theyre both 78mm stroke displacements right? So if I just replace it with a paddle styled crank and IMS rod will I be golden? Or is there something Im missing? From the pictures below, do you think I can still save it and replace the bearing with over sized ones? Do you know of any place that sells used good cranks for M96 engines under $2K if the following idea doesnt work? Thanks to all that answer. Cheers.

POST 4Original post

You can buy a good crank on ebay from dc auto or another supplier and polish it. It uses the same crank as the 2.7 boxster. You can find one thats chain style. Sometimes you can find them cheap. It looks like prices have gone up recently though. example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/17440887083...wAAOSwwWpfRXqa
