Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check level a couple times' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check level a couple times' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
So if I put 5psi on high line, and drain from the low pressure under the car, do you still drain the line from the quick disconnect back to the pump or does it gravity drain at that point?

For filling, the pump will push all the air out after a few start cycles.

Suggestion · Original poster
Oil is original and 18 years so I think it is wise to change oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 996, 3.6l 2003 model. I want to change the power steering oil and need advice on what needs to be done. Oil is original and 18 years so I think it is wise to change oil.
Want to do this yourself, but can not find any advice or tips on how to do this in a simple way.
Do you have any advice or links that show how to do it.
Thanks
Get a turkey baster and suck out all the fluid from the reservoir. Refill and run engine. Cycle the steering wheel left to right full stop. Do this at least three times and you will probably have completely changed out all the oil. I honestly do not know why anyone would want to change out the CHF-11S hydraulic fluid, or even worry about it. Is there some sort of problem?
U can remove the pump, put 5lbs of air on the pressure side and a bottle on the return line. Cycle the steering a few times and u r done.
If u dont want to pull the pump u can drain it with a turkey baster and there is a quick disco under the drivers seat that can be easily seperated. Still pull the pressure side line and put 5lbs of air on it and use that disco point for the bottle.
I also want to do this. I've inquired in other threads and haven't gotten a clear picture yet
Why do it? I had to remove the reservoir for some recent work, and the fluid was very, very dark brown. Versus new CHF11S, which is clear.
As far as I've understood, the low pressure return is behind the PS pulley, and I think the AC compressor needs removed to get to it. And there are alot of posts of these fittings getting stripped or damaged. They seem difficult to remove. Is this true? Also, where is the high pressure line? I can't figure it out from the parts diagrams.
Is the quick disconnect on the bottom of the car? So that's another low pressure line to drain from?
Where is the high pressure line?
So if I put 5psi on high line, and drain from the low pressure under the car, do you still drain the line from the quick disconnect back to the pump or does it gravity drain at that point?
Is there a refill procedure other than filling the reservoir and turning the wheel until the reservoir stays full? Does it need air bled out?
Thanks!!
U can always seperate the ps lines above motor too and flush.
Basically just remove as much fluid as i can. Pull the entire pump if u want to get all of it but i dont think thats nesseccary.
The high pressure line screws into the pump under the pulley.
For filling, the pump will push all the air out after a few start cycles. Just check the level a couple times.
Hello again,
Thanks for all the good answers and sorry for the late reply.
Want to make it easy and think the idea of soaking up old oil, refilling. Driving the engine and turning the steering wheel sounds like a good idea. Expect to have to do 2-3 times until the oil is like new.
Why make it difficult when you can make it easy
Thanks for the good help
