Your slow start issue is a classic bad starter issue with these cars.
Leading evidence: 'classic bad starter issue' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'classic bad starter issue' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine and didn’t see anything grossly wrong' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Afterwards I checked the engine and didn’t see anything grossly wrong, and then attempted to start the car again.

I replaced ignition switch at about 95k or 3 years
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

few weeks ago the idle was a bit rough for a couple minutes then went back to normal and no further rough spells (until today)
Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks for looking at this.
I suspect this is an electrical problem which is not in my strong suit of do it yourself repairs. AnyWho, here’s how it goes:
I was driving home from work in 100 degree weather. I’d been driving on a highway at about 65 miles an hour without any problem for about 15 minutes. I came to a slower downhill left curve smoothly and slowed. Probably no throttle but braking and turning. While I did this maneuver, I lost power. The car coasted about 100 feet and I pulled off the road and parked.
Initially, with the loss of power all of the lower red cluster of warning lights in the dashboard came on and stayed on until I turned the car off. Afterwards I checked the engine and didn’t see anything grossly wrong, and then attempted to start the car again. It slowly cranked and then fired up. There were no residual red lights on the dashboard and I was able to continue on home about 10 miles at 50 mph. No issues at all during the remaining drive. Any clues as to what might be? I plan to check the battery cables, ground cables, and see if there’s any obvious loose wires. Any other thoughts would greatly be appreciated.
car is 2003 cab, 110k miles. Spark plugs and coilplug about 30k on them. Alternator replaced about 40k ago battery about 2 years ago 15k on it.
the car had on a few occasions over a couple years had a pause when starting before it fires up. Other times it fires up fast.

My feeble guess is loose wire
De Jeepers thoughts are much appreciated. I do not seen any loose connections. Will check tomorrow for codes. If none found I was thinking of replacing the crankshaft sensor first as it seems it could do the most harm if not corrected, and its cheaper than a fuel pump.
Any opinions as to getting the $50 Pelican Parts Boesch sensor vs Porsche OEM for $200+?
$30-100 gets u a fi tester so u r not guessing and just wastng money. U can also rent them for free from most autoparts stores. Some simple diagnistics will save u a ton of money.

How old is the battery? Just curious. And is the battery secured tightly to the vehicle?
Old batteries can cause all sort of strange issues with these cars. If the battery is 5 years old, and/or it has been dead a few times, Id replace it anyway at this point.
The slow start is curious. Makes me think of the starter, or, the ignition switch or battery. But the starter should not have anything to do with the loss of power while you were already driving.
When you say a pause before starting, do you mean a pause before the engine turns over? Or do you mean the engine turns over but doesnt light up and run - just cranks for longer?
The rough idle is also curious. If the coils or fuel injectors arent getting reliable power, they might fail to fire off predictably.
Also check for any loose or wet connections at the DME and Immobilizer. The DME on a cab is at the rear firewall, and the Immobilizer is under the seat. The seat has four large bolts of non-standard head socket type, and a wire connection for the heated or powered seats that need to be removed if you have to check that. The OE seats are heavy, FYI, so check this item last.
The slow start which has been happening infrequently for a couple years, perhaps when I am restarting after a brief time out at the gas pump rather than first thing in the morning. When I turn the key, it will slow crank may once or twice, then with a bit of a pause, then crank again and fire up.
I usually drive once a week 60 miles round trip to work. Battery is 3 years old I believe.
I replaced ignition switch at about 95k or 3 years
Im leaning on swapping out the alt-starter cable as it is original as well as crankshaft sensor as they are old and cheap.
Your slow start issue is a classic bad starter issue with these cars. It takes a lot if torque to turn the motors and when they start to fail they slow down when the engine bay is hot.
I think your stalling issue is completely seperate unless u have a ground issue between the motor and chassis. Check the heavy wire from the motor to chassis in the passesenger side rear wheel well.
Some numbers
battery rest 12.36v
battery at crank drops to 9.3v then when running 1500 rpm 14.04v
battery running 1500rpm with headlight on 13.96v (one headlight blown)
started up cleanly when cold just now
Can load test the battery. Most parts stores can do this if u dont have a tester. If it checks out chances r the starter is bad and its draging it way down.
Took it into the Independent repair and got it sorted out. There were two problems. First problem was indeed the alternator starter cable was corroded. Went ahead and got that replaced as well as a new starter. However, that didnt seem to be the explanation for the car stalling. That was the crankshaft sensor.
Thanks all for your help, again. Looking forward to continuing the enjoyment of my 996. This forums members have been truly good to me.
