It looks like the engine was untouched and coolant tank replaced (looks all white and not yellowish).

I went with the "other" good shop I found in interviews because the current owner had used Imola, and I regret that decision; it was a disaster I'd rather not go into.

For me, they are a continuation of early duck tail spoilers, whale tail spoilers and the later iterations of spoilers the factory used on their racing cars.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone,
sorry for all the posts... the search for my first 911 is a bit overwhelming.
I'd like an opinion on this car:
1999 996. Looks like an Aero (not sure if kit or factory)
90,000 miles (I don't mind high mileage, usually)
Black exterior / Black interior
Sport seats (drivers leather separated from plastic back)
HID lights
$18,995
Thoughts...?
is the rear Aero spoiler supposed to be adjustable? Looks like it is tilted up (like an aileron)...
Priced about right. Looks like factory aero. Post a pic of the white options sticker under the hood and we'll tell you for sure. Look for option code XAA which is factory aero.
As for overall, that is a gorgeous car - but I might be a bit biased.
I also found another Aero, but this one has 105k miles... and is up north in a cold climate (the black one is in the south).
This one is silver, but the seller stated the color is "Mirage Metallic" and the color will shift. Is this like a pearlescent type color? Or similar but not so cheap looking?
Seat is split/torn on the black one.
2nd car needs more pictures.
Also, get the options sticker pictures for both cars to make comparison more objective.
+1.
Black looks like a non-factory aero car.
Silver car has a Navi (+/-), being a 99 car it has the crappiest navigation available. PCM 1 8 bit. Interior looks better on the silver car IMO and that color looks very unique. Silver car also has an upgraded 3 spoke steering wheel.
PCM 1 is the name of the navigation system on the 99-02 models. 99 comes with 8 bit interface, and it is not up-gradable. Unless you are a sucker for keeping the car factory original, you will want to replace the navigation unit with something more modern.
FWIW, Mirage Metallic is really more of a beige than a true silver.
In some light it looks very silver-like, while in other light it appears very metallic beige.
It's an interesting color, but might be a bit polarizing for resale.
Also FWIW, I like the Mirage car better than the black.
Black one
- Sports Seats
- HID lights
- Non factory wheels (997 turbo?)
- SS door jams
- 4 spoke steering wheel (ugly imo)
Pearl One
- Sports Seats
- Headlight Washers
- Factory Aero Kit (IMO)
- GT3 Wheels (standard on some aero's)
- GT Rear Bumper Trim's
- Traction Control (see button, rare option, it might have LSD, option available only for 99 carreras)
- Rare color (for aero)
- 3 spoke steering wheel
I would get the Pearl one and put black rims on it. It looks like the engine was untouched and coolant tank replaced (looks all white and not yellowish). If you decide to get any of these, ensure you do a PPI.
The Mirage Metallic car gets my vote. It's very original looking w/ a ton of options. Rare color, full aero package w/ the trims, GT3 wheels..
Nice car. Yummy...
What is it that makes some of you think the black one isn't an OEM aerokit?
No question the front, rockers, and wing are the OEM parts. It's missing the winglets on the rear bumper which I will grant could indicate it was done after the fact, but that's no reason to ding it in my opinion.
I think its because all factory Aero's came with the 3 spoke steering wheel? I could be wrong. The kit looks factory added though (no cheap fiberglass).
I can guaranty you that they did not
I remember she specifically wanted the 4 spoke because she didn't like the 3s (neither do I actually). Can't remember if it was standard or an option/deletion though.
Edit: Just pulled out the sticker and build sheet. It was covered by X26 (special leather steering wheel).
What's the consensus on FACTORY Aero kits? Do they look sleazy / poseur? Do they kill the value of the car?
Personally... I like the look, but fear that it may appear it's ostentatious. But, I'm in Florida... so pretty common to see exotic cars everywhere.
