Reported cause
Too bad the actor who played him turned out to be a jerk.
Leading evidence: 'jerk' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'jerk' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check idle speed at the end of my next drive' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

And since these cars rarely have lifter issues, I would suspect the following:

Car did not have sooty tailpipes after the test drive or blow any smoke and the oil looked clean on the dipstick.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I previously had a 99 I regretfully sold. Looking at a 99 today with 143k on the clock to buy. I noticed this sound at cold start noticed it was gone when fully warm. Let the car cool off restarted and it was back. This is coming from the passenger side. The car has a check engine light on and is going to the Porsche dealer tomorrow for them to fix what is causing the check engine light. Car did not have sooty tailpipes after the test drive or blow any smoke and the oil looked clean on the dipstick.
I am far from an expert, but that doesn't sound good to me. Mine sounded like that a few years ago and is now in to get the engine rebuilt...
Last recording before it went in:
My opinion...run don't walk...away!
You will notice the cadence of the ticks are exactly of the same timing, just softer. Probably because earlier on in the progression of possible scoring. Just my opinion.

I did I called the salesman told him all about it. He replied its at the Porsche dealer don't worry we will take care of it and its getting a full inspection.
I will update this thread with what he says. He is letting me know the outcome of the dealer visit.
For anyone wondering the car is at Autonation Renton Honda its too bad its an early 99 ocean blue on savannah beige I believe. It has a LSD full power on both seats with lumbar. Its spotless inside and out for the mileage in person its beautiful. They are wanting $13,985 for it.
Great color combo (but I might be biased)!... Low on options, but the LSD is nice. If it's got bore scoring, it's a deal breaker - don't expect the dealer to "take care of it", because they can't unless they're willing to put many thousands of dollars into it (they're not). Run away...
Just got a call from the dealer. So this car has been serviced since new every 10,000 miles at the local Porsche of Bellevue dealer.
They said it needs a new camshaft tensioner and it is a $3,000 repair and will take one week to fix. I told him to make certain they check it for bore scoring before they go ahead with this other repair. I even sent a video of the sound from Jake Raby showing an example and the one the car is making.
Sounds like they are atleast trying to fix it. I will update this on any new news curious what they find out now.
The highlighted part above is yet another warning to run not walk. Plus in my uneducated opinion, changing the camshaft tensioner will NOT eliminate the "ticking" in your audio clip.
RUN...RUN AWAY
Yes I agree this sound will still be there after the camshaft tensioner. Im just curious now to see how long it takes them to figure out this engine is toast.
My hope for this is that they don't screw over a customer and they are the ones who take the hit on the Porsche they took on trade not knowing the issue. Hate seeing someone buy this I think Autonation the largest chain of dealers in our state can afford the hit and not some poor unsuspecting individual on their dream car.
Not sure the Porsche dealer will ever admit the probable bore scoring. After all a Porsche dealer thought it was ok to change the oil and hopefully the filter every 10,000 miles!!
Hello!
Greetings to all as this is my first post. I purchased a 2003 Cab two years ago and so far it has been everything I imaged it would be. After watching the bore scoring series from Raby and listening to some of the sound bites posted in a few bore scoring threads I'm extremely concerned my 996 has the dreaded ticking sound. I'm not a mechanic and do not know much about engines so I'm not sure if I am hearing lifters or something else. In the attached sound clips do you hear anything that might indicate bore scoring? It sounds like I will need to look at the cylinder walls with a scope to know for sure but I am curious if the sounds alone indicates bore scoring. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Hi Mike. Thanks for responding. All clips are taken after vigorous 50 miles drives. The engine sound does not indicate bore scoring? You just made my year. Thanks!
It sounds like there's a lot going in there. It does sound like there's an underlying noise that's rhythmically like a "bore score" type noise. Some of the "double time" overlying/foreground noises sound more like belt tensioners or similar. You could try removing the serpentine belt and starting the car to see if the noise is still there. If it is the tensioners that are noisy, it'll also let you hear the other noise more clearly. If it turns out the tensioners are making noise, replace them. Good luck
Thanks for the feedback. I will take a video this weekend and also try removing the serpentine belt. It looks like something I should be able to do even with my limited skills.
