Before any drilling, I use some masking tape placed down firmly on the paint to avoid and chips or scratches from burrs off the drill.

If the hood is cf or fiberglass, cracking of the hood itself around the latch is likely a result of slamming the hood shut to hook the factory latch anyway...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

someone please give me some step by step guidence so i don't screw up (a photo is worth a 1000 words too )

POST 2Original post

I just HAVE to ask... "Why would you want to put hood pins on a Porsche?"

POST 3Original post

Here's a photo. I'm not sure it is quite worth a thousand words though. Just kidding. I don't have instructions for DIY hood pins. Is this for your new carbon fiber hood?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yep. the hood pins will help with the fitment, plus give me some extra piece of mind.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sure why not. those will do.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

or maybe something like these..they look sturdier and i don't kno if the sparco's are adjustable. i know i have 2 drill 2 holes in the hood but i won't have 2 drill holes in the chassis of the car will I?

POST 8Original post

If you have to drill into the chassis, you better get some extra long pins!! will you be adding a hood scoop also?

POST 9Original post

[QUOTE=Fill]... will you be adding a hood scoop also?[/ QUOTE] ... hood scoop! I LOVE it!!!

POST 10Original post

Hmmm.....like the Toyota 4Runner or Subaru.. Not laughing at you just having fun

POST 11Original post

This one is carbon fiber. Light weight, and durable....

POST 12Original post

dead-eye - you will have to mount the pins at the leading edge of the trunk on the corners - there are two plastic nuts to either side of the rubber bumper recesses

POST 13Original post

Please pardon my ignorance...if you install hood pins do you use them instead of the hood latch or in addition to the hood latch? Also, since our cars have the engine in the rear, what is the point of the hood scoop -- lightweight carbon fiber or otherwise?

POST 14Original post

I think you got caught up in the fun a couple of us deadbeats were having about the hood scoop

POST 15Original post

You use the pins in addition to the latch. The potential major catastrophe/problem is when/if the carbon fiber delaminates and the hood shoots up into your windshield and you can't see sh*t while driving down the highway. It can (obviously) be a very serious problem so any carbon or glass fiber hood should be installed with safety pins, otherwise it shouldn't be installed. There are special drill bits for carbon fiber/plastic that you might want to use. At the very least, tape over both sides of where you plan to drill a hole into the carbon fiber to help prevent cracking. Good luck! --jason

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the help guys, but i think i'll pass on the hood scoop. Now a ROOF scoop on the other hand cupcar #12, thanks i'll check this out 2morro. JasonAndreas: where do i get these drill bits, any hardware store? also, are there any special hood pins for porsches or will any pins work fine?

POST 17Original post

at quick glance they will go through the support rib on hood as well (which is good) and i believe any pins should work the holes might have to be enlarged on the chassis.

POST 18Original post

You have to drill holes in the body at the leading edge and be sure they line up with the holes in the hood. This is really a racing item, no place on the street imo, either the hood or the pins.

POST 19Original post

You need a Type R sticker for the hood scoop. It doubles the power gain

POST 20Original post

Yeah, ROOF scoop! I want one! ...uh, does that mean I won't be able to put my top down any more?

POST 21Original post

I have hood pins on my racecar. I'll try to remember to take a couple of pictures tonight. I think they might be a good idea on a cf hood. As for the ricer label, I'm not sure where you draw the line. Are tips that make it look like you have two exhaust pipes when you can see one coming in the back or 4 inch tips when you have a 2.5 inch exhaust ok but hood pins are not? Beats me. It's your car and your money. Do whatever you want to it. Jim

POST 22Original post

Personally, I would always recommend hood pins for cars that see regular track time. Latches can pop in weird ways...misadjustment, body twist, etc. Sounds goofy, but it happens. Nothing like a hood jumping up at speed! If the hood is cf or fiberglass, cracking of the hood itself around the latch is likely a result of slamming the hood shut to hook the factory latch anyway... I prefer captive pins (the pin slides in the stamped retainer)...Sparco makes some excellent ones that are about $25 a pair. The advantage of a captive pin is that there is no risk in losing the pins. I've heard of hood flying off / flying up because someone shut the hood and left the pins in their pocket. The other style is a small round piece with the catch pin cabled to the rivet. Basically they are pretty simple. I started by anchoring the long pins that get threaded to the car body by finding a flat area in the trunk ahead of the bumper to drill the mounting holes. Once the the treaded rod is mounted, I dropped a dab of paint on the top of it and gently pulled the hood down. Keep the pin threaded down low (so you can almost close the hood). This will transfer the paint mark to the correct spot since the hood obviously swings an arc when it opens. The paint marks the related spot in the hood where I need to drill the through hole for the rod. Use a "step" drill for drilling sheet metal hoods. Once the large hole is through the hood, move to the outside and mark your holes for the retainer portion. Just use some snap rivets to secure it to the hood. Before any drilling, I use some masking tape placed down firmly on the paint to avoid and chips or scratches from burrs off the drill. I'd upload some pics but I'm not a member and they are getting blocked...grrrr...
