Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone!
My 2001 C4 996 has the Litronic (Xenon) headlights.
However the left headlight does not "shine bright" when high beam is turned on.
Seems like one or two of the "regular" bulbs are broken.
What bulbs are used in these headlights and is it an easy DIY?
I have done a lot of work on my recent cars but never have had any reason to work with Xenon headlights (hence im a little afraid to do so).
Thank you in advance.
The xenon bulbs only apply to the low beams. Theres a separate high beam bulb below the xenon bulb (or above it if you have the light housing out of the car and turned upside down). Its a regular old H7 bulb, although you can upgrade to an LED.
here's where I started:

There's a wealth of knowledge on the web and recent discussions here, use search. The litronic bulbs required for high and low beam are the same type, so you should be able to troubleshoot easily swapping the bulbs.

do be very careful with the wiring in there. Over time it hardens and cracks, leaving bare copper.
again, do a search for methods and suggestions. Very recent discussions here on the subject.
Oh and it might seem obvious but undo those battery cables! Or the next thing you will need is fuse. Or worse.
Good luck!
The hardest part of this is potentially dealing with the wiring harness in your headlights just falling apart, very common, insulation will flake off if you move the wires. If its bad then liquid electrical tape is going to be your friend.
Dear all,
So greatfull for all the information given. I will try to do the change myself, battery disconnected, gloves, carefully with the wiring etc. H5 lamp with original wattage will be used.
Thanks once again!
You dont need to disconnecte the battery. Just remove the headlight with the tool provided in the toolkit
Take the headlight to a comfortable work bench. There, you will see each bulb has its own access in the back of the headlight.

The low beam in your car is D2S Xenon
The high beam is H7
