If you're going to deal with all the trouble of inspecting the bearing as you would need to pull it out for inspection then mind as well put a new one in there every time.

Also, did factory warranty replacement engines from Porsche use a single or dual row on 3.4s in 2003?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My dad mailed me a IMS guardian and I just got it today! Maybe it was supposed to arrive on April Fools lol! I will probably just install it next oil change as it is a great warning device from what I have heard. One questions though, my clutch was replaced in December and bearing was supposed to be done too but they said bearing was totally fine. Car has 102k now and engine has about 40k so should I be dropping the transmission once in a while to check it? Obviously this device will be a nice addition to my 996. Also, did factory warranty replacement engines from Porsche use a single or dual row on 3.4s in 2003?

POST 2Original post

Are you saying the shop talked you out of replacing the throwout bearing or the pilot beating? Those bearing are so cheap that there is no real reason not replacing them. The '97 Audi A4 1.8t uses the same throwout bearing as the 996 and they cost $40 on Ebay. I put one in mine when I was fixing my engine 2 years ago. Judging from the way you write, your mechanical knowlwdge and ability is limited, right?

POST 3Original post

Which bearing wasn't replaced? Are you saying you have a new factory motor that was replaced in 2003? You shouldn't be dropping your transmission regularly to check anything unless you are made of money. If you are made of money, you wouldn't have purchased a 996. *#*!$#Endless Loop*$!$!* Sorry, I had to reboot myself. I get off track sometimes. Sounds like your dad is a good one. I have an IMS Guardian installed on my car and it provides me some piece of mind. Easy install and worth it, if it makes you sleep better.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not throwout bearing, I am talking about the IMS bearing. They said it was totally fine. Correct, new motor replaced in 2003 that has roughly 40k right now. Yup, he is a good dad and has a 997 targa 4s but an Automatic ((

POST 5Original post

Imo why do you have to jump and judge people Op i completely understood what you were referring to. If you're going to deal with all the trouble of inspecting the bearing as you would need to pull it out for inspection then mind as well put a new one in there every time. The OE bearing is a pretty cheap part itself.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haha! Thanks for the advice. Yes, I guess I did not word it too clearly. I just drove it 700 miles with my new muffler bypass pipes so guess I am too excited

POST 7Original post

If it's fine, and has made it this far being fine, then keep driving it as it has been driven.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 12174056

I'm sorry, did I offend you? The IMS bearing once removed should not be reinstalled. It takes a lot of force to pull it, the ***** will put dimples into the races and then it's just a matter of time when it will fails. What I would like to know is how did the shop check if the intermediate shaft bearing was OK? Locking the cams and pulling the tensioners takes time, this should be on the final bill.

POST 9Original post

I'm still unclear on exactly what happened to the OP. varsorama, did you actually get the IMS retrofit done or did the tech advise you not to do it and didn't charge you for it? Also sweet gift from your dad. I wish my dad was a car guy too but he isn't. I often end up giving him presents(free brake job, oil change, winter tire swap out, etc). BTW, does your dad have a 997.1 or 997.2? He may want to get himself a guardian too.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haha I do not get offended either Correct, techs said it does not need to be changed as it is fine and did not charge me. They called me to come to the dealer and went over everything. No issue with it at all. After some road trips, it has like 40k on the replacement motor. Now if the replacement motor fails too, I guess the car is just cursed! Oh and yes, a great gift. I bought all the motor oil and we changed it on both our cars over Christmas, as well as air/cabin filters but I don't think that equals out! Valvoline 5w40 is WAY cheaper in Florida than here in Chicago. His is a 2007......warranty just expired last month.
