However, I love buying used things from said folks since most of the time, my expectations are met or exceeded.

Someone will admit they are really not comfortable using air freshener in their car because they are not a mechanic, and when the same situation happened to them, they took the car to a professional detailer and gladly paid him $1,000 to have it aired out correctly.

I found a car i want with a Aero Package on it with a bunch of options that not sure i need......the owner is basing the price because of low miles and highly optioned and being one owner. Frank
I like the car and it has the aero kit and the rear spoiler. only has 25k miles and one owner. The owner wants $34k and it has not had the ims/rms done. I think this price would be at the upper end for a 2000, there are cars with out Aero kits out there with asking prices in the $20s. Frank
Lots of options for sure but the Aerokit was not part of the original build. The option code for that is XAA. It was added on later but that should be a deal breaker. Look at the underside of the rear deck lid. If looks like this with a "Made in France" it is OEM.
EDIT.....I'm blind....the code is listed.
If you think it's too much, don't buy it. If it checks out and you really like the car... Buy it. Don't sweat over a few thousand dollars if it's your dream car.
Not my dream car, but for a 996 I love it. I really would like a white one but they are hard to find.......2nd would be yellow and 3rd red. My issue at this time is the ims has not been done and I really belive the 1st number in the sale price should be a 2 or am I off on the market? I live in So Califorina and the car is a local one owner car. Frank
I am on a trip so doing this from my cell phone and looking up all the codes has not been a option yet. But looking at the option sticker i see what the owner means by it having alot of options.......my real question is what are all the options and if they are worth a higher sale price on a used 2000 996? Frank
Mostly COSMETIC options, with the aerokit the most pricey

This link clearly lists almost all if not all of the option codes:
https://www.stuttcars.com/technical/option-codes/996/
I looked a bunch of them up for you. Xenons, Aerokit, Sport Seats, CD changer, Full Leather (seems like it anyway), CD binnacle thingy etc. I did not look all of them up so there may be some other gems.
Note that the leather interior itself is covering several of the codes (i.e. there is one for the dashboard, another for the air venta, and so on, not just one for "full leather". 3 spoke steering wheel is another option, two of the codes are for the sport seats (one for left, one for right), another for leather rear seats. One code is an "internal code regarding tire selection", i.e. every car will have a code there showing the worker which tires to put on the car. I'm not sure what the minimum amount of codes are that there HAVE to be just be default (10? 12? not sure). Remember it's not always just extra cost options, some of them would show to put in the "standard" feature in some cars.
I guess my point is that there may be a lot of codes, but that A) doesn't mean that there are necessarily that many options (3 codes to cover the two front seats and the rear seats for example) and B) some of them are pretty worthless (the CD binnacle thing?)
There are some nice options, but besides the Aerokit many if not most are fairly easily findable (or pretty much standard) in a newer 996, even a C4S at that price. It might be a good idea to sit down and decipher all the codes and then decide if it's worth it. The price seems very high to me, but it's not my money. While no 996 is going up in value anytime soon, the higher you buy, the more room to fall it has. Low miles are in theory nice, but there are plenty of really immaculate higher mileage cars out there as well. That's my opinion anyway, but hey, if you buy it and post a pic I will be the first to congratulate you, it sounds like a nice car!
Ya and the aero kit is more for "look at me attention " and ruins the beautiful lines of the. 996.
( my opinion )
Get a 996 that someone's already spent a bunch of money on so you don't have too.
