The 10 degrees actually would make a big difference, but the chart says in the upper right it used the SAE correction factor, and while the correction factor start to fall apparently eventually, 10F is in the range it can correct for quite well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Received an email from PCA, one of the articles is a feature of the IPD plenum. They cover the installation and before/after dyno with HP and Torque results. I know it's a source of debate on if these things actually do anything, but... PCA is saying they do a pretty good job. I've been on the fence about this product but watch and decide for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygzPfE5CcOs&feature=emb_logo

POST 2Original post

Don't really want to sit for 20 min. Is there a text version? Bottom line?

POST 3Original post

I got this email from the PCA as well. I haven't watched the video yet but I have considered installing this plenum in the past, however, my guess is that it has little to no effect on seat of the pants performance. IIRC, actual dyno results posted by RLers in the past have shown little to no real HP or torque gains. I wonder if IPD (which I'm sure is a PCA advertiser/sponsor) paid extra for this "publicity". I'll watch the video sometime if I get a few minutes but I'd also rather just see the Cliffs Notes version.

POST 5Original post

I watched the video. **Full disclosure: I have the IPD competition plenum mated to the GT3 TB. I also have a FSI 3.8 stage II Engine. The only positive difference I can attest to is that my fuel mileage went from around 19 mpg average to 23 average - mix of highway/around town driving. The power is very smooth and torquey - 3-5k rpm almost feels like turbo boost the way it comes on (Ive had more than 1 passenger and driver tell me this). Obviously, this has most to do with the motor itself, but the IPD/TB made a nice, well balanced edition... ymmv 😉

POST 6Original post

No AFR data. The fact they went through all the effort to do the install on a dyno with before and after without logging the AFR change is strange.

POST 7Original post

I also have the IPD Comp w/GT3 T, as well as some other modifications. Some good takeaways from the conversation while reviewing the graphs. In the past when I have posted my dyno results, I pointed out the increase of torque in the widening power band, the rpm range we normally drive in. Naysayers, will say nay, that's fine. The dyno graph speaks volumes

POST 8Original post

Good video from PCA, but I think this proves that lots of these aftermarket add-ons, like so called cold air intakes, produce marginal results.

POST 9Original post

I noticed the IPD plenum used in this video has holes drilled in de v-shaped flow divider in the T-section. The plenum I installed on my car has an undrilled c-shape divider as shown in the pictures below. It seems IPD is still improving its design.

POST 10Original post

Save your money people and spend it on something where you can actually feel the difference like better tires.

POST 11Original post

A 20Nm torque increase midrange you maybe should be able to notice. Instead of tires I would rather say you save for some lightweight 17 or 18 inch wheels. Lower the unsprung mass and the rotational inertia is much more noticeable.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16354630

One of the things they point out about this chart is the torque and HP being smoothed out around 5-6k RPM. Which you can see in the chart. They also say it's not necessarily about peak HP gains, but gains throughout the rev range. I'm repeating what the've said, not endorsing it or confirming anything. I'm sure there was some element of "Sponsorship" with IPD, but at the same time PCA is a somewhat trusted source.

POST 13Original post

It is the same for any tune of the ECU for our cars. Its not the peak performance which matters but the torque which is significantly improved and optimized over a useable powerband. 10-20% increases in the mid rev ranges are definitely having an effect.

They make a bunch of different plenums depending on displacement and TB size. This isn't to say that they're not refining their designs, just the there are many different iterations of intake plenums...

POST 15Original post

The top is for a cable throttle car (MY99) and has the additional holes. To my knowledge, the e-gas cars do not have the additional holes in the "V".

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16355646

Why the need for the holes for a cable throttle?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 16355671

I have absolutely no idea. I'm pretty sure that if you reach out to IPD, they would answer that for you.

POST 18Original post

It was an entertaining vid. They said the car was stock but it had a red silicon hose from the air filter box so not totally stock! They broke the dreaded plastic water hose attachment and did the brass fitting hack and said he might order a new one in the future. Hopefully he means the aluminum version and not the crappy plastic one, again.

POST 19Original post

It would have been nice to graph MAF, AFR, IAT and Timing along with the torque/power graphs. I know that's too much to ask. That said, looks to be definitive to me. I had one of the VERY early designed ones that came on a core engine I bought for parts. A friend of mine eyeballed it and wanted it for his 3.4 to 3.8 build so I gave it to him. I don't care about power gains anymore, I just want durability so I can beat on it forever without worry.

POST 20Original post

I knew that somehow they were going to break that little plastic water hose fitting. Having said that, I better go order a replacement for my car since i have now just jinxed myself!

POST 24Original post

Have used the aluminium URO one well worth it IMO My 996 came with an IPD plenum so I dont have a baseline but I wouldn't want to remove it.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 16356792

Cool. What is it listed under and where did you source it?

POST 26Original post

I am not an expert in these things, but the air temp for the second run was 10 degrees cooler, and the atmospheric air pressure was slightly higher. Would that account for the extra power/torque? If you look at the video, there are measurements for temp (I believe in degrees C and pressure in mm Hg) I have assumed that was ambient air measurements.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 16357154

The 10 degrees actually would make a big difference, but the chart says in the upper right it used the SAE correction factor, and while the correction factor start to fall apparently eventually, 10F is in the range it can correct for quite well. I see now you said 10C... Eh i still think the correction factor should be fairly reliable.

Has anyone completed this upgrade? im considering it for a 1999 996 track car.

Do you mean the IPD Intake Plenum & GT3 Throttle body? Or, the little plastic hose connector that seems to have taken over this thread?

Not unless you break it - but there's a good chance you will, as it's very close to that area and they get very brittle over time.
