That's happened to me before - when I was doing some shifter work I put the console back in and didnt use all the screws because I may have had to take it back out and until all the screws were in the lid wouldn't close.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been trying to troubleshoot the now near impossible task of getting the console storage cover to latch. It has taken several tries to get it to latch in the past, but when I tried it first time this season, it's just a no go. I've owned my '01 since new and have been historically gentle on cars. I undestand the hinge is a weak point , but I don't believe that's the issue. I've removed the 2 rubber cushions from the cover, and that hasn't helped. I've looked at pictures from various angles of the latch, but still can't figure out how it operates. Is it possible to relube it, so it functions again? Where do you lube it without removal? Is it worn out, and needs replacement? I can't find any info here on Rennlist about this issue

POST 2Original post

I've had mine out in order to paint/recover my console. It's very easy to remove - just a few screws, once the console is out. I would remove it and examine it more closely. Maybe someone had it out before and it's not aligned properly or maybe it's cracked. A lot of it is plastic. If you do remove the console for this you should install the upgraded hinge at the same time.

POST 3Original post

Hard to understand how it could be just the latch, unless it has gotten pushed down out of alignment. A very light shot of white lithium grease in the latch might work. Also, the lid CAN get way out of alignment with a broken hinge. Mine did and wouldn't latch correctly. The upgraded metal hinge did the trick and it is a simple job...maybe about 20 minutes tops.

POST 4Original post

Make sure all the screws of the console are done up and present. Without all the screws in place the entire console can be out of alignment and the latch won't close. That's happened to me before - when I was doing some shifter work I put the console back in and didnt use all the screws because I may have had to take it back out and until all the screws were in the lid wouldn't close.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm the OP. I ended up spraying some lube(aerosol with a straw) on both sides of the latch where I felt the pivot point was. It now latches securely, and is much better than it has been for years. It's now over ayear later and all is well.