I would think $25k tops. I love my '99 Aero, and it's got lots of options also (my guess is that most Aeros were heavily optioned). But, I paid $18,000 for it a little over a year ago, and would be happy to get $17,000 for it now. Admittedly, mine has way more miles, but I think the owner is mistakenly overvaluing the low miles. Nobody is going to pay anywhere near $34k for a Mk I, so it's going to sit. Let him know you are seriously interested at whatever your top dollar is, and to call you if he wants to sell at that price. Be sure to show him you are a serious buyer - letting a seller know you've got cash now and can close immediately is a huge plus. Then be sure to let him know that while he's trying to get his price, you and your cash will be looking at other cars, so you may be out of the market at any time. Be nice about it, of course - nobody likes being told their car is worth only 2/3 of what they think it is. It may simply be that the market needs to beat him up a little and soften him up for you. If the car is gorgeous, let him know that too - don't be afraid to brag on the car and let him know how much you'd appreciate the chance to own it. If he is sentimental about the car, that will make a difference.
One last thing might be for you to print out some ads for Turbos and C4Ss selling at or below that price ($34k) along with some Mk I ads selling in the mid teens to show him(leave them with him). Keep in mind that some sellers are just unrealistic, and that there are plenty of sellers that do have theirs priced to sell. If you posted an ad saying you were willing to pay $25k for a Mk I Aero, you'd be inundated with calls.
Agreed. OP - for reference, that's more that what I paid for my 40AE with 35k miles. As part of the sale, the seller also put in a new clutch kit, AOS, serpentine belt, pulleys, etc.
It sounds like a nice car, but there are plenty of 996s for sale out there. He's creeping into 997 territory at that price.
My '99 aero car stickered at $99,550. LOTS of options...
I bought it w/ 81k miles last winter for $19k.
I'd have paid a few more thousand, but not more than that. There are a lot of 996's out there...
I agree that $34k sounds much too steep. Upper $20's at the most for a Mk1. And as everyone on these forums is aware extreme low mileage is not always a "good" thing.
That is what I was looking for 1st and still looking, I let a 31k mile one with only 2 owners that was mint get away and I could of paid $30k for it. Frank
Keep looking. I just picked up an 02 with lots of options and 37k on the odometer for 26k. Looks brand new. They are out there. I passed on an 03 with 45k because they wanted too much (27,500) and it didn't have PSC.
Keep looking buddy. I have been lurking the internet and this forum for the past 6 months and havent found the one. For that price you can get a 993 cabriolet currently in the classified section or a 997.
I still can't find a local aero car local to me. They are either junk or way over price. There is a 02 or 03 on ebay that is white asking $35k but not sure if that is a fair price I am thinking high $20s from what I here from this board. Frank

Here is the 2003 on ebay.
What is the difference from the 2000 mk1 to this 2003 mk2? What is a more desirable year? Frank
That is 997S pricing. Looks nice but questions I would have are......why does the underside of the rear decklid not have the typical Mobil1 sticker among others? With all the pics why not a pic of the option sticker in the frunk? Main diff from MK1 to MK2 is more HP and a glove box.
Hey dabank, $200 will get you a one-way ticket on Southwest to almost anywhere in the US. You can fly out to pick up a car and spend a couple of days driving it home. It's a great way to get the exact car you want plus have a great experience getting to know the car.
If I'm not mistaken, all 996's are designed to pass CARB inspections, so you don't really need to buy a California car (you California guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I read that somewhere in Cuda's Fabspeed thread). You'll want to get a PPI done on whatever car you are going to buy, whether it's local or not, so just ask for a recommendation on here for a shop local to the seller. Also, fellow Rennlisters in the seller's area will gladly go take a look at the car in person for you (called a "Rennfax" - a play on "Carfax").
I think Sneaky Pete would make you a helluva deal on an extremely nice '99 C4 aero with lots of good mods. He's in Indiana, so figure a 3-day drive. When you drive back home, go through Kansas City, I'll even give you a free pass and a guided tour of the Kansas City Automotive Museum. Since two of our 8 board members drive 996's, anybody who shows up in a 996 gets free admission to the museum.
Clean the aftermarket intake as your probably sucking in dirty air. The rear deck/spoiler is either aftermarket or heavily modified.
Based on the condition of the intake, you probably need to flush all fluids at the least considering it only has 17k and PO probably didn't do a thing to it.
