In my case, it turns out that one of the solder joints was broken (I didn't realized until I disconnected the plug), so I ended up resoldering the electrical connectors on the LSD struts to the wires from the original struts.

Had a set sat on my bench to be installed for months, and finally did it today.

They have electrical contacts on the ends (Stabilus calls these "ElectroLift"), and they evidently provide inputs maybe for the courtesy light and probably the rear glass defroster.
Replace connector since the solder work at one side needed

Next, remove the end caps from the Lift Support Depot struts and the metal rings - replace with the metal rings and connectors from the original struts and voila.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For the 997, she actually recommended going up a bit in compression force - NOT buying the ones for the 996 (disclosure - 997.1 08 Targa 4S here) cost $25 less and have solved my issue - $44 total.
Hey everyone,
I recently bought a 2002 Targa, which has the rear window that opens. The gas-pressure springs/shocks which hold the window up seem to be failing, and the window won't stay open.
I could buy replacement springs here (part 15):
http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...-05/811-03.php
They want to charge $253 per spring which seems insane to me. Anyone know if there's an easy way to fix this?
Here's a pic of the springs on a 997 that I found online:
I just got the part number off of mine and googles it. The number is superseded with a 997 part number. Pelican has them cheaper try this link:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...FILTER_996J=ON
It appears that 1 unit is 2 shocks but I'd clarify that beforehand.
I always liked that feature on a Targa and almost bought one. I would make sure to replace both at the same time. Great cars. Now stop complaining about the price of parts, its a Porsche.
If you're handy in the shop, buy a matching air strut from Amazon (with the same compressed and uncompressed lengths) and graft the fittings from the old strut onto the new one. It'll take some work to do right, but struts cost about $25 each, so you can save yourself a couple hundred bucks...
Found the Cayman part number here:
http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...=98751255103#a
98751255100 gas-pressure spring (2)
Must be a bit different from the 996, there's a L and R version for 996, but 2 of the same spring on the Cayman. Anyone with a Cayman mind snapping some close-up photos of the attach points and emailing them to me, maybe get measurements too? If I can get them attached, might be worth it even if the travel length is a bit different. ($80 cayman parts vs $500 996 targa parts)
Thanks,
Chris

Just got a set custom made by Lift Supports Depot (google for webpage), and they work great. Only charged $18/spring vs $250/spring that Porsche was going to charge!
OEM frunk springs are much cheaper, I think $30/each or so, I'd probably go that route. I think the hatch springs are pricey because Targas are quite rare.
Thanks for the tip.
My rear Targa hatch occasionally comes down, seems to be okay some days and other days it slowly sinks so this is a good thread for me, I have just sent an e-mail to Lift Supports Depot, asking them for a price for all four lifts for my 2002 Targa plus postage to Australia.
And if there is some demand that they may include the Targa in the drop-down menus
I worked with a guy named Lou, email me if you'd like his contact info. Very helpful, was able to choose the right lifts for me after I provided dimensions and some pics of the gas springs. He also put the electrical connectors on the springs, I imagine they're for the rear defrosters.

