While I usually do my own work , I don't currently have access to a hoist and the lsd & suspension set up are a bit more than I wanted to take on so all this is being installed by Scan Automotive in North Van .

Should keep the car happy until gen 2 997 C2s cars come down in price and I can afford a car with a motor where the problem was eliminated.

Bottom line from an engineering point of view is the decision to use a single casting for both heads and an intermediate shaft as a work around was made to keep cost down , back office rather than an engineering call.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Once porsche came back from the brink of bankruptcy , they fixed it.
Hello , my name is Zac
I've been reading the forum for a while , thank you for all the discussion and tips .
I've always owned and worked on European cars and motorcycles .
Starting with aircooled vws , too many to count . And I've currently got a shed of European bikes , a 1964 ducati 250 Daytona, 2007 1100s Multistrada , bmw r100rs etc .
So I've had the euro bug for a long time . German in particular .
Back as a teen ager in the 80s I had the obligatory white 930 turbo poster on my wall.
Always wanted a 911. We restored a 3.2 but sold it just as it was completed so I didn't drive it much .
So after saving up by working construction up north , I bought a 2004 996 C2 in Atlas Grey . It had 50000 km (32000 miles) on it
It was a summer car for a local small businessman .
Not bad spec , hardback heated leather sport seats , black interior
PSM
Bose premium sterio
18" carrera 02 wheels
Manual
It had been sitting for a while and the brakes and air on needed doing . Leaf rot!
I put in a lowball offer to the main dealer who took it in trade .
It was accepted and I brought it home .
Replaced the aircon rads and installed sebro rotors , goodridge ss brake lines and cool carbon pads . And did a full service .
I've enjoyed it for the last 18 months.
I started collecting parts as money allowed , mostly from pelican .
I found a limited slip diff from a 2004 40th anniversary model for 400 bucks on ebay .i had it rebuilt with Guard Transmission internals , it's now much more robust than the stock internals . 60/40
I slowly bought a set of h&r street performance coilovers and frount and rear H&r sway bars .
A full set of powerflex suspension bushes .
L&n ims bearing
Uprated rms
Top mounts , all the rest new suspension bits .
New clutch , and all clutch components , new single mass flywheel .
While I usually do my own work , I don't currently have access to a hoist and the lsd & suspension set up are a bit more than I wanted to take on so all this is being installed by Scan Automotive in North Van .
James runs a great shop.
Anyway , I pick it up tomorrow .
Can't wait to drive it with the fresh suspension and lsd .
I hope to be more active in the forum , to learn from you all and share my own mechanical knowledge .
Thanks
Zac
Nice
Join pca cwr and youll get a discount at porsche centre vancouver thatll make the cost pretty close to pelicans price...before including shipping and conversion.
Cheers
Congrats on the car. 993 owners (and KrazyK) will try to convince you that you're an idiot.
The rest of the population will be congratulatory and/or envious of your new acquisition. Enjoy it!
I had a 3.2 1988 sold it pretty much as soon as I finnished the restoration .
Someone offered me a lot more than I had in it while I was putting the trim on it after the paint shop.
I understand the aircooled thing but not the prices.
I'm pretty tall and like heat and aircon .
Plus , I'm just loving driving it .
If you come from an Italian car and bike perspective , a 996 isn't that scary.
PCA-CWR auto-x is on the 26thof sept - bring it out and try that new suspension
(unless you're going to rennsport - an acceptable excuse not to come out!)
Congrats! A great looking 996. Check out the BBC (bob's breakfast club) drive with PCA CWR - early Saturday morning run up the Sea to Sky highway. Always a great drive with a fine pack of Porsches.
A suggestion - do your research before replacing your IMSB with an aftermarket bearing.
I'm a mechanical engineer with 22 years expirience working with mining and heavy earthmoving equipment .ive even worked with jet engines and turboprops.
I understand that every component ever installed in every machine ever built by mankind has a failure rate .
Engineering and maintenance combine to reduce these failure rates to a tolerable level . Could a l&n n bearing fail? A dozen have . Any small scale bespoke manufacturing ads risk. My understanding is the risk is substantially less than leaving it stock.
If I didn't have this understanding And tolerance I wouldn't have bought a 996 in the first place as my only point of reference would be Internet hyperbole .
I have a collection of Ducatis , and have dabbled with italian cars .
If you want to run a high risk machine, drive a rubber belt driven ohc, italian high compression interference head machine for a while . Or any piston light aircraft.
The 996 isn't that bad , it's not even the scariest of its time contemporary German cars . Try a 2.7 twin turbo , Audi all road with air ride suspension and an automatic tranny .
Terrible car , except as an engineering study . Lol
my intent is to treat the imsb like a wear item, every clutch , new bearing .
A Ceramic ball bearing with that maintainece/ replacement interval , fine with me .
I'm wary of roller bearings / thrust loading and oil injection units add multiple failure points .
Simple and robust is my preference .
The mark two double row pro version might be worth a look next clutch
Should keep the car happy until gen 2 997 C2s cars come down in price and I can afford a car with a motor where the problem was eliminated.
A long time engineer here too, so I do understand the internal workings of engines and bearings. My background has been mostly American muscle cars and Japanese superbikes, though I do appreciate Italian bikes (especially Ducati) and cars. Porsches - just the past 6 years.
Just sayin' - the clutch can last a lot more than 20K miles.
Fair enough ( although I doubt I'll get a clutch to last that long , Lol)
James at scan did tell me they had one fail almost instantly , eyes wide open.
Might have been someone you know .
Bottom line from an engineering point of view is the decision to use a single casting for both heads and an intermediate shaft as a work around was made to keep cost down , back office rather than an engineering call.
So all 996 and gen 1 997s have a risk of implosion . The bearing in both motors is undersized for the loads . So you either install a harder one , or mechanically lubricate it or both . None of these is going to make an engineer sleep at night .
Hence the 997 gen 2 and 991 motor .
Once porsche came back from the brink of bankruptcy , they fixed it.
Not the first time
The 2.7 had case stud failures , now all those catastrophic failures have been cured by after market case savers .
All pre 3.2 motors had cam tensioner issues until the 3.2 came out with a solution that was retrofit able back to the 2.0 motors .
The 964 was probably the worst 911 motor of all time , pretty much all of them have been o ringed and rebuilt by now , do now they are worth money.
10 years ago you couldn't give them away .
There's no easy answer to the IMSB issue, as I'm sure you know. Even now with the 997 engine and larger IMSB in my car I'm still thinking about Mezger or DFI, even though I love the car.
Good stuff! Hope to see you on one of the PCA drives soon. We did any early morning run to Squamish this morning with the BBC - a very wet drive with some hydro-planing but fun anyhow. About 20 cars showed up. Another BBC next Saturday.
