I checked the plastic underbody panels for looseness and all are in place and I believe in place so not to rattle.

Any chance that the flywheel was checked when the clutch was replaced?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hear a rattling noise when the clutch is about to be engaged. It happens at a standstill when I slowly release the pedal to shift to reverse or first. The noise sounds like theres something shaking and loose below and behind the front seats. I checked the plastic underbody panels for looseness and all are in place and I believe in place so not to rattle. It does not happen when I shift from gear to gear normally, unless it is at very low RPM. It happens when the clutch is engaging slowly and at that point the noise begins until I rev the engine. If it were any other car I would automatically think loose motor mounts. The car has 97,000 miles and Im thinking it could be the transmission mount or throwout bearing, but I do not feel anything unusual in the shifter or clutch pedal action. Motor mounts were replaced with Function First polyurethane type and the clutch has about 4000 miles on it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

I'm thinking throwout bearing or clutch disc springs.

POST 3Original post

Any chance that the flywheel was checked when the clutch was replaced? Could be the dual mass portion of the flywheel beginning to go. Just a thought.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you. The noise is best described as clattering and is not heat dependent. It sounds like it comes from something underneath but external. The rattling stops once the revs go up or car gets going.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Discovered the problem. The underbody panel closest to the engine was loose. I placed a section of Dynamat to dampen and then tightened the singular screw. The rattling noise almost disappeared.
