Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, So I'm considering switching something in to replace the stock exhaust, as I'm looking for a bit more sound. I know I'm going to gain next to nothing in performance, so I am looking at my used options. What exhausts would fit a 996 Carrera 2? I found a few GT3 options that seem to claim they fit ...... but I am not 100% convinced of that. The car is a 2001 996 3.4L. Would any other years/generations fit, while I'm at it? I think a 996 C4/C4s fitment would also work, but definitely not TT. Any help welcome. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Best exhaust mod for your car is FD "Fister" motorsports. http://fdmotorsports.net/fister-exhaust-996

Honestly, this would've been my first choice. Problem is I'm in Japan, so a core exchange isn't likely to work ....... and I am not convinced anyone here has heard of this mod.

POST 4Original post

Look at the picture It is a simple job for an exhaust shop or even someone with a Tig welder and some determination.

Hmm. Maybe I should go hunt down some welding shops in the neighbourhood, see what they can concoct. I read that the mod needed for MK1 mufflers is a bit different from MK2 - this thread seems to suggest it: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...cs-please.html Is that correct?

POST 6Original post

That thread has pics of both. The pic I sent is the one that works best on MK1 mufflers. The 2nd other pic is a copy of the way Porsche ran the Sport exhaust. It is much quieter on MK1 mufflers. That is why the shorter setup was tried. One thing that either of these mods do is give the 996 a better "voice" without the RPM dependent droning many other, much more expensive, systems produce. Bring the pics to a muffler shop and ask them if they can do it for you. Probably be under $100US if you bring them the mufflers. They should have the pipe 1 3/4 - 2" dia works well. I bought a 2" hole saw cut my own and fit the pipe. A welder charged me ~$60 to weld them.

Do the mufflers have to come off for the job, or can they do it straight on the car?

POST 8Original post

Have to come off. Which is pretty easy if the car hasn't been driven on salty roads. Soak everything with your favorite penetrating oil. ( 50-50 acetone/ATF works wonders just don't get it on paint) Loosen the 4 bolts (2 per side) on the muffler to cat pipe sleeve clamps. Slide the clamps toward the cat (center of the car) until you see the pipe end. Unbolt the 6 (3 each side) muffler mount bolts and drop the muffler(s) out. If you jack the car up and remove the rear wheels it will be much easier to get in there and also to pull the mufflers forward down and out.
