Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this. I put some new Fahren Termitor H7 LED lights into my 2000 996. It was quite an ordeal as the insulation on the existing 22 year old wires was so brittle it would fall off leaving copper wire exposed. I solved this by adding new wires to the exposed copper and soldered them on and covered the ends with electrical tape. I put the new LED bulbs in the LOW BEAM housing leaving the existing HI BEAM halogen bulbs in place. All well and good right? I reinserted the headlights into their housing and went to test the lights. I then entered the twilight zone. - The lights came on but the low beams were the old halogens. Yellow, dull but properly aimed. - The hi beams were the new H7 LEDs shining like the spotlight at the Luxor in Vegas I tried swapping the bulbs around but then neither one worked. If the lower light is the LED, it should come on as the low beam right? Any advice appreciated. I dont want to muck around too much due to the issue with the brittle wire insulation. I suppose I could buy another pair of LED H7s. Thank you.

Low beam is the upper light. The hot wire should ye/bk

POST 3Original post

Use shrink tube not electrical tape, the tape WILL loosen/fall off eventually and makes a sticky mess if exposed to heat.. There is also a liquid electrical "tape" thats used for some connectors and such, available from most electrical suppliers. It works for the oddball weak spots. Good Luck!

"leaving copper wire exposed. I solved this by adding new wires to the exposed copper and soldered them on and covered the ends with electrical tape that's quite a smart idea. I used liquid electrical tape pretty much the entire length of every wire. I like your idea much better. Minus the electrical tape on the ends, as the other poster added, and I will second. electrical tape, the black stuff we all grew up with, is a disaster when heated and cooled and does not age well at all, so heat shrink wrap it is. Great project for an evening. I was not aware that led headlights are legal in the USA. I used "Philips Automotive Lighting H7 NightGuide Platinum Upgrade Headlight Bulb, Pack of 2, (H7NGPS2)" and they are amazingly bright, without that annoying white light LEDs are famous for. Well, they are bright when used in tandem with new reflectors. I've never had such great headlights, even better than my 06 Cayenne and 08 335.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If you have litronics lamps the low beam is on top. If you have halogens, its on the bottom. The color of the wires is your key. Thanks for all the good advice. Im gonna get some liquid electrical tape for the connection points which are still exposed copper. Lesson learned is to be gentle when reinserting the light assembly. You can crack and damage the thin plastic mounting bracket where the main wiring connector goes like I did. Low and slow and she will slide right in.
