Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I believe I read in another post that there were some changes/improvement to the additive packages so I'd go with the Gen2.
Leading evidence: 'Replace /improvement' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace /improvement' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion · Original poster
I put less than 2000 miles on the car per year, so annual changes are sufficient.

At that price, I'd urge you to change the oil every 6 months, at most.

I change the oil in the fall, right before storage.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Annual oil change time; I've decided to use Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40.
There is also a "Gen 2" version of this oil. Anybody know the difference, or which one should be used? Thanks.

I believe I read in another post that there were some changes/improvement to the additive packages so I'd go with the Gen2. Oils never stay the same with respect to additives and will change over time so it's nice that this actually differentiates. At that price, I'd urge you to change the oil every 6 months, at most.
Really? Read about what happens to the oil in your crankcase (especially when you only drive 2000 mi/yr) and then revisit your statement... I bet youll be willing to do 2 changes per year
I had Gen 1 and then tried to order Gen 1, but Gen 2 showed up, so I just used it. I dont think theres much difference to worry about. I have another 10 Gallons of Gen 2 thats due for an oil change in December.
I also did about 2,000 miles last year. It depends on those miles. Short trips every 3rd day is way worse than moderately long drives every weekend.
Agreed. Mine is taken out for weekly exercise, usually 30-50 miles depending on what we're doing that day. Sometimes might go two weeks if weather is bad. Usually at or under 2,000 per year.
And here I am inching towards 12k miles in my first year of ownership. These things are such a blast to drive I'd struggle to do 2k miles even if I had multiple cars.
I try to understand the 2x a year oil change. I change the oil in the fall, right before storage. I drive the car 20 or 30 miles and it gets parked. I does not get started for 6 months after that. In a typical year, it is less than 2000 miles. With covid and nowhere to travel to (at least in Ontario), I didn't put on 500 miles on the oil.
Can someone explain what can go wrong with a once year oil especially when the car is not started for 6 months?
The 6-month oil change is for people who think they can extend it a year because they dont believe in doing routine maintenance. Take the every 2 year brake fluid change. How many people actually do that? Id say half the population or less on average.
Or for people who take short trips and accumulate water in the engine, even after only 6 months, you could have rust or pitting on some critical components of the engine.
As long as you get the engine up to temp, a yearly change is fine.
Back in 1995, I knew a farmer with 380,000 miles on his 1/2-ton Chevy pickup truck. His secret was 1,500-mile oil changes. I did the math and figured he could have rebuilt his engine twice at that cost.
Jakes point is that an engine rebuild on a 305 cu inch Chevy was maybe 10-20x cheaper than our engines.
