Suspected cause
But, I still think the best option is probably the Del Ray Customs aftermarket taillights in red/clear.

Suggestion
So, you're saying keep the OE taillights and replace the bulbs with LEDs and then tint smoke?

Suggestion
Replacing the tail lights with LEDs ruins that design theme and it makes the reflector strip look out of place.

I don't like the crease running across the middle of the taillight.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Porsche 996 Wide Body LED Tail Lights for the 996TT C4S GT2.
Any one have any experience getting these done? Was it a clean install? Plug an Play Fit, wiring? Any warning lights? Do they work? Are they Reliable? Look sort of good, just know nothing about the quality and what do others think?
Clean Install?
Reliable?
Good? Bad? Ugly?
Here is a picture I found online with them installed
I don't like the crease running across the middle of the taillight. Also the tinted version doesn't match up to the center reflector which would drive me crazy. I'd rather have the normal top clear/bottom red design of the original WB taillights so that it doesn't look like a mashup abomination. My $.02
i have seen it in person and it looks terrible.
the problem is that they should have matched the color / sheen of the middle reflector of the C4S.
On a turbo where no such middle stripe/reflector exists it looks ok. But on a C4S, it's a miss.
In my opinion, they are hideous. On a C4S, they are shockingly hideous. They make one of the best ever 911 rear ends look terrible. I imagined that they would be bad on a C4S, but seeing that photo makes me realize that they are worse than I thought.
That's my $.02 worth!
It's up to you, really.
In my opinion, the OE tail lights and the reflector strip on the 996 C4S really work well together to create a specific, throwback look. Replacing the tail lights with LEDs ruins that design theme and it makes the reflector strip look out of place. I also think that the white, inner section of the LED lights looks odd as it doesn't match the lines of the car. It gives the rear a droopy appearance in my opinion. The fact that the red plastic on the LEDs doesn't match the OE red strip doesn't help either.
From a design perspective, the clear section doesn't match up with the trunk line which seems like an afterthought to me. As stated, if they would've reproduced the original design but in more crystal clear plastics than the original and fitted with LED's, that would've been the best combo IMO.
I like the standard color red lights (similar to the ones on the guards red c4s). I have a few pictures of them on a blue car and they look good. I will have to see them in person before I drop $800 on lights. I would prefer to spend the money on a suspension instead.
Another vote for nightshade on the center reflector. Just match the tint of the lights and it would look fine.
It definitely looks like *** with the mismatched colors.
If you don't want to screw up the reflector, I imagine there are several DiNoc colors that would complement the rear of the car that would look less out-of-place. Gray carbon fiber might not look so bad.
There are also vinyl wraps that are paintable - wrap it, hit it with seal grey (or whatever the car is)...
I agree with the suggestions on tinting the lights and the reflector strip on a C4S. If you got it all to match, then it would certainly look better. This might be a good option if you really want LEDs on your 996 C4S.
Assuming would have to smoke the third brake lights out on rear and spoiler as well. Love the LEDs just not sure how I feel about the smoked out colors.
Juice may not be worth the squeeze here. May spend that extra cash on a built in radar with laser diffusers instead.
Back to reading the article on a lunatic having sex with an alligator perhaps one of the craziest thing I have ever read.
I want to change out the blacked out taillights on my car with clear. I like the looks of these LED taillights. Any feedback on reliability and function?
I was at Del Rey Customs last Tuesday upgrading my audio system.
Saw a 996 turbo with the upgraded LED's. They looked good . I had the install guy operate both turn signals and brakes
Nice update on a turbo.
Forgot to mention , they were nice and bright even at mid day .
So, you're saying keep the OE taillights and replace the bulbs with LEDs and then tint smoke? What I've got now is OE taillights tinted black. I'd like to see the OE taillights with no tint but with LED bulbs. But, I still think the best option is probably the Del Ray Customs aftermarket taillights in red/clear. Not 100% certain on that, but that's how I'm leaning. I do want to pull the taillights now just to be certain that the tint is not just film - I'm about 90% sure the tint is either paint or part of the lens.
Good to hear that. I wish I was going to be in SoCal soon, I'd love the chance to swing by their shop. Sounds like a cool place.
FWIW, they guys over on 6speedonline appear to be having lots of problems with the lights. There appear to have been quite a few that didn't function properly and had to be exchanged. Hopefully the manufacturer has addressed their quality issues and this was just a temporary glitch. There are quite a few posts about this over on that site.
No I would go Del Ray clear, then smoke them and my center reflector to match with VHT night shades.
I am going to smoke the rear on mine anyways to see how it looks in VHT night shades. Another fellow did his and it looks killer!
The pic below is VHT night shades with a couple coats of clear.
^Oh, I get it now. My bad. I don't have the center reflector on my new car (996TT) so wouldn't need to smoke to match two different color pieces (new taillights and old center reflector). That being the case, on a guards red car, would you go with the red/clear with no tint or do the red/smoke? I'm leaning toward brightening the car up by going red/clear LED taillight conversion/clear side markers/clear LED 3rd brake light.
