Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

MY00 911 996 311 Carrera CAB 2dr Man 6sp 3.4i While cleaning out the air duct to the front rads on my "aero kit" fitted bumper I came across a metal cable with a loop, anyone know if this has a use? Have checked the 996 parts catalog and the only item that looks like it is called "Safety Rope"! See pic attached.

POST 3Original post

there is also one behind the left rear tail light for the engine cover release.

POST 4Original post

From the factory, those are extremely difficult to reach in front of the passenger side wheel. You have to take off the wheel and the fender liner to find it. And even then, you need a hook tool to reach it. It looks like a prior owner did you a favor and moved it behind the bumper cover. That should be A LOT more accessible by reaching up through an opening at the bottom of the bumper.

POST 5Original post

I appreciate the thoughtful Porsche engineers who put this release cable in the front, but I think I improved on it. When I removed my front bumper cover to clean the radiators, I found the cable and relocated it to the tow eye hole. I drilled a small hole just above the threaded tow eye hole, then ran the cable through the hole and then I tucked it into the threaded hole before replacing the bumper cover. Now, if the battery is dead, or I stupidly lock my key in the frunk , . . . I can just remove the plastic plug from the tow eye hole and pull the cable to open the frunk. I think this is easier than removing the wheel and wheel well cover. If I have to get the car towed, the cable does not prevent the tow eye from being screwed in. And, if I stupidly lose my car key, I have the spare key in the frunk, (oops, keep this a secret, okay?)