My lift supports to the rear glass hatch on my 02 996 Targa are also failing.
CHRIS - thanks for tracking that down and posting it.
Yep, the left and right sides have different numbers per Stabilus (0694SB and 0695SX) -- and they are incredibly expensive.
They have electrical contacts on the ends (Stabilus calls these "ElectroLift"), and they evidently provide inputs maybe for the courtesy light and probably the rear glass defroster.
I checked LiftSupportsDepot.com and they do indeed list the Targa, but they say to contact them for info -- which I did (awaiting response).
MY QUESTIONS ARE:
1) Did you get some type of external spring from LiftSupportsDepot that fits over the lifts, or did they send you whole new lift for $18?
2) Did you find any difference in rear defrost and courtesy lights after installing the new stuff?
Pictures of the LiftSupport replacements would be good, if possible.
Thanks.
Stasha,
They were able to give me brand new gas springs with the electrical connectors for $18 each. Didn't have any problems with the courtesy lights or rear defrosters afterwards. The only issue I've had is that the springs aren't as smooth as the stock ones, i.e. the hatch will open/close slowly with varying force along the way.
Thanks,
Chris
I know this is an old thread, but I just ordered a set of rear glass gas springs for my '04 Targa from LiftSupportsDepot. They're $28 each now, as opposed to $18 as mentioned previously, but that's better than the OEM price. I'll post back here with my impressions once I get them installed in the next week or so (they'll probably be just fine).
I received the replacements from Lift Supports Depot and they're great. They're super strong, and the glass actually "pops" open now when I press the release button! All it takes is one finger to lift the glass a couple of inches and the springs take over from there. I love them - especially for the price.
I did learn a couple of things during the installation process though...
At least on my 2004 Targa, Porsche has soldered one end of the electrical connector - where it connects to the spring on the shaft end. Instead of desoldering the connector and resoldering it onto the new gas springs, I found that you can actually unscrew the "socket" from the shaft and pull the whole electrical connector off. I ended up doing this with the OEM springs and simply swapping the whole connector "ring" with the ones on the new springs. I'm attaching a handful of photos that will hopefully help.
Because you can unscrew the "socket" ends from these springs, I see no reason why you couldn't buy your springs from anywhere - as long as they're the proper length - and then move the electrical connectors over from the OEM springs. However, I will say that after talking with Lou over at Lift Supports Direct, it may be worth buying from him just for the peace of mind. He seems like a really nice guy, and he's very quick to respond!
+1 for Lift Supports Depot. Had a set sat on my bench to be installed for months, and finally did it today. Perfect fit, re-soldered mine rather than replace the connector since the solder work at one side needed replacing
Just wanted to add another +1 to the Lift Supports Depot. I ordered a set of struts on Friday, received them on Monday and just installed them. Took less than 20 minutes. Thanks to Fixxxer for the tip about swapping the electrical connectors over. The solder on both of mine were good so it made it even easier.
One thing to note is the price has gone up: They're now $69.00 for a pair. Still far better than the $500.00+ for the Porsche ones!
Hate to be devils advocate here, I have a 2002 Targa po bragged about how much he saved on hatch shocks. They are so stiff that I have to watch it like hawk if I am with another person. Some person who puts there hand on one edge to shut the hatch will break the glass. Its thin and you can see it bend. It must be shut with two hands. Any of the top or rear glass breaks you are gonna be in a world of trouble. Ever price the rear glass? You dont want too...
Strange. Are they from LiftSupportDepot? Mine feel virtually identical to stock except now they don't sag.
I usually lower the glass with one hand in the center and then press it down with both hands so the lock engages. Don't know if that's the "proper" method or not.
I have a similar issue on the ones for the back of my jeep , they are too much force.
I think they are re-using too many part numbers to reduce inventory/overhead..
THANK YOU
@CJWessing
!! I got the same ones thanks to you. Only question is how did you make the electrical connection to the window defroster? Lift supports depot send me little metal rings, but they didnt send the cable piece. Any help here would be super super appreciated.
It's been awhile since I installed mine, but I think I just had to disconnect and reconnect them to the new struts, don't remember having to do any soldering. Here's a pic of what each side of my struts look like now.

Just got my rear struts from Lift Support Depot (LSD) - they fit very well and I haven't had any issues with opening and closing the hatch. Great question about the electrical contacts - here is one option:
You can unplug the connectors at the rear window (defrost connectors - plastic) and then remove the old struts along with the connectors (that are soldered to the contacts on the struts themselves). Then, if you clamp the rod portion of the old strut, you can unscrew the socket end caps and remove the metal rings. Next, remove the end caps from the Lift Support Depot struts and the metal rings - replace with the metal rings and connectors from the original struts and voila.
In my case, it turns out that one of the solder joints was broken (I didn't realized until I disconnected the plug), so I ended up resoldering the electrical connectors on the LSD struts to the wires from the original struts. Photo of the finished product attached.
@911Canuck, any chance you know who you spoke with or a part number? I need to replace my OEM hatch struts, and the customer service rep I've corresponded with isn't "Lou"
QUOTE=Idaho911;17742506]They have an eBay store as well. $69 (nice) for the pair./QUOTE
But they you don't get to talk with Tonii - she and their team are great. For the 997, she actually recommended going up a bit in compression force - NOT buying the ones for the 996 (disclosure - 997.1 08 Targa 4S here) cost $25 less and have solved my issue - $44 total.
