My 99 C2 tip isnt regularly shifting from 4th to 5th gear in automatic mode. When I switch to manual, it shifts perfectly and then I can switch back to automatic in 5th gear and it stays there without a problem. This trouble is new to my car, has anyone had a similar experience? What is the likely problem?

Did you change the ATF lately? What mileage is your 996? High mileage automatic often fail when ATF is changed due to change in viscosity. This can be remedied by putting in some CD-2 ATF conditioner that will help seals to expand and thus upshift as normal. You may want to try this even if the ATF wasn't changed. You may also have something stuck in the slushbox so changing ATF and filter (if not done already), may help. If all else fails, take it to a Porsche specialist for diagnosis.
