Suggestion

I think normal operation for the Tiptronic is the LED in the instrument cluster that shows you what gear you are in changes right away and then the actual gear shift happens maybe a 1/2 second later.

Suggestion

I almost always drive in manual and have reset the trans several times to get it to relearn a more aggressive behavior.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a way to reprogram the transmission comp to provide for faster and firmer shifts? Thinking a tuner may have enhanced shift logic. I've searched and see only to drive it hard so it self adjusts but if falls back to lazy shift speed even in manual mode. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

POST 2Original post

I would like for our Tiptronic to shift faster, but have never heard of anything that can program it to do that. I think normal operation for the Tiptronic is the LED in the instrument cluster that shows you what gear you are in changes right away and then the actual gear shift happens maybe a 1/2 second later.

Understood, even when watching aggressive driving videos of a tiptronic it still is pretty lazy in manual mode performing the actual shift (not the driver request to shift). I did see where a modified valve body is available but reports were the shift's were too harsh. It's a simple as commanding the trans. comp. to provide for more line pressure based on torque demand. I'm surprised no one in the Porsched tuning community hasn't offered this option, or maybe they've been unable to gain access to the programming.

POST 4Original post

I was a tiptronic skeptic when i purchased my 996. After 4 months of ownership I have zero desire to own a manual gearbox. My shifts are firm and respectably fast for a non DCT. Perhaps its due to the previous owner having the transmission serviced right before i purchased it ?

POST 5Original post

Which Tippy do you have? I have the Mercedes 722 and it shifts like a Buick while driving casually, when pushing it it's very much more sport oriented. It's really cool to come up to a fast corner, brake down, turn in, have the Tip downshift without my doing anything, and pull through the apex like a pro. Have to be running at high RPM to get into that part of the Tip programming. I believe that Kevin at Ultimate Motorwerks has a Tip flash for the 722.

None, I've seen them pushed hard and the gear shifts are still pretty lethargic. Deciding between tip and manual but really don't want to row gears. So far it appears rowing is my only option if shift speed/firmness cannot be address in the aftermarket.

POST 7Original post

Is it possible to be more specific on the slower gear changes? Is that noticeable on both upshifts and downshifts? Are there specific gear shifts where this is noticeable, e.g. from 2nd to 3rd, or downshfting from 4th to 3rd? One thing I like to do on occasion is simply floor it from stopped in auto mode and let the car fly -- passengers get quite a thrill. And I don't notice any slow shifting in that scenario. But I would say yes that manual downshift from 3rd to 2nd seems to have some lag -- it seems I have to "preshift" a split second from 3rd to 2nd ahead of when I actually want the car in 2nd.

POST 8Original post

The secret to an enjoyable Tiptronic experience is to drive it in manual mode and keep the revs in the sweet spot between 3 and 7 thousand. The only time mine is driven in auto is when the wife is driving it. With a good driver it will out perform a manual in the twisties any day and you can focus on driving.

Mine shifts quick but not harsh at WOT. Faster than I can shift my manual 996 - and it doesn't unspool the turbos. If you're wanting that off-on surge of a well done manual shift I don't think the Tip will provide that.

POST 10Original post

There is one who does them for the turbo cars which helps them shift a little quicker. I don’t know if he can do anything for the non turbo cars. I’m happy with how mine shifts, but it’s also a turbo car and I haven’t driven one in a regular 996 so I don’t know if it’s any different.

POST 11Original post

I have a 03 C4S with tip, the shifts are in my opinion slow no mater how I drive it. I almost always drive in manual and have reset the trans several times to get it to relearn a more aggressive behavior. I have also serviced the trans to see if new fluid would help, it did not. My sons 07 350Z shifts stupid fast and even rev matches. I use to drag race automatics 40 years ago and they would chirp the tires on every up-shift, I really loved that.
