Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If you're already willing to take the cables off, I would suggest it's worth checking the voltage on the battery first.
Leading evidence: 'Check voltage' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check voltage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Do our cars have a reset process where we disconnect the battery cables and touch them together for 30 seconds?

I drive the cars regularly so charge is OK, but what bad could happen if I do the old BMW standby, disconnect battery cables and tough them together?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

At one point the roof wouldn't work properly, but a quick charge of the battery and it worked fine again.
While working on the rear hardtop mounts it was necessary to have the convertible top in different positions between Up and Down. Afterwards, the top won't open all the way, and it's doubtful that I messed something up in there, but the actuations might have confused the brain?
Do our cars have a reset process where we disconnect the battery cables and touch them together for 30 seconds? Thought I'd ask before reducing my car to cinders......
Nope. The top needs to be re-calibrated and only a Porsche dealer with PIWIS can do it. It is rumored (but often found untrue) that Durametric can re-calibrate the top. Sorry for the bad news.
Great for me, then, because the 997 I put the hardware on also needs the top calibrated. Thanks for confirming the Monday Blues news... Anybody have a guess about that that costs?

I've been looking for a leak and had the roof up and down several times - and when it was in the service position I think the interior lights stayed on. At one point the roof wouldn't work properly, but a quick charge of the battery and it worked fine again.
I drive mine too, and the battery was fine before I started. If you're already willing to take the cables off, I would suggest it's worth checking the voltage on the battery first. Mine had only dropped to 12.1, so I didn't expect it to be a problem, but after letting it charge for a spell, the roof worked perfectly.
I'm talking about removing both Pos and Neg cables, touching them together for 30 seconds, and re-installing them on the battery. Does it do anything for a 996 like it did for some BMWs?
All kidding aside, yes! Its called a hard reset and its supposed clear all ECU memory and drain all capacitors that can hold a charge for a long time.
