For $30 you can completely change the look of your wheels, without removing tires, and then switch to another color 2 weeks later if you so choose.

With the dark blue (what IS this color on a Porsche officially called anyway?) it changes the whole vibe of the car compared to the standard light grey turbo twists

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone "Plasti-dipped" their entire 996?
Any experience on...
What it costs to have it profesionally applied?
How long it lasts?
Is the rubberized coating protective (minor stone chips, winter road salt, etc)?
Is it easy to remove?
I've seen a number of videos, and it looks really interesting, but I trust members of this forum significantly more than Fonzy's at this point......Welcome any guidance...
Price really depends on area; what I might pay in WI is probably very different than what someone else would pay in CA.
From the little bit I've read about it, when applied professionally with a spray gun it can last over a year. I nearly got my last car dipped before deciding against it.
It's easy to remove, just peel back slowly. Prepping the car before applying the dip is key; less dirt = easier to remove. Good thing about it is that if you get rock chips, you just need to spray a little more dip on there to recover the chip.
All that being said, if I was looking to change the color of my car I would lean towards a vinyl wrap. I think vinyl looks better, more color options, but is probably 2-3x more. However, I will be plasti-dipping my oem 17" wheels black this weekend.
It's easy to remove until you see all the over spray that goes through the door cracks etc that's impossible to remove. Don't plastidip a car, get it wrapped.
The coating is protective, but it nicks/tears/gouges easily, and while you can repair it, the repairs are imperfect.
I would PlastiDip something that I had primered but didn't have the money to paint - but I'd vinyl something I really wanted to look decent and wanted to actually protect the paint.
x2.
I've dipped and also vinyl wrapped various parts before and I would definitley go vinyl wrap route if you plan on keeping it longer than a year like that.
Have you ever seen a dipped car up close? On the internet, they might look ok but in person, most of them look like azz.
Some of the cons of a dip is that it can eat into your paint if your paint is soft since it does contain a form of paint thinner to thin down the dip agent. I've seen guys that had to polish their whole car after taking off the dip. Another issue is that dip isn't really that durable if there are any chips or rips in it. You can't take it to a pressure car wash or it will find any areas that might've been exposed to a rock chip or any tears/scratches and start lifting slowly from that point onward.
Plastidip kit = ~$300 and that's for a flat job(Glossifier, LOL, will be extra)
Vinyl Wrap material = ~$600 to do whole car
my $.02
To be honest, I've never even seen a dipped
part
that looked good up close, let alone an entire car.
Personally, I've never understood the appeal of the stuff.
I like it for wheels and stuff where you can easily switch it up for a new look. For $30 you can completely change the look of your wheels, without removing tires, and then switch to another color 2 weeks later if you so choose.
In real life a dipped car looks good from 5 ft. Definitely wrap it if you want a clean look.
I did the wheels and rear bumper on my C5. It looked good in person.
Very helpful...Thanks. Re wrapping, I guess I would probably go to a pro, as I doubt I could do a decent job of managing something as curvy as the rear C4S.... How do the professionals deal with things like the chromed "Carrera 4" script and the badging? Do they remove and apply to the vinyl, or do they cut around them? Is the wrap hard to remove? How long does it last?
I'm shopping for e C4S right now, and have seen cars with solid interiors and drive trains, but with chips, scratches, fading paint....etc, and the wrapping/dipping idea came as a way to improve the look of the car while I wait for an opportune time to address the exterior issues... mechanical remediations/upgrades will come first.
I haven't plasti-dipped the entire car. I'd have to see one up close before I do that. Some pics look nice, but I've seen more horrible pics than nice ones so up close and touchy feely etc is the way to go. I did however get my turbo twists done yesterday. I also got the calibers changed to red for ****s and giggles.
Impressive job, nice guy who did it, and good money's worth.
I also added 15mm spacers all the way around to fill out the car. Happy with it for a while now.
