I guess I should do some extended testing with the roof up to see if the noise is objectionable.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everybody, trying do decide whether or not to pull the trigger on buying an 05 turbo s cab. The car is in fairly pristine condition, only has 6500 miles on it, the asking price is around $70k.
The main issue is it is a cabriolet and I live in the Pacific North West where 9 months of the year the weather isn't exactly convertible friendly. I love everything about the car except for it's lack of a solid roof.
The question is should I compromise on the roof issue to get a beautiful low mileage car? Is the driving experience compromised at all by driving with the top up? The car has no hard top. I know it's a personal decision, just looking for opinios.
Personally I would not buy a cab, they don't look as nice. Your gonna get wind noise and the whole car is not as strucherly sound.
Some turbos on the Vancouver Craigslist if your into importing
If that's the only issue, I'd go for it. The nice thing is even if you put the hard top on you will have power rear windows. That is a nice touch. I rarely put my top down as the open air form no windows on the sides was enough for me. People are always looking to dump their tops for pennies so you will have no trouble finding one cheap. And if you want to keep the soft top, you can just weather treat it every 6 months and not have to worry about the weather effects.
^agree with Sanyata that's a fair bit of coin on a 9 year old car; to feel the need to compromise. Have you thought of GT2 996 at all? If I recall they are about the 70k mark (I assume in a few years a large appreciation curve will hit it; my opinion) and you can probably find one with comparable miles
Thanks for the input.
I guess I should do some extended testing with the roof up to see if the noise is objectionable. I assume the hard top would alleviate much of the noise issues. I've priced new hard tops and they seem rather pricey. Can't see plunking down 70k then paying 5k on a top. Of course I haven't looked for any second hand, wonder how difficult it is to find one in matching color.
Might do a bit more pondering. Originally I was going to buy a new Cayman s then a Cayman gts. Just recently started looking at previously owned 911s. I figure if I buy used might as well get a little more power and performance.
I've not looked at any cars north of the border. I've seen quite a few going north though.
I guess more test driving and looking around are in order.
Thanks for the replies.
I have had two cabs and bought matching hardtops for both for under 500 each. The car is very quit with the tops on. The three months will make buying the cab worthwhile.
You need to spend a little time sourcing the hardtop in the right color at the right price. Search tempest is the best source.
I am selling my 04 cab in the classifieds. No stories in perfect condition with 42000 miles.
Veggantilles; drove a Cayman & Boxster GTS at the Porshce World Roadshow, the Cayman is superb, I didn't have one gripe about it (other than not enough seat time). It is a car that just puts a big grin on your face; very quick too and good power to weight ratio.
A video on youtube, I think EVO or x-car did a track test between a 996 GT3 and the Cayman GTS, the end result, they are about a dead heat.
Kind of decided to go the used route to avoid the depreciation hit. I assume that barring any unforeseen calamities that I could drive 996 for a three or four years and sell or trade in without much of a hit. Maybe find a cpo cayman gts or a newer turbo s.
Of course in three or four years the nine year old car with 6500 miles will be a 13 year old car with around 25,000 miles (barring any unforeseen circumstances), not sure if my scheme will pan out.
Trying to attach a pic of the turbo s.
The dealership was originally asking for $82k, May have talked them down to 70k. They say it has had all of its yearly maintenance visits.
"Is the driving experience compromised at all by driving with the top up?"
I much prefer driving with the top-down on mine versus top up. Top-up I find it harder to see who's around me when I'm backing up.
Noise-wise it's definitely quieter with the top up.
