At the price I've been given I could pretty much change the colour every few months if I wanted to.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

The lines aren't great, and I'll probably re-do it again with better quality fine line tape (the stuff I used was supposed to be fine line, but didn't work as advertised).

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

G'day all. I'm a fairly new member. Bought a 996 a month ago. Beautiful condition, actually not a scratch on it, just a slightly faded steering wheel and brake handle. Only thing I'm doing to this is spacers, and a colour change. Currently it's some kind of darkish blue and here in South Florida in my home away from home, it shows dirt if you even look at it with a piece of dust in your hand. I've seen a couple of dip threads here, but mostly for wheels. I'm dipping the entire car, and getting a gloss so it's still shiny. Anyone done this already and have any pics or ideas? At the price I've been given I could pretty much change the colour every few months if I wanted to. Pics or thoughts or both would be appreciated. Attached is a pic of it on the left next to the one my mate just bought after I got mine. Dark blue? Dunno but it has to change. I don't believe there's another thread for this exact topic, but if there is apologies up front! M

if you're looking for crazy dip suggestions, here's one...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Matte yellow is a consideration for sure. The one above....well.....it looks more like something a girlfriend would do to her man's car if she was angry.

POST 6Original post

Personally I'd rather do a vinyl wrap as it's more durable and their glossy wraps are actually glossy like paint, unlike plastidip which isn't truly glossy no matter how much "Glossifier" you put on, lol. I've personally tried both and I'll never go back to plastidip for anything remotely long term or glossy finish. If you are going to plastidip, trade in your car for an Audi. Ok, rant off. You can look at 6speedonline as a few members have had their car dipped for awhile now.

This would be pretty cool...Neochrome Chameleon Pearl

++ Love that look!

POST 10Original post

Someone I know plactidip his 928 and I'm not sure what happend but even on the small Facebook pictures it looks horrible so I can just imagine what it looks like in person. Do a really good research on it and don't only look at the pictures where all went well.

POST 11Original post

I did my wheels to hide some curbing and found that I preferred the look to shiny black paint.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm dropping by Dip Your Car tomorrow to have a look first hand at a couple of cars that have been dipped. You're right IMo000 it's too hard to tell from the pics. I can get a wrap done, but honestly, I'd rather save the bucks til I decide if I like the colour I get. Thanks for the pics and ideas folks! Stay tuned for the results

It's the car I just sold, yes.

I like the black look. But I don't think it hid the curb rash very well.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 11590121

It was quite a bit better than when the metal was showing through the black paint!

POST 17Original post

^^ I am sure. They look much better. Sorry i did not mean to come across as critical..I love black wheels on silver cars...I've been thinking of dipping mine as well.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 11590230

No problem. I don't usually go for the black wheel look -- that car came with it, and the paint was peeling. After I curbed the wheel, I decided to try the rubbercan approach, and thought it looked better than gloss black, but with the caveat that no black wheels look good when they're dirty, and brake dust stands out surprisingly clearly on them! I think I'll stick to silver wheels on the next car.

POST 19Original post

I've got a couple Plastidip ideas that I can share. First, with the "glossifier" they sell - it really makes it more of a very shiny satin, nothing close to a gloss. I used a bit of their smoke, followed by about 4-5 coats of the gloss over my tail lights. It looks good, but it doesn't look gloss. Just keep that in mind if that's the direction you want to go. I have a friend that plastidipped his Celica navy blue - honestly, I don't think it looks that good. I think you'd be better off going with a pearl blue, etc. For me... give me a few weeks and I'll show you what I've got. I have an arctic silver car, and plan on doing the wheels in the anthracite metallic, as well as putting a matching anthracite racing stripe on the car.

POST 20Original post

I did my wheels in anthracite about a week or two ago, and wanted more - so I took an evening and decided I wanted to make my car look awesome - so I spent some time masking it off, and put on some anthracite racing stripes. Two pictures: Here's the car immediately after removing all the masking tape/plastic. Remember, when you're doing anything requiring a fine line, you need to spray the final coat wet and IMMEDIATELY remove the any masking that defines a fine line. You have about 3-4 minutes before it dries too much, in my experience. Here's the car a few days later, everything dry, in the sunlight - and all geared up for a road trip

POST 21Original post

^^^^^ That looks terrible! I can see the edge lines on the stripes are all over the place, so I can just imagine how bad is up close in real life. There seems to be a lot of streaking on that paint too or all this is just an optical illusion?

POST 22Original post

Thanks for the unfiltered feedback? The streaking evened out as the stuff set. The lines aren't great, and I'll probably re-do it again with better quality fine line tape (the stuff I used was supposed to be fine line, but didn't work as advertised). That being said, it's not really too evident from more than a foot or two away. After all, plastidip generally isn't talked about as a viable alternative to a $6k paint job... more like a "costs a few bucks and looks good from 2-3 feet away". This little project cost me $18 and a few minutes of my time.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 11628376

If you really like the stripes, may I suggest vinyl? It will come out a lot sharper and it will be a lot more durable. If you buy the 3m Dinoc 1080 film(premium), it will cost you about $36 in material but will be easier to install and last a very long time.

POST 24Original post

i'd do a wrap before plastidip...plastidip has been known to affect the original paint/gloss it is applied to over time; and if you ever want to go back to original (ie sell the car) this may matter Also wrap should last longer and be a bit more durable....

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I know this is a delay but I've been around the world a couple of times for work stuff since September last year. I got the wheels dipped and the calibers sprayed red. Looks OK. Still considering the rest of the car, I might, I might not. I'm heading down to the Dip Your Car HQ tomorrow afternoon to have a look up close at a couple that they've done there and will think more on it. I added 15mm spacers all the way around too. Fills it out nicely

POST 26Original post

In real life plasti-dipped cars don't look as good as the pictures. Wrap looks good up close.
