Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Took it to the Porsche Parade, attended two DE events - moved up through the first two run groups and cleared to solo (even though I flew off the track three times).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just passed my first year of 996 ownership. Absolutely the most fun car Ive owned...great experience so far. Took it to the Porsche Parade, attended two DE events - moved up through the first two run groups and cleared to solo (even though I flew off the track three times). Taught my wife to drive a manual. Lots of road trips - 10,000 miles put on the car. Kids love it - boosters from target fit nicely in the back. Its my daily driver when the weather is bearable. Anything that has needed attention was promptly addressed...proactive items taken care of, etc
All items done have been DIY except for the big service noted below - clutch and various LN bits. All in I've spent around $5K addressing everything.
Heres a recap of what Ive done, experienced, paid for, etc
Purchased the car in Sept of 2014 then proceeded to:
replace the poly rib belt - $39.89
perform TSB 6420 - windshield rattle - foam rubber cord - $18.00
refinished three brake calipers - $27.99
Noticed front trunk (frunk) light wasnt working when open, sprayed micro-
switch with contact cleaner to fix - $0.00
Flushed brake fluid - IL of ATE - $12.00
Oil and filter change - $99.96
Rebuilt the SAI pump bearings to fix squeal - $0.00
Flushed clutch hydraulics with more ATE fluid - $12.00
Replaced center brake light on moveable spoiler - $119.00
Had my neighbors shop refurbish and powdercoat some well used C4 wheels - plus mounted four new Conti DWS all seasons for cold weather use- $847
Replaced drivers front parking bulb - $10
CEL came on after washing the car - diagnosed as coils - replaced all coils and plugs - $312
Water pump, coolant cap, low temp thermostat, full coolant flush - $435.62
Big service - performed at Kraftwerks in Ohio (certified LN installer) - clutch, LNE Dual Row Pro retrofit, RMS, spin-on adapter, chain tensioners, and other bits - $3100
Transmission flush - $50.85
Cabin air filter - $24
Oil pressure sender - $61.25
Oil and filter change - $105.16
New front left wheel liner - $98.47
Next up is the M030 ROW suspension and new summer tires - the two track days + 10k miles have destroyed the Michelins.
Heres a shot of the 996 ready to hit the track a couple of weeks ago!
Thank you for sharing. Really helps those of us looking to acquire a 996 on what to expect (at least one 12 month example).
Was all the engine work, besides the big service at Kraftwerks done without removing the engine (like the water pump)?
With the miles and track use, I think that is reasonable costs. The big service isn't something done every year and hopefully you wouldn't normally have to replace tires every year.
So the end result was about $1050 for a dyi ($5000-$3100 and then minus $850 for the wheels, tires).
You're welcome! Just washed her an 2 hours ago after it got dark and cool enough. The only thing I haven't done is the water pump and this weekend I was going to take her to Vegas and what happens all of a sudden: A water pump discussion!
I agree - very reasonable costs. The only unexpected failures were the cracked coils and a worn out oil pressure sender. Not bad for a car built almost 13 years ago.
I have service records going back to 2005 for the car. The engine has never been dropped - even for the clutch and preventative work by Jeff at Kraftwerks. The transmission has been separated at least twice, the engine likely lowered a bit (for AOS and a coolant expansion tank replacement before I purchased it) but never fully dropped from what I can tell.
Water pump is an easy DIY job.
$5000 in maintenance costs in one year for a $15,000 car isn't exactly something to be proud of. It just proves the point that the maintenance costs are still figured on the original MSRP. Sad really.
I usually don't confuse information sharing with pride. But then again I'm not "Krazy".
The highlight of 996 ownership was driving Pete's 997 4.0 monster. Just waiting until the spring so he can kick my butt around the track!