And, long term wise... would a 996.1 with a Factory Aero Kit be more "rare" and perhaps desirable, in 20 years, etc?
Being as I own an aerokit car, I think they are pretty sweet looking. The early aerokit (taco spoiler) is the same look on the first GT3 cars that were released in Europe and not stateside.
For me, they are a continuation of early duck tail spoilers, whale tail spoilers and the later iterations of spoilers the factory used on their racing cars.
Some guys don't like the aerokit. Some guys don't like big, round, firm *****. Their loss to both...
Personally I think the MkI aerokit looks the best and I actually find 911s without any aerokit look unfinished. Those opinions are likely heavily biased by looking at our car for 13 years though
As far as value, it seems to me that Aero cars carry a premium over non-Aero cars.
I think it is similar to the color of the second car you found though. Some will like it and some won't, but all that matters is if you like it or not.
^^^^ LOL to the boob comment.
It's up to your personal taste but there are far fewer Aero cars around possibly making them more desirable amongst a certain type of crowd.
As for OEM, the front bumper and sideskirts along with rear trim should all by polyurethane. There were no aftermarket manufacturers of these in polyurethane stateside for MK1. The factory rear "taco" decklid with wing was made from fiberglass from the factory. The OEM one will have a "Made in France" molded into the underside of the deck for authenticity.
Prefer the silver over the black one. I don't like the turbo wheel on the black one. But keep looking there are plenty out there.
Hard to tell, but is the black one a sunroof deleted car?. If so that is super duper rare.
Ok guys... thinking of putting an offer in on the silver colored car. It had its clutch replaced at 69k miles (car has 105k miles now). IMSB has never been touched. Also, car has LSD (and an "electronic LSD" as well - not sure what that means).
Thoughts on an offer....?
Not sure what Krom means by "only" in his comment. Looks like a very nicely optioned car. Be sure to have a PPI completed. What's the seller asking for it?
[If you buy the car, be SURE to post a new IMSB thread. I believe that it is required for all new members].
Seller is asking $19,500... which I think is rather high for the mileage. I saw two other members here who just bought 1999 Aero's, both with about 75k miles, for about $17k... but no GT3 rims, and no "full leather"...
I'd welcome opinions of what would be a "fair" price for this one...
Best answer I can give you is based on my own experience: narrowed my search to '02-up 996 cab, tip, <70K miles, aero, silver. Surfed ebay, forums, craigslist, etc. and finally decided to check out the "top 3" candidates.
My search/hunt quickly ended after I laid eyes on my #1 pick, knew right there and then that it was THE ONE. Decided to skip the other two.
In other words, if this car has "MOST" of what you're looking for, GIT R DONE.
Cuda, OP is jazzed about buying his first P-car and based on his threads, has been "vacillating" to say the least....may just be the excitement fueling his frenzy.
But I do agree that this car has a healthy options list.
Hence, my advice to buy it ONLY if this is THE ONE for him
MBA-SAILOR: location influences the market as you already know (for example, everything is more expensive here in California
). so the OTHER cars that sold for less may not be reliable reference points for you (not to mention many other variables in the selling price for those cars).
Probably a bit high, in my opinion. But considering the options, not a rip-off by any means.
I'd offer him about 17.5k and work up from there, maybe settle at 18.5. It's a tough market for sellers these days, since there are so many 996s on the market.
Try and use the lack of IMSB replacement as a bargaining chip.
Ah, that's what I figured you meant, Krom, after pondering your comment some more. When I bought my 996, it was the first car I looked at! But, I looked at a TON of 914s before I found "the one."
I paid $19k last fall for my '99 C4 w/ aerokit with 81k miles. The sticker price was $99,500, so it had a few more options. It did not have the GT3 wheel or full leather (it does have the Boxster Red, which IIRC was ~$3,600).
If you like the car and it checks good w/ a PPI, grab it.
