I've picked up another 996 with a busted 6th gear synchro. Most of the dismantlers have the whole transmission for anywhere from 3-5K. A reman from porsche costs $6K installed. Unlike the engine, I understand that the transmission can actually be repaired as oppose to replaced. Curious if anyone has any experience with this type of work... Here are a couple of pics! Current ride...

They are at: http://www.phii.net/ You should also give Guard a look: http://www.guardtransmission.com/ Both these guys make gears so should have some clue on the synchros and who can do them.

If you do a search you should be able to find the tread where I gave the name and number of the shop that rebuilt my trans last year. It sounds like there are a few more around now. BTW, I don't think there is any reason you can't rebuild a 996 engine. It's just not economical to do so given that the factory will do it for you for $6700 or so. Jim
