Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm wondering how much could cylinder bore surface finish contribute to the bore scoring? The reason why I'm asking is that in my case on bank 2 all surfaces are almost like "glass" when touched - well, not really but it's really smooth under finger. Should there be visible some surface roughness and/or crosshatching - after about 20 year of use or 75k miles? From enginebuilder: " To the naked eye, a freshly honed cylinder bore looks pretty rough in comparison to a used cylinder bore. Honing leaves a scratched surface that should show a strong crosshatch pattern. A used cylinder, on the other hand, will have a smooth polished appearance with much less crosshatch visible depending on how much the cylinder is worn." I can take more/better images but typically they look like this:

POST 2Original post

Ignore what that engine builder said, he was referring to "iron cylinders"... Yours look just as expected ( good ) for a Lokasil 75k cylinder........

POST 3Original post

On the other hand, that carbon build up! Yikes! I talked with Lake Speed about this stuff recently after my last UOA and he recommended a Poly Ether Amine (PEA) based fuel additive for the next couple of tanks of fuel. PEA can clean carbon deposits inside the combustion chamber. No other type of fuel additive can do that. The Red Line Complete Fuel System Cleaner is a PEA based fuel additive he recommended so I'll be getting a few bottles to try out.