Who really gives a sheet if it's $1,000 or so higher and has 10,000 more miles than someone else thinks it's worth? If $1,000 is gonna break someone who's driving and owning a 996, then they are over their head to begin with.
Grab it - at $19.5k it's a unique car that even in the middle of a gaggle of 996 cars would still be unique.
LOL Red yes, you raise a valid point... but I do fixate on price and not over paying... I think I was born to negotiate / bargain, and I sometimes need to stop my self from haggling over a few dollars... it's a bad habit, but it's in my blood lol.
That being said... anyone know how I can find a shop for a PPI in Minnesota?
I'll have to remember to check our sticker in the morning, but as I recall the full leather cost more than that (I want to say like 7k). There was a leather option between the cheap plastic interior and the "herd o cows" and it seems to me thats what we have here. Could be wrong though.
Still a nice car and a good price if you like the color. Just make sure you know exactly what it is you are getting.
Here's your answer: that car is worth exactly $18,500. Not a penny more, not a penny less. If he wants $18,501, you walk. If you pay $18,499, you ripped him off and are driving down the price of all 996s. There - now you have your answer. Go forth and conquer - vini, vidi, vici!
Ok I was sorta wrong about the leather. On my 01 sticker I have a "full leather interior" option for $3215 like that sticker. I also have a $4890 "full leather package" option too as well as the previously mentioned "special leather" steering wheel for $1310.
And yes, we do have the rare and coveted "Delete sunroof" option
The number of cows sacrificed
It's been 14 years since we ordered it so I don't remember the details, but everything is leather in ours. The things I know for sure are:
Backs of the seats are leather.
Vent slats are leather
Side seat trim and power controls are leather.
Steering column.
From the pics of the "silver" car it looks like more of the dash is covered (the areas around the side vents).
I also know our alcantara roof was an upgrade over the perforated plastic, but I don't know if that was just part of the full leather or the package.
Near Minneapolis I would recommend Imola Motorsports for PPI. I interviewed 3 shops when I bought my '02 in late 2012 from a Minneapolis owner and Imola was excellent. I went with the "other" good shop I found in interviews because the current owner had used Imola, and I regret that decision; it was a disaster I'd rather not go into. Nice people, utterly incompetent.
Also I would frame the purchase as follows: the entire value of the car is in the engine. Make sure the engine is in absolute top shape for $19k on a 100k mile '99, and spend the money on an absolutely thorough PPI. If there is any metal whatsoever, of any type or size, in the oil housing or filter, walk away, period. There are other points to ensure as well which a good shop should be able to do and be prepared to negotiate.
The outside skin should of course be pleasing to you, but the money you are spending should be determined by the engine's condition and nothing else. If you get an aero kit and full leather and all that thrown in, great.
I have full leather on my factory Aero - dash, doors, console, brake and supple leather on the seats. One thing about members on Rennlist, they will always try to lowball someone on a car.
Hi everyone, car checked out OK per a fellow Rennlister. Made an offer on the car... $17k (asking was $19.5k) and the seller accepted my first offer about an hour later. Which makes me worried... maybe I should of offered less? :-O
If he accepted $17k even after you won the initial bid at $19.5k, I'd be worried that there is something wrong with the car. Either that or he's a desperate addict that needs quick cash for his next fix. In the 5 years I've been keeping tabs on the used 996 market, I've never seen a sub 20k mileage 996 go for under 20k. That's not to say there isn't any out there.
Hi Alpine, it wasn't an auction, it was a cars.com listing. The car is a 1999 with an OEM aero kit, Paladio color (light gold color) with 105k miles. The seller took a new job and is moving half way across the country...
Spoke to the mechanic which has worked on this car. Only problem he knows of is that the AOS is leaking a bit, dripping oil.
How bad a problem is AOS? Would it be bad to drive the car 2,000 miles back to Florida with a bad AOS? Is AOS something I can do myself? What is the cost for this fix?
Thanks guys!
