One of my exhaust tips need adjusting anyways, really hope its something simple, will try to get under the later this week.

Good info for sure, I suspect the flywheel as well.

Checked the heat shields and other things that could be loose and everything was solid, so ended up bringing it over to a local shop to look at that and a minor service to prep for a road trip.

Got a second opinion yesterday and the contents in the oil filter are enough to suspect a major issue where a rebuild of recommended, still cant believe it but now just more pondering.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
Im experiencing 100% off this, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/505504-spirited-drive-now-rattle-when-coasting-gear.html
wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this or any suspicion on what it might be?
03 C4S currently 101k
Oil change, differential fluid at 95k
Clutch at 85k
When you did your clutch at 85k miles did you also replace the dm flywheel? Could be your springs are worn and rattling. Porsche had a bulletin for this issue back around 2005. I'd guess there are a few low miles 996's with original flywheels that are wearing out, or about to.
Silly as it sounds, check simple things, like heat shields and such. I had a similar experience with mine shortly after taking ownership. Turned out to be a loose exhaust tip.

Well thats all she wrote, metal and plastic in the filter and the filter canister so suspected IMS issue etc. The car still runs and drives but now need to decide what direction to go because a full rebuild is recommended. Any and all suggestions welcomed
Whoa! So she went from a rattle when coasting to a full engine re-build? Hmmm, there seems to be a disconnect here! What does it sound like when you start it up and let it idle? Originally, you made it sound like the rattle had something to do with the movement of the car (coasting)...

When idling it sounds completely normal. Two weeks ago, Im driving her normally until I started to hear the rattle not only while coasting as described but when in first gear at 3-4K RPM so thats when I stopped driving all together and made an appointment at a local indie Porsche shop. That appointment happened yesterday and what they observed the rattle happens even while idling, they removed the drive belt and the idling persisted. Then they removed the oil filter, thats when they discovered metal and plastics which is indicative of
either a failing bearing (crankshaft main, or IMS), possibly due to oil supply issues
So drove the car back home and trying to process everything. Like I said car still runs and drives and at idle it sounds normal, it might be ticking from sitting for two weeks but before that all was normal.
yeah Ill say, the diagnoses comes from a shop that I trust so my initial reaction was to take their word for it but going to try and get a second opinion on it and go from there.
I would not even start it again let alone drive it until you confirm their findings at the very least. Sorry you have to go through this as they are great cars when dialed in.
Got a second opinion yesterday and the contents in the oil filter are enough to suspect a major issue where a rebuild of recommended, still cant believe it but now just more pondering.
Sorry to hear that. However, its better that the car needs a rebuild than a person needing surgery. Gotta take it in stride and have some perspective.
I would only pursue a rebuild by an engine builder that has done dozens of these engines, and can verify yours is suitable (sometimes the debris warrants the engine non-fixable. Not Porsche air-cooked experts, etc. Specifically an engine builder thats done M9X engines.
You could also separately source a used engine and roll the dice:

amen to that, its a lot of money but at least its not death off a being. The shop(s) mentioned a used engine would be a dice roll as well but it is a substantially more inexpensive option. What are your thoughts on an option like this

rebuilt with core exchange? Would love a pulse from the group about used vs rebuilt (from non reputable).
