I installed an LN spin on adapter about 3,000 miles ago along with the included NAPA Gold spin on filter from the kit sold on their website.
Leading evidence: 'Install ln spin' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check installation and torque' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The adapter was fitted prior to my ownership, but it appears to be good to go now *fingers crossed*
Replace rubber ring, reinstalled the adapter and torqued

I replaced the rubber ring, reinstalled the adapter and torqued to spec, screwed the oil filter on, then started the car back up.

The thing loosened up on me after a oil change because I probably over tightened the filter on the previous change.

Suggestion
First oil change on my LN spin on and the only issue I had was the center fitting that the filter threads on partially backed out as I took the filter off.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I installed an LN spin on adapter about 3,000 miles ago along with the included NAPA Gold spin on filter from the kit sold on their website. I lubed the O-ring, screwed it up toward the engine, and then torqued it to 18 ft-lbs as prescribed by the LN website. I hand tightened the spin on filter.
I watch my oil level all the time and noticed it's been slowly losing on the electronic gauge but have never noticed an oil spots. It's never dropped to critically low levels and the oil pressure has always been okay.
I just happened to notice a spot on my garage floor and jacked the car up, finding the spin on adapter had loosened and was now leaking. The dipstick showed I was about a quart low. I retorqued the adapter and put a new filter on.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this a known issue with these? I did a forum search and found no other postings about this so doesn't appear to be an epidemic.
So in theorizing on the why...
My torque wrench is from Harbor Freight. Yeah, I know. So perhaps their 18 ft-lbs is not quite there.
I live in the Pittsburgh metro area and the streets in the city every winter fall into a desperate state of disrepair, and it puts my car through its paces.
Does this seem reasonable to you guys or did I commit so grave error during installation?
I'm a bit paranoid about this now and thinking about switching back to the OE cartridge and cup. As much as I like the idea of full filtration, I think it would be quite unfortunate if I were to lose the adapter in the middle of the road somewhere.
This is not a common issue. I developed that component, used the first one, and every engine that we build has one installed.
That said, we've not had this issue, even once. Did you oil the threads upon assembly, or assemble dry?
If you are worried about it, don't remove it, simply put one dot of blue loctite on the threads.
No, I just oiled the O-ring. That said I wouldn't be surprised if some oil got on the threads, but I didn't intentionally slather oil onto them.
I'll get some blue Loctite. Thanks.
I'm with Jake on this one. I have the adapter and it has 30,000 some miles on it, and many oil changes w/filter. Not once have I noticed the adapter loose or leaking any oil. The way the o-ring is on the adapter and the way it fastens into the housing, that o-ring is way up in the housing. I can't see any way it would leak oil even if not totally snugged up. Double check your installation and torque. Double check the o-ring on the adapter. The "drop" of thread locker is maybe a good idea, but it should work perfectly without it.
Oddly enough I had just dealt with my spin on adapter yesterday. At the end of the season last year (late Oct.) when the car was parked for the winter, I had noticed some small drops of oil under the filter in the garage, figured the adapter was lose. I looked into it yesterday and it was definitely tight, but decided to remove and check the o-rings. Sure enough, one of the seals had a long tear in it along the seam, which I'm guessing was the cause of oil seeping out under pressure. I replaced the rubber ring, reinstalled the adapter and torqued to spec, screwed the oil filter on, then started the car back up. As of this morning, not a single drop of oil on the filter, or the floor. Something you may want to look at, hopefully this helps ya.
I've attached a photo.
Thanks for not throwing me under the bus....that prior ownership was me. The thing loosened up on me after a oil change because I probably over tightened the filter on the previous change. So when I removed the filter the adaptor came with it. To make even more sense I must have over torqued the adaptor.
Sorry Scott
First oil change on my LN spin on and the only issue I had was the center fitting that the filter threads on partially backed out as I took the filter off. No big deal, will put a few drops of blue on it next time. That o-ring that failed, it's compression should not be affected by the adapter torque. It is a piston seal type not a flange seal. That failure noes not make sense unless the o-ring material was bad.
