Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I figured that was unlikely, so I checked lots of other stuff, but it was just the bulbs.
Leading evidence: 'Check lots of other stuff' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ignition switch the low beams wouldn't work' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bulbs' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If it was the ignition switch the low beams wouldn't work.

I'm thinking highest probability is the light switch and it seems easy to check without being a contortionist
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently replaced mine because it would not turn on the headlights. It broke inside. Now all is well. 23 years of service did it in...
Wait...I may have misunderstood. Your high beams don't work, right? Does the headlight switch work smoothly and turn on the headlights? If so, then it is more probable that it is the high beam lever and switch on the steering column.
I don't know if there is any way to fix the internals, never heard of someone doing it. The whole assembly is here

Problem is I've done surgery on my stalk to fix the non returning turn signal. Fixed that nicely and I'm pretty sure my high beams worked after that. However I'm thinking maybe I screwed something up on assembly of the stalk.
Might be worth checking the bulbs. I had BOTH my high beams burn out at exactly the same time. I figured that was unlikely, so I checked lots of other stuff, but it was just the bulbs.
The wt/bk wire from the light switch to the stalk is what powers the high beams when the low beams are on. Check that. If it was the ignition switch the low beams wouldn't work. The re/wt wire on the stalk is constant power that the flasher uses.
There's a Mercedes part that's interchangeable with our headlight switches, at a fraction of the price, quick forum search will reveal it. There's also a Chinese (I think} version that might be worth a try.
URO Parts Headlight Switch; Electrical Portion without **** SKU: 1194061-0005456504P/N: 00054565041 x $33.99If it was just a few bucks I would say nope, but 100$ makes it tempting.
Does your car have factory DRL? Do they work? If the DRL module isn't working, you can flash to pass, but won't have high beams for driving.
Ask me how I know...