Watch out for D Chunking and Porous cylinder heads. Check tire date of manufacture and replace if warranted.
Other than that, great find on a mk1 aero.
Would you keep the intake or put a stock unit back on? The upgrades i am told have only been on 5kmiles. The tires are from 2009 so it needs new ones.I was told this is a factory aero car......what looks wrong with the wing? Frank
I think it's a little late to be asking questions. The taco wing doesn't look correct. I think you are in for another 7-8k for tires, wheels and IMS if you choose to do so. Low mile 15 year old cars need things fast once you start to drive them.
dabank, best thing I can suggest is have a PPI (POST Purchase Inspection) done soonest (I am guessing a PRE Purchase Inspection was not done).
Get the car up to snuff and

I know it is a little late but I don't get the car till Tuesday and just what to make sure it is what the seller says it is. I know own mile cars will need some stuff but at least then I know when/where it was done and have a new starting date to base future service from.Seller seems to think the car should have sold for a lot more money so his attuide seems to be the car is perfect and if it not what I think I don't have to buy it. This is why I am asking here if the car looks/sounds good? Thanks again,Frank
IMHO, yes it looks very sharp in pictures (cosmetic/aesthetics). Good to know seller is giving you an "OUT" if car does not meet your expectations/it is not as listed/advertised. Personally, the health of the engine is more important to me vs. looks. Have you already ran Carfax/Autocheck, etc.?
Are you planning to have the car inspected before finalizing the sale?
I would ask the owner if he still has the factory wheels and intake. But you will not be able to put on any factory US m96 intake.
Is the owner in the military or European by chance? The deck lid could be from a Euro spec mk1 gt3 possibly. If it has "made in France" engraving on the underside, it most likely is OEM.
Wheels are Speedline and matches more on a 964/993 model IMO.
Here is a shot of a US aero deck lid for comparison.
The more I think of it the wing is from a GT3. The difference between that and the usual Aerokit is the GT3 breathes on the right side. On my phone I can't attach a pic but do a google for GT3 engine bay. So it looks like car is not a original Aero. Still looks nice though.
What markings would tell me if this is a factory GT3 wing? I thought a Aero kit and the GT3 where the same? Is it just the rear wing that is different or are the side skirts and front bumper different on a GT3?
From the outside the wings are the same. But the function of one to the other are different. On reg 996 the air intake is on the left....it's on the right for GT3's. The front bumper and skirts are the same. Looks to me the kit was added at a later date. Like Alp said if you get rid the current air intake and go back to stock the deck lid won't work with a stock system. Might not be a big deal if you are ok with but could be an issue for resale. Also notice the gurney lip is painted black...usually they are painted the body color.
The gurney lip is a little trim piece mounted across the top of the bottom wing. Driver Dan Gurney added it years ago to his race cars and the name stuck. It provides a little more aerodynamics but you only realize it add speeds say over 100+.
Thank you sneaky Pete.
Looking at the the truck pictures seems like the spare tire mounting parts are missing and a light? Do you see anything else off on this area? i am looking at everything real close now because of this wing issue......not sure i am to excited that this is not factory and things had to be modify to fit....also means the wing has been painted. I knew it had the air intake and the exhaust, i am fine the the exhaust but is was going to sell/trade the intake for a stock one and know it seems i would have no choice but to keep it?
You are correct...the spare should be upright and have a cover on it. Something isn't adding with a car with 17k miles on it.
I know where you can get a real aero
!
Yes your car is real nice,I just do not what that many miles....I did not want a car with this low of 17k either more like 30k to 40k.
On Tuesday I will know if car is as advertised .
I just wish I knew what options the car came with so I know it has what I was told.
hard for me to tell in pictures if it is full leather,I see the 3 spoke wheel and sport seats? Aero package (not sure if factory) and not to sure what else to look at/for? Frank
Not tooting my own horn but.......high miles on a well maintained car are just numbers. With a good suspension and new motor cars like mine have already paid for the big ticket items. But I really do understand your side.
