I'm not in the market right now to replace my full exhaust, and I'm still trying to get my eyeballs back in my head after seeing the Porsche factory catalytic converter pricing.

If it wasn't for California, or if I was more open to replacing more of the exhaust, this wouldn't be a big deal.
Run strong and the obdii data still looks very good

Visual (and tailpipe test) shouldn't be a problem.

I would return the DEC considering you are in Cali as it may not pass the visual portion of the emissions test based on what you described.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone,
I received my aftermarket CARB-compliant (CA legal) catalytic converter from DEC this week. At first glance after pulling it out of the box, the cat can itself appears smaller than the Porsche original converters. It's supposed to be a direct-fit replacement, but I haven't held it up to the exhaust yet to see if it looks like it is going to be an easy replacement. My thoughts with it in my hand were that the pipes looked a little narrow, but again, I need to eyeball it in relation to the original pipes and converter to see how it looks.
Does anybody have any actual experience with DEC converters on their car (preferably on a 996)? If so, any feedback much appreciated.
I'm not in the market right now to replace my full exhaust, and I'm still trying to get my eyeballs back in my head after seeing the Porsche factory catalytic converter pricing. I really don't want to negatively affect performance though, so maybe I'll return the DEC and go the OEM/factory route if I can find a cat for a decent price.
Thanks,
-Don
I would return the DEC considering you are in Cali as it may not pass the visual portion of the emissions test based on what you described. If you don't mind a little downtime or are willing to pay for core, another option would be to get the high flow cat retrofit from Gert(Carnewal). I believe Ahsai has these and can comment further or you can do a search and read his older posts.
Lucky for you, the Euro is pretty weak now as well.

Alpine I think the DEC cat is for CA specifically so it comes with the CARB label on it. Visual (and tailpipe test) shouldn't be a problem.

However, I agree with the OP that the DEC pipes look smaller and that's why I passed. I went with Gert instead and you can read my thread here

It's a smoking deal with the weak euro. Gert may even have one ready to ship, and you just need to ship him the cores. I shipped him mine to mod and the cats sat at the Netherland custom for 3 wks due to heavy security! They called Gert and verified if he was expecting a heavy package like this.
My sport cats are still running strong and the OBDII data still looks very good. I'm going to have my 1st smog test on with a test-only station soon. I'll update my thread once I got the smog results.
Hey guys. Thanks for the feedback. Ahsai is right, the DEC cats are CA legal and have the stamp required by the state. It's really the only reason I went with them as they were ok here and I would be assured of passing the visual inspection.
As for sending the current ones to Gert, I guess I could look at that option. The only way that option works though is if he had some in stock already and could ship them ahead as my car is a daily driver and I can't have the downtime. (or at least it would be a big inconvenience)
Part of me also thinks maybe I can hold off on the whole thing as I just changed the plugs this past weekend, and I haven't seen a P0420 and CEL yet, which I had been seeing before. I may have been too quick to pull the trigger on a cat replacement. (probably just wishful thinking though)
If it wasn't for California, or if I was more open to replacing more of the exhaust, this wouldn't be a big deal. The options for CA-legal regular cat replacements are exactly 2 (DEC and Porsche). Supposedly Magnaflow will be doing a direct-fit replacement as well, but no ETA on their offering at yet.
Gotcha, the part I'm having a hard time with is how can they sell these for $450 and still make up the cost in having to have it carb legal certified? I thought carb certification(esp CA) took quite a bit of investment, money wise. With a 5yr/50k warranty, they have to be using some decent form of 300-400 cat element, couple that with labor cost and cost of piping/materials. Wonder what kind of flow it has compared to stock...