Moosetaco - after listening to the clips of normal engines at idle I would have to say my engine does not sound as good. I guess I mean it sounds looser or rougher, making more clicking or rattling noises but I also cannot quite distinguish a pronounced ticking sound as presented in the #4 video of the Raby series. I also do not see heavy soot at the exhaust although there is some discoloration but maybe that is normal? I will post a picture along with the video. Oil consumption seems to be normal.
Coopduc - I was moving the microphone around quite a bit trying to pick up sounds from different locations. When I take a video this weekend I will take stationary shots at each exhaust pipe. Thanks for pointing that out.
Car has 53K miles.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Place the "microphone" beneath the passenger side of the engine below the exhaust header and record for a good 20 seconds. Don't move it around. "At each exhaust pipe" is not good place to hear engine mechanical sounds. Not sure what I'm hearing, but sounds like an overly fast idle??
Here are videos from the driver's side and passenger's side taken after a 50 mile drive. I didn't have a chance to remove the serpentine belt but it is on the list for next weekend. Does anything captured in the videos indicate bore scoring?
I'm no expert but have been through the bore scoring wringer and know how my car sounded in the various stages. I don't hear an indication of scoring here that my car displayed. Just valve train and injector noise. Maybe someone more intimate with the sounds will have a different observation.
Seriously though how fast does your car idle warmed up such as these videos?
It sound more like lifters. The period/timing of the noises do not sound like bore scoring unless you have several scores bores. But I dont hear that. I do hear a very faint knock, but it could be nothing major. And since these cars rarely have lifter issues, I would suspect the following:
1.) Oil pump pickup is clogged and the valve train is being starved for oil. Drop sump plate for inspection.
2.) Chain rattle is bad and tensioner pads are worn. Drop sump plate and pull oil filter to inspect for worn chain guide material.
3.) Noisy main oil pump or scavenger oil pump
4.) Bad IMSB. Only way to check is to remove it.
5.) Something else
At this point, your best bet is to find an m96 expert, have them use a stethoscope, try to isolate the noise, go from there. If you take the belt off and the noise goes away, you got lucky. Run and drive the car as you did prior to the videos. Then remove belt, check the sound. Only run the engine for 30 seconds without the belt.
Wildbilly32 - Glad to hear nothing stands out to you. Good question, I am not sure what the idle speed is after a drive. At start-up it jumps to about 1.1K or so then drops down to almost 800, which is when I start driving. I'll check the idle speed at the end of my next drive.
Mike - Thanks for taking a listen. I did have a dual row IMSB kit installed about 10K miles ago but maybe there is an issue with the install. I will remove the belt this weekend and if the noise(s) goes away I owe you a six pack. If the noise continues I'll take it in to the shop to review items 1-3 at a minimum and go from there.
It sounds like the consensus is that bore scoring is most likely not the root cause and I need to take it in to the shop for further analysis if the noise continues with the belt removed. I will sleep much better tonight.
Thanks again for the help everyone!
Curious if you could offer me advice. Hope the guy that started the feed sorted things out without a dread BS diagnosis.
The rest of you guys are hilarious and scary at the same time. I'll crowd source my engine sounds too.
After paging through this and panicking, I might as well find out what you think.
If it is bore scoring, how long before everything goes **** up?
Thanks in advance..
You Tube
Im no expert, but I did watch the entire focus on bore scoring series from Jake Raby and the Knowledge Gruppe, sooooo....
All jokes aside, that definitely sounds like bore scoring. Get another video from underneath the passenger side exhaust manifold.
Sorry my friend.
To me bore scoring sounds more blunt, thud like while lifter or other noises sound more high pitched and clicky. I was paranoid myself and ended up taking a bunch of videos myself and it sounds nothing like that.
Put your phone on the ground underneath the header area on the passenger side and give us a good 20 seconds without moving the phone. It doesn't sound good to me...
I agree with JJ your car should be bore scoped. It sounds so very familiar to what my car sounded like at one point...Sorry just my opinion but do have it scoped and let us know.
HI All - Mine is not bore scoring. It is not good. It is a valve train issue.
Working with my local expert to resolve. Might be an engine swap which we have on hand.
Might require R&R for my engine. Either way $6K to $10K to fix.
Why do you say Mine is not bore scoring? Only an invasive bore scope from beneath is definitive. If you havent done that, please dont spend a penny chasing anything else. Bore scope is not expensive
I wish you the best of luck, but this forum has seen this movie before. I wish there was a Milk Duds emoji, i dont like popcorn!!
Or Twizzlers! My favorite movie weakness...I'll eat a whole bag (the big one) in the first hour then have a stomach ache all night and part of the next day. Those things are addicting (only short term though
).