Hope this one all works out for you.
Ask the owner to take a pic of the option sticker under the frunk lid. This will tell you at least if all the major stuff came from the factory or not. Some options could've also been dealer installed.
Upon closer inspection, that car does have a real OEM Euro spec GT3 rear deck lid. The owner either is in the military, European, and/or knows people in Europe to get something like that considering they never sold any mk1 GT3 cars here.
With 28 records on file, have you ran the autocheck report on it? It just seems on the high side for a low mileage car.
It is a 2 owner and most records are smogs in California every 2 years, at one smog miles where wrote wrong that said 11k miles when it had 16k and he has proof and has paperwork started to correct it. He bought car used with 5k miles in 2001 and has done nothing to but serviced it a few times. He sent me a picture of th wing. There is no option sticker under hood and he said he bought it like that. Frank
Looks factory...is it from a MK1 Gt3?
Frank - you're car is fine. It's a 15 year old car and you have less than $20k in one of the nicest looking cars ever made. Quit worrying. No one has taken a Volkswagen Beetle and turned it into a 996 aerocar and scammed you on eBay.
I've been driving Porsches for 30 years, and I've found P-car owners are sometimes the biggest bunch of OCD, worry about everything people I've ever met.
Post this - "Oh my God, my wife farted in my car on the way home from dinner last night. I've used $200 worth of special leather cleaner and air fresheners to make sure the car doesn't stink, but I'm afraid she's ruined the value of the car.", and you'll get 10 pages of tongue-clucking, suggestions on why your $200 cleaners are worthless and what $500 cleaners and air fresheners you should have used, why you should never allow you wife in your car, and discussions on how to change her diet so she doesn't fart. Someone will admit they are really not comfortable using air freshener in their car because they are not a mechanic, and when the same situation happened to them, they took the car to a professional detailer and gladly paid him $1,000 to have it aired out correctly. You'll be critiqued, she'll be critiqued, and someone will suggest that if you'd have just bought a cabriolet, you'd have had the top down and would have never noticed her fart. Then, 5 years from now, you'll go to sell the car, and someone will pull up the thread on Rennlist and try to lowball you $5,000 because your now 20 year old car has been farted in, and they have proof from an old Rennlist thread showing you abused the car, And by-the-way, the pictures you posted from the day she farted in the car show that your wife's ***** are not real and are indeed aftermarket, and that she dyes her hair and she's really not a blonde, she's a brunette, and if you'd have done a PPI on her before you were married you'd have discovered all these terrible things about her and that she has a history of farting after eating Mexican food.
Edit - Oh yeah, and at least 2 guys will PM you and ask to buy either the car, your wife, or both...
So - here's my suggestion... Enjoy the hell out of the car. You've purchased a nice, well optioned, low mileage 996 for less than $20k. Fix a few things that aren't perfect on a 15 year old car. If the IMS issue bugs you, get it changed and figure it's just part on maintaining a 15 year old car. And if you wife ever farts in the car, wait until you get home and give her one back under the blanket after you go to bed that night.
Enjoy your new car, take your wife our for dinner (not Mexican food), a drive, and have fun.
Rick
+996 (FWIW, been trying to tell him this 2 pages ago). Frank, pay to have a POSTpurchase Inspection done to give you some peace of mind/mitigate buyer's remorse.
Since the seller is giving you an OUT of this deal, you can choose to cancel this purchase and start over:
* find car
* ask questions BEFORE purchase
* have inspection done BEFORE purchase
* BUY and enjoy car.
But if you decide to keep this car, take a gander at these to help you size up the car BEFORE finalizing the sale:

Looked at car tonight. Did not buy car, was not a factory aero, car was repainted and been wrecked in the front. The search continues for a factory aero car. There is a 2003 white aero on ebay that they want $36k and I think that is way to high....I made a offer last week of $28k and it was turned down.
